Rockman Series / Re: Games Similar to Megaman
« on: September 03, 2011, 06:33:28 AM »
I'll recommend these.

Cave Story.  What are the chances you haven't heard of Cave Story?  Developed by just one guy over a period of 5 years.  It's a testament to the creator's love of oldschool 2D platforming and shooting.  It's got robots, a mad scientist, magic, and bunnies.  It somehow makes all of this work together in a story that turns surprisingly dark.

It's available for free on PC, though you can also buy it as DSiware if you want it portable, or Wiiware for updated graphics and music.  I think it may also be on Steam.  Additionally there's a 3D remake coming out for 3DS (as a retail release), that I'm looking forward to.

Next for those who want to dust off the old N64, I recommend looking up a little gem from Treasure called Mischief Makers.  Again it's a testament to oldschool 3D gaming, with a few twists.  Your character is totally unarmed, and your only attack is to grab things.  It's a bit like the Z-knuckle if you built a whole game around it.  Tear a weapon out of an enemy's hands, and use it, rip a rocket launcher off a mech and shoot back. Grab missiles out of thin air and hurl them back at the shooter.  It's entirely awesome, and lends its self to adaptive gameplay on a much faster paced level than Megaman.  I highly recommend this oft overlooked title to anyone who loves 2D gaming.

My immediate reaction:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x74TkNlP6tc

Really Capcom.  If it's not Street Fighter or Resident Evil you don't want to support it.  If you don't care about Megaman anymore then sell the blasted trademark to someone who does.

I used to believe that Megaman & Bass was the hardest thing I'd ever play.  And then I played Super Meat Boy.  That is controller embedded in the wall level frustration.

Zero / Re: I had no clue that lot of fans hated MMZ4
« on: November 18, 2010, 12:02:47 AM »
Personally I loved Z4.  The drastic changes in the game systems was a shocker at first but I eventually came to enjoy them.  I personally loved the easier to acquire EX skills.  It made the whole thing feel much more like a Megaman game should to me.

The storyline while omitting factors from the previous games did its own thing.  It's much darker than the rest of the series and that's saying something for a series that's already the darkest Megaman series yet.  It had heavy themes of sin, retribution, penance, forgiveness, and salvation running through the various characters.

You can see the parallel drawn between Zero and Craft, who while taking different paths both in a way are trying to do the right thing but have caused tremendous suffering through their actions, and both end up paying the ultimate price in their final act to make a better world.

Meanwhile Weil's arc comes to a close as he reveals his true intentions never being driven by greed but only an overwhelming desire for revenge, making him the total antithesis of Zero's arc.  Both are responsible for a tragic and destructive history, but while Zero is trying to make things right, Weil is only striking out at the world as a whole.

Then you have Neige and Ciel.  Each of them being strong support characters who drive the story.  Without them it wouldn't come to this point.  Both of them ultimately having to find the courage to rebel against an oppressive authority and break away from society in order to achieve their own goals.  The only difference is Neige only wanted to escape, and Ciel actively fought back, though Ciel's actions clearly influenced Neige by the end who supports Zero when everything comes to its climax.  You usually don't see supporting characters who are so strong as both characters and as influences on the main character in a Megaman game.

Really I'm glad for Z4.  yes I'd like to have seen the mother elf and the guardians one more time but Z4 had its own narrative about redemption and death that they didn't exactly fit into.  So personally I'd say Z4 is by no means a bad game.  It's a vastly different game, and a brave direction in storytelling.  While I can see how it can throw some people off, I love it for the strong sense of finality it carries.

Rockman Series / Re: Megaman Megamix 2...
« on: September 23, 2010, 11:21:12 AM »
Got my copy of Megamix 2 yesterday.  Protoman, Bass, and Skull Man.  There is so much awesome packed into this thing.  The Skull Man story is pretty moving and I love how the whole thing is set against this harsh snowy background that really seems to emphasize the contrast between the characters.

I love the portrayal of Wily in Megamix as well.  He's not just a typical mad scientist who wants to rule the world.  He's a full on misanthrope who prefers the company of robots over other humans.  He's actually pretty persuasive in his arguments and manages
talk Dr. Cossack into admitting he's a hypocrite for treating Skull Man differently.
Bass meanwhile...is just plain psycho in this thing.

Duo's doesn't really look like he's even wearing a helmet.  It kind of looks like that's just the shape of his head.  Considering he's distinctly more robotic looking than other characters, he might not have anything under that helmet but robobrain (or glowy energy stuff).

Pretty sure none of the official artwork ever depicted classic Megaman with brown hair.  It's always black or blue.  Later Megamen such as Trigger, EXE, Geo, Vent, and Aile all had brown hair (and green eyes as I recall) but the original had black hair (and blue eyes).  The decision was probably a technical limitation at the time, but non 8-bit games also gave him black hair, so it seems they stuck with it.

Though given the fact that most of the later Megaman had brown hair and green eyes, it's easy to see how people can make the mistake.  I see a lot fanartists drawing classic rock with green eyes for example.

It's questionable if he even HAS hair.  That helmet might be built right into his head.  Megaman and Protoman weren't originally built for combat, so having hair would be sort of a vestige of their pre-combat forms.

Most of the fanartists seem to draw his hair as silver though.

ZX / Re: The Official English Mega Man ZX manga
« on: August 12, 2010, 01:19:51 AM »
You know, while I like the art in the ZX manga, and I can understand that they're respecting the source material, I think maybe they should take at least some liberty with the story.  So far it's almost been like I'm just reading the game.  It wouldn't hurt to throw in some original material.  What I like about Megamix is how different it is from the games while still being very loyal to the core concept.

ZX / Re: Is Ciel the first commander? And other related questions.
« on: August 12, 2010, 01:15:54 AM »
I'd also like to add, that because Copy X and X do not share souls, the only thing that makes Copy X, "X" is his being addressed as so.  He's not really X, but it's the identity he was given.  Girouette was never addressed as Zero.

Now, Girouette DOES bear a striking resemblance to Zero, and there's a pretty heavy implication that Prairie has taken notice of it:

"Hahaha! Maybe Giro resembles someone you cared about. Everytime you talk about him, you look so happy. Don't worry, I won't hold it against you if you did like him. It's thanks to all of you that I'm finally able to fight for what's important."

So, if you want to theorize that he was built in memory of Zero, that's fine and dandy.  I wouldn't say that makes him "Copy Zero", though, since he first of all does not have any combat abilities of his own and secondly does have an identity of his own.

A good point.  Actually I'd forgotten about that particular conversation.

I guess the only difference there is where you draw the line between resemblance and an outright copy.  I'd like to think it's possible that Ciel built Giro, at least party based on her memory of Zero, but at the same time allowed him to be his own being.  Where you draw the line between homage and copy is really a matter of semantics.

The Cyphers mentioning Giro, I'll have to check again.  After I blow through one more round of the Zero collection and finish the unlockables I'm moving on to replaying the ZX series.  If anything I need a dose of positive future after the end of Z4.

ZX / Re: Is Ciel the first commander? And other related questions.
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:19:28 AM »
Learning from one's mistakes can mean never trying again, or trying again and getting it right.  She didn't set him up the rule the world, implant him with false memories, or do anything that would have resulted in what made Copy X a megalomaniacal man-child with a messiah complex.  Or maybe it's all the coffee that keeps Giro stable.

Though I don't think Inafune was thinking that far ahead when he created Giro, and likely Giro's origins if revealed will be something made up on the spot.  Thus the wild theory that he's Copy Zero.

ZX / Re: Is Ciel the first commander? And other related questions.
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:58:59 AM »
Why so contrarian?  In either case Copy X's origin is very tightly under wraps.  It's clearly not public knowledge and it could just as well be the case for Giro.  I don't argue that it IS the case, just that the possibility exists, and there really isn't evidence to the contrary.  That's how pet theories work.  It's certainly less ridiculous than the cataclysm theory, or as far fetched as the Dr. Cossack built Axl Theory.

What we do know is:
Giro is a Reploid
He is stated to be older than he looks
He knew Ciel
He's the chosen one for Model Z

None of those are less than facts provided in the game its self.

My theory is just one possibility that fits with the known facts.  Unless we get ZX3 with more background on Giro, or some official word from Inafune, all we really can do is theorize.  Yes we could just all say "he's a random dude with no significant past who happened to pick up Model Z one day and met Ciel."  But really this board is here for discussion and if we all agreed on one thing, there wouldn't very well be a discussion to go on here.  Personally I'm just glad that the Zero collection seems to have also rekindled a little interest in the ZX series.

ZX / Re: Is Ciel the first commander? And other related questions.

She told Zero, once near the end of the game.  She told him at no point any earlier, nor did she bring it up again.  No one in the base said "By the way X is a copy and Ciel built him."  Indeed would ANYONE trust the creator of their oppressor as the leader of their resistance?

Furthermore it seems most everyone under Copy X treats him as if he were the real X, and the neo-arcadian humans in Z4 just call him X or Master X, never Copy X.  I'd say Copy X kept his being a copy well under wraps.  If Copy X being her creation was ever revealed it wasn't until after the Zero series.

ZX / Re: Is Ciel the first commander? And other related questions.

It's a crazy theory but I still wouldn't rule out Ciel building Zero.  Possibly in secret, keeping him under wraps for a while.  She didn't tell anyone she built Copy X after all.

My theory is Giro is Copy Zero.  Mind you, Ciel would have learned her lesson from the first time.  He looks like Zero and has his DNA data, but not his memories, and she didn't intend for him to ever think that he's Zero.

His compatibility with Model Z is an unintended side effect.  Much like Ashe who can use Model A because she's related to Albert, Giro can use Model Z because he shares its DNA data.

If Giro were a copy of Zero, though Ciel would probably not tell him or anyone this.  He's just her attempt at getting Zero back, but isn't going to repeat her mistakes with Copy X.

Anyone that's my crazy pet theory.

ZX / Re: Is Ciel the first commander? And other related questions.

Well Giro's bio does say he's older than he looks.  It's possible that he indeed has been around long enough to have known Ciel.  It's also possible that Ciel really did live for quite a long time.  True she lived during a harsh time after the fall of Neo-Arcadia but she might have extended her life the way most humans do by ZX time with cyborg implants and full reploid bodies.

So it's possible that they knew each other by Ciel, Giro, or both being quite long lived.  Come to think of it Giro has a forehead marking and turned into a cyber elf when he died, so he's probably a reploid to begin with, and thus wouldn't show his age anyway.  Who knows, it's possible that Ciel BUILT Giro.  It would explain his resemblance to Zero and why he's compatible with Model Z.

Original / Re: Megaman 9 vs Megaman 10's music
« on: July 16, 2010, 07:28:55 AM »
Both have good soundtracks.  MM9 seems to have played it safer and resulted in a more consistent soundtrack.  All of the themes are memorable and evoke the imagery of what they're going for, and I especially loved the Wily Machine theme with the sirens going off.  It gave a serious big boss feel.

Megaman 10 had a riskier soundtrack with more variety.  In some places it paid off, in others not so much.  Strike man's theme tried to sound sporty but it just fell flat (as did most of his stage, and overall design, but every game seems to have its one weak link.  Still it's the same soundtrack that gave us Solar Man's theme.  I don't think either Wily theme measured up to the MM9 Wily machine theme, but they weren't bad either.

Original / Re: Rate and Discuss: Treble Boost
« on: June 29, 2010, 07:43:06 AM »
Personally I love combining robots in all their forms, from Transformers and Voltron, to the few we get to see in Megaman.  Treble boost is no exception.  I especially loved the first appearance of it in Megaman 7 since I could have Rush combine with Megaman and have a combining robot showdown with Bass.  Probably one of the most fun battles in the game if not the entire series.

That said I hope combining rush comes back some day.

Zero / Re: Most Useful Gimmick Weapon?

The chain rod was very long, but not very sturdy.

The Recoil rod is firm and solid, but not very long.

The triple rod could get up to three times its size if Zero was in the mood.

Of course by the fourth game, Zero wore out his rod and had to use his hand.

Rockman Series / Re: Your easiest and hardest Megaman Game
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:00:19 AM »
Of the traditional style games Megaman 6 is probably the easiest.  Those armors really just break the game.  Though controlling such a powerful Megaman is also kind of fun.  Command Mission is also pretty easy be the easiest just because it's an RPG where there is no problem you can't power level around.  Legends 2 is also a bit of a cake walk, if you upgrade your weapons.

Hardest, without a doubt, Megaman and Bass.  This game is made of hate.

21
I agree, this post 8-bit game bashing is just another fan fad.  Megaman 7 and 8 were every bit the products of game designers who respected the material they were working with and wanted to give the fans everything they could by taking advantage of new technology.

Before that, Megaman 5 and 6 were being bashed, even though Megaman 5 had some new and innovative level design, and opened up robot master designs to the west for the first time, while Megaman 6 gave us the new combining mechanic that we're still seeing Bass use even today.

The fact is, Inafune has kept tight control over the classic series and won't let something slip by that isn't worthy of the series.  They may try new things, some things stay, others go, but none of the games in the series deserve the unfair bashing that some of the fans are giving to 7 and 8 right now.

22
As with Astro Boy, Hollywood has shown time and again, that when it comes to things from japan, be it anime, or video games, they are entirely incapable of grasping the very basic concept of "respect the source material."  It is like an toddler trying to understand the distance between Earth and Pluto.  You can tell, them but such an idea is not within their current capacity to grasp.  Such is the case with Hollywood and source material.

Seems to me Bass was probably sent by Wily to look for the components of the Roboenza cure, and saw Wily's big announcement and got pissed off that he was sent on a fool's errand.

Original / Re: Mega Man 10 stage route.
« on: April 12, 2010, 11:51:05 AM »
If it's Megaman or Protoman I start with Pumpman.  Megaman can break down Pump's shield and Proto can gather up a charge shot until Pump is vulnerable.  The water shield is a must have in the early game.  After that I break order and go after Blade Man, since the water shield makes his stage much easier.  Blade himself is easy to buster.

If I'm using Bass I go straight for Blade, then Pump.  The Triple Blade is fairly effective against Pumpman, and easier to hit him with than Thunder Wool.

X / Re: X7-X8 never happend?
« on: April 11, 2010, 08:33:13 AM »
If you read the article, it doesn't say anything about retconning X7-8 and Command Mission, it just doesn't talk about them.  They weren't critical moments for Zero, so they weren't significant to the Zero series, they were just another chapter in the X series.

It took long enough to bash this rumor down the first time (back when that supposed retcon included X6 as well) and it doesn't need to be started again.  Considering that Capcom goes out of their way to reference as much of Megaman as possible including even Battle & Chase, I don't think they're going to go around removing things from the timeline.  Especially if they want any of the same talent working for them again.  It's a bad business move to attempt to undo someone's work.
