So in the latest MoA-MM news post at Protodude's site, there's more than a few people freaking out over the possibility that Megaman 11 would be based on this show.

Even though there's no precedent of Capcom pulling something like that with MM. The rights tangle alone would put them off; besides, they tend to ignore stuff outside the games unless it's good for a laugh (and even then, most of the Bad Box Art stuff was in SPIN-OFFS).

Archie-MM was one of the only ongoing bits of media we had for a while, and we never got an MM11 that integrated some of the comic characters.

Well, at least the animation itself looks okay-ish? Still waiting for a preview focused on the actual setting; I really hope they did something interesting with it and didn't just leave it at 'random future cities infested with Robot Masters'.

I haven't updated this thread in a while. Here's some merfolk from a Marathon AU.

The first pics for said AU that I doodled; at the time, it was meant to be a one-off thing. Durandal on left, Cortana on right.

Vincent Callahan (the human) carrying Durandal (the lionfish). They're both snarky bastards.

(About the sky: this AU takes place on Mars, which was where the player character of the Marathon Trilogy most likely lived prior to the first game)

Merfolk eat a lot of fruit that doesn't look that appetizing to humans. At least it ain't citrus.

Vince sleeps long and often, to Durandal's annoyance.

The baby in his arms is Joyeuse, who's his and Durandal's natural-born kid (it's semi-common for merfolk to be fantasy-intersex, as Durandal is).

Joyeuse with both her parents.

Cortana, Leela, and Tycho (the latter two having different insignias than usual).

Laundry day.

Vince doesn't like citrus.

Other stuff:

Two things relating to characters belonging to some friends of mine.

Some doodles. (Note: Tycho no longer has that insignia, since he's not related to Durandal here)

Leela and Tessa (note: Tessa is not a Marathon character).

Cortana with a spear, and Durandal with Joy's egg.

Grown-up Joyeuse.

The twins' mom, Ogier.

Durandal and Tycho don't get along.

Joyeuse would like to have a sibling.

Two unrelated merfolk, Caliburn and Pridwen.

A page with three rows of merfolk.

Wait, he was only 54? I thought he was older, for some reason...

I was too young to watch Space Ghost Coast to Coast when it was airing (probably saw the CN bumpers he animated without realizing it), but I've been reading posts from folks who are more familiar with that show and Mr. Croker's work, and...man.

Just had this thought that Ultrabeasts might be a canon spin on the old Pokegods fan concept.

Korra's got one faceplate, low accessory count, a high price and she's US exclusive.

RIP

That's a bummer. >.> She still LOOKS nice, at least, and this is the first I've seen of a US-exclusive Nendo.

Telling people to [tornado fang] off will make the situation worse, not better.

Though I imagine that in this case, ANYTHING that isn't "lol comcept" would make things worse...

Halo Mega Bloks UNSC Firebase (for around $21 cheaper than retail), the Cortana minifig that came with the Broadsword set, and an old Computer Games Strategy Plus that we used to own but was likely thrown out.

Gaming / Bungie's Marathon Trilogy
« on: June 02, 2016, 02:48:34 AM »
No one's started a topic on this yet, right?

The Marathon Trilogy, mostly-developed and published by Bungie (Double Aught handled Marathon Infinity, the third game) from late '94 to '96, is the spiritual predecessor to Halo (in fact, the two series were directly connected in an early draft)--story-heavy FPSes with many layers of depth and a great deal of mind-screwy ambiguity in the vein of William Gibson, at a time when most FPSes could be summed up as "it moves, it dies". Marathon introduced a number of other innovations to the genre, like mouselook (and the ability to aim vertically) and grenade-hopping.

A very, very short summary: you're a Security Officer on the UESC Marathon who is at first impeded by, then ends up working for a Rampant AI, Durandal. Neither of you are as you seem, whether in terms of motivations or nature. You're also not the dude(s) in the second link.

All three games, along with some notable fan scenarios, can be played on modern OSes via Aleph One. If you've got a Mac capable of handling Classic software and wanna go old-school, you can grab the .SITs here (the Trilogy was largely Mac-exclusive). If you just want to read the terminals (which are the primary method of story conveyance), the Story Page has them all, along with two decades' worth of analysis and speculation (protip: write your own notes first).

You mean the game disc you can easily pop into your PS3?

Assuming you HAVE a physical disc. Prices for the Legends games (MoTB especially) regularly reached into the hundreds, didn't they?

Which is not to say that Capcom ain't banking on nostalgia or anything.

It could also indicate that they need to stop being lazy (or appearing lazy). Seriously, that's the most common complaint I see wrt: all these re-releases.

At the VERY LEAST, if Capcom's going to keep doing this, they ought to take care of some games that haven't been re-released as of this post. A physical release of Megamans 9 and 10 (with all the DLC) would be appreciated--if the 3DS could handle it, then that's where I'd like it to go.

I've kept away from MN9 in general because Inafune's company has made so many missteps that I lost interest in general.

I get the feeling that a lot of new game companies are at risk of floundering for a bit before they hit their stride, especially if the people in charge were more used to a different role. Comcept has the misfortune of being really visible, I think.

Quote
However, when Capcom releases a collection that nobody really needs or wants, people are gonna be upset. Fact of the matter is that nobody was gonna thank MMLC when the Classic series has already had endless re-releases and virtual console releases, etc.

And didn't that proprietary engine that one of the devs went on at length about turn out to just be a normal emulator? That didn't endear MMLC to most folks, either.

I can only hope that Capcom actually listened to all the constructive criticism of their constant half-assing and that their apparent efforts to turn things around are sincere.

But when a series is dormant for so long and the company tries to release something in that franchise, even if it is just a collection of past games, they usually do so to test the waters to see if the series is worth supporting financially to release actual new games.

After an interminable string of re-releases (and at least one shoddy iOS port) broken up only by the comically dull grindfest that was Xover, I'm not sure if it counts as "testing the waters" anymore.

...guys, you do realize that Capcom not only wasted everyone's physical and emotional investment in MML3, but made no meaningful effort to make up for that for YEARS. It's not fair to expect people to just passively roll with that.

And by now I think most of the vitriol has died down anyway?

Gaming / Re: Mighty No. 9

And I just roll my eyes. The hate and vitriol just isn't worth it. Cooler heads prevail, as they say.

Just sayin', but I remember "cooler heads" still being called all sorts of nasty things because they dared to be human and have feelings, however restrained they were.

I expected Protodude's readership to [parasitic bomb] themselves and screech about franchise death, and received it in abundance.

As for my reaction: I'm intrigued; the fact that this Megaman is named Aki suggests to me that this may not be purely Classic-based.

Deep Silver also thought that misogynistic gore would be a great way to promote Dead Island(?), so...maybe we're lucky that this trailer is ONLY really corny?

Maybe Comcept or Inti will put together a better trailer to make up for this one.

Other M deserves far more credit than it gets, most people only hate it because it destroyed the player-projected images of Samus ranging from female Batman to bloodlusty psychopath who just happened to fall on the Pirates' bad side.

I thought one of the main problems is that there are few/no charitable interpretations of most of Adam's actions towards Samus. Like, does the game even try to explain why he waited until Samus was on the verge of death-by-heatstroke to authorize use of her Varia suit? It makes him come across as callous, or that he foolishly overestimated Samus's endurance, at best.

That, and from what I understand, the presentation of Samus's vulnerable side didn't feel natural/wasn't handled well, what have you. I would have at least made it a bit more subtle.

As for Federation Force--I'm fine with it; looks like it could be a decent diversion.

I hope they can make the release date this time, because I'm legit really worried about the dev team's emotional well-being at this point--life keeps dumping on them and everyone's calling Inafune nasty things, even though I sincerely doubt that all of the blame can be laid on him.
