Topic: 'Run and gun' favorites

As I'm in a masochist-old-school mood for shooters lately, I got curious.

What are your top favorite 'run and gun' games? And why, if you care enough?

Contra, Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug, obscure titles like Rush'n Attack or Sunset Riders... there's a lot to choose from.

I didn't want to include all shooters (space sh'mups and all) because it would end up too big.

- Both Gunstar Heroes games
- Both Gungrave games (if they count as "Run and Gun"). Why? Undead cowboy with a coffin/rocket launcher/chaingun/missile launcher thing chained to his back. That, and you can play as a guy called Rocketbilly Redcadillac in the sequel.

Gunstar Heroes was fun! As was Contra. As for others... hmmm....  Metal Slug for sure.... you can "run and gun" in Rockman DASH, does that count?

If you decide to go for a gun-only playthrough, DMC3 is especially fond of letting you work magic with your guns.

Ouch, Gunslinger run...! I should try that, although I won't be able to resist Rebellion angst...

Anyway, my favorite series is Contra, and Contra III: The Alien Wars is my favorite installment. Love the whole alien-commando setting, feels more cheesy and at the same time very brutal, and the action sequences are overall the most impressive in my book.

They're all great, though. I'm a big fan of Sunset Riders' stylish presentation and I wish I was better at the game. Right now I can barely beat the first stage. ???

I enjoy the Metal Slug games every now and then. I'm not very good at these, admittedly. I don't have to use Double Chaser in GH, but using any other weapon is not fun at all.

Personally, what I think that makes the Contra series so brutal is that in all games (except the EUR port of Hard Corps) you're basically a One Hit Point Wonder -- thus, the game forces you to, for as long as you live, maintain a no-damage run if you want to keep your current weapon. And personally, that's what I like the most about it -- it's almost as if making a bullet-hell shooter into a ground shooter.

Yeah, the level of attention necessary is what still makes them so challenging and fun, even though I know most of 'em by heart.
