Gaming / SNK President aims to shut down video games section
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:19:22 AM »
This is all a massive infodump coming in. The validity is still shakey, but it gives an insight as to how close to death SNK Playmore is yet again.

You probably heard of the departure of Kukino, the game director of kof XIII from snkp. SpekSNK supposed it was a rumor but I can confirm it to you.

One of my contacts in Japan did the interview of Kukino for french website Neo Arcadia and contacted him when the tweets of the ancient programmer came out on the web. Kukino confirmed he left SNKP in November so it's not a rumor anymore.

Besides, two contacts confirmed to me that the new president of SNKP, Ryo Mizufune, wants the video games section to be shut down. He wants to live from license exploitation (queen's blade, kof sky stage) and his influence is one of the things that made Kukino leave the company. It could be possible that many people from the dev team quit too.

The port of KoF XIII is compromised but more than that, it's KoF that is compromised. It's possible that Kof XIII could be the last one of the saga.

We already see signs of this with the release of two cash-ins of King of Fighters in KOF Pachislot and KOF Skystage.

Now, while we'd have heard something from November, which is what makes this shaky, assuming this is true, it's a pretty sad state of affairs for fans of SNK's various fighting games and those looking forward to KoF13's home console release. We may as well just try and get someone to find a dump of the game and hack a Dirty PC version akin to BlazBlue Continuum Shift.

EXE / Star Force Operation? Not likely.

From MMN:

Those of you in North America and Europe waiting for Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star to be localized may have to throw in the towel and just import. It doesn’t sound like Capcom thinks the game will be viable in the market, or perhaps there are other reasons. Needless to to say, Christian Svensson of Capcom of America has this to say over at Capcom*Unity: “For the moment, no plans for a Western release.”

As you know, the game pretty much amounts to a modified port of Battle Network 1 with two new bosses and a multiplayer arena. The game sold pretty badly in Japan, where Battle Network and Star Force usually fair better in sales. At this point, you can kiss a localization good bye unless you all stir up enough noise. In all honesty? This isn't Tatsu vs. Capcom and chances are slim to nil at best. There's still always importing...

Gaming / Plants vs Zombies... in New York
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:00:37 PM »
Honestly, if none of you New Yorkers (New Englanders get a little break... just a little) go to this, you forfeit your geekdom immediately.

Downloadable defense game sensation Plants vs. Zombies invades the nation's largest Halloween celebration, as hordes of zombies and their leafy foes take to the streets in New York City's 36th Annual Village Halloween Parade.

Popcap Games is an official sponsor of this year's Village Halloween Parade, and they're not content to be represented by a lousy street sign. No, they're forming a Plants vs. Zombies troupe to march in the parade, inviting fans of the game, zombie groupies, and "macabre gardening types" to come celebrate with them on October 31st. The company is attempting to make this year's event the largest zombie gathering in parade history, going as far as to extending special invitations to zombie enthusiast organizations such as NYC Zombie Crawl and ZombieCon.

...

The parade kicks off at 7PM on Halloween night. If you're in the area, you probably won't want to miss it. And hey, bring the kids! It's an excellent alternative to keeping them locked in the closet all night for their own safety.

I expect RPMs presence to be felt there in some form... and videos, of course.

Off The Wall / Microsoft Banned from Selling MS Word in the U.S.
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:05:01 AM »
This includes 2003, 2007 and the upcoming 2010 releases.

Quote
On Tuesday, a judge ordered Microsoft to stop selling Word, its flagship word processing software and one of the main components of the Microsoft Office System - namely part of Word 2003 and Word 2007. This also now extends to Word 2010 which contains the same feature set.

Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued a permanent injunction that "prohibits Microsoft from selling or importing to the United States any Microsoft Word products that have the capability of opening .XML, .DOCX or DOCM files (XML files) containing custom XML," according to a statement released by attorneys for the plantiff, i4i, CNET reports. Microsoft stated that it planned to appeal the verdict. i4i sued Microsoft in March 2007 that Microsoft violated its 1998 patent (No. 5,787,449) for a document system that "eliminated the need for manually embedded formatting codes. "

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is considered a "page description language," with one of its key features being that humans are able to read it legibly, not just PC's and other devices. XML allows developers to create their own tags for data.

In May 2009, a jury in Tyler, Texas, ruled in favor of i4i that the custom XML tagging of Word 2003 and Word 2007 infringed on the patent owned by i4i and ordered Microsoft to pay $200 million in compensation.

In Tuesday's ruling, Microsoft was also ordered to pay an additional $40 million for willful infringement, as well as $37 million in prejudgment interest. Microsoft must comply with the injunction within 60 days and the injunction specifically states that Microsoft way not test, demonstrate or market Word products that contain the XML feature in question.

The Microsoft Office system overall generated a 9.3 billion dollar profit in 2008 alone, and this move would hurt that business immensely.

Do note, stuff like OpenOffice from Sun Microsystems and Google Docs may be affected too if they can handle reading XML code.

Entertainment / Hi, Billy Mays here to tell you that....
« on: June 28, 2009, 06:30:31 PM »
I'm dead.

http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-billy-mays29-2009jun29,0,6116879.story

He was found unresponsive in his home by his wife and he couldn't be revived. America has now lost a valuable infomercial salesman. Who will yell at us to buy products on TV now? Vince Shlomi the Scout?

...[tornado fang].

Image aside, RIP Billy. God damn, this has been a bad week for anyone considered famous in the public light. What's worse is Mays was also 50 and died in the same vague manner as Michael Jackson. No cause of death confirmed yet.

Anime & Manga / Tales of the Abyss
« on: April 05, 2009, 09:12:47 PM »
Well, this topic didn't survive the relaunch, so may as well re-open it, more so now that the anime has finished airing.

Thoughts? I liked the last two episodes. It cleared up a few holes in the plot for me, namely some dealings with Luke and Asch. It's a shame we didn't see more mystic artes outside of Jade's two, but they kept battles nice and quick as to not hog too much time. The ending was also very well done.

Gaming / Gaming Fools from The Web
« on: April 01, 2009, 09:59:10 AM »
We get one every year, so let's get the usual collective of April Fools you've spotted around the internets. I'll only throw in one, but damn it's worth it. Some MGS4 spoilers, if you're really anal about being unspoiled even almost a year later, so view at your caution.

Damn it, why don't we have Casting Theater in MGS4?!

Emulation / R4 Banned By Courts in Japan
« on: February 27, 2009, 02:41:28 PM »
Pretty much, you can no longer legally sell an R4 in Japan. It's still legal in Chinese and Taiwanese markets, but good luck finding one in Japan that's not on the black market.
