Title: Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of sinners

Episodes: 7

Quote
When an odd string of suicides begins to occur at a local high rise building, most of the townsfolk treat it as an unfortunate series of events. One girl, however, senses something more sinister at work - especially when a close friend of hers falls mysteriously ill. After witnessing one of the deaths for herself, Shiki begins to realize that a strange connection exists between each of the girls, and predicts a total of eight will die. With seven dead and the accuracy of her prediction unclear, she sets out to put an end to the killings. Yet, as she nears the truth, she finds herself closer and closer to the brink of death; will Shiki become the town's savior, or the next victim?

Probably should have made a thread about this on the old board, but whatever.

Since last year, the earlierst work of TYPE-MOON head author Nasu Kinoko is being turned into a seven part anime movie series. And it's one hell of a series. Having not read the two volumes of the original work, I can't really comment on how faithful the adaption is like with Tsukihime and Fate/stay night, but to me, KnK pretty much is the production of the year so far. These three movies that have been released on DVD so far and have been fansubbed (part four is scheduled for DVD release in December, part five in January) have been quite mindblowing for me. The animation is the best I have ever seen, the atmosphere is quite tense and the music is nothing short but awesome.

Freshmen to TYPE-MOON works probably may have some problems with Kara no Kyoukai, not only because they might not get the references or connections to the other works of Nasu but also because the movies, like the books, are not in chronological order, kinda like the TV broadcast of Suzumiya Haruhi. The actual chronological order is 2-4-3-1-5-6-7.

So, who's also watching this? What are your thoughts and impressions?

The third movie is my personal favorite Kara no Kyoukai movie so far. Some parts of the movie may not be understandable if you haven't seen the first two. If you've seen the first two movies, you'll probably be blown away with this one. This movie introduces a character named, Fujino Asagami and her mysterious abilities.

The visuals in this is incredible, there's plenty of twists and turns that keep you at the edge of your seat. And the murder scenes are gruesome and explicit as ever. The background and shading are done really well and are absolutely beautiful. The music has a nice suspense and supernatural feel that really blends in well with the movie. There is a lot more action in this one than the previous movies and the story unfolds 'til the end, that will leave you speechless at parts. It also explains further about Shiki's "Mystic eyes of Death" ability.

Overall, this movie is an excellent addition and I recommend it for any TYPE-MOON fan to watch. There are some flaws here and there, but definitely a promising Kara no Kyoukai movie. To be safe, I suggest you watch Fukan Fuukei first, Satsujin Kousatsu (Part 1) second and this one third to truly enjoy this series.

I say the first one is currently the best. I can't stress enough that you should watch the movies. I loved the art and it went rather smoothly. The movies aslo get more points since the creators are trying to follow the novels. The best example of that is how in the 3rd, there is a sick [twin slasher] scene that allows you to understand the antagonist Fujino Asagami. While other series may have just implied it, this movie went out and had the [twin slasher] scene in as the 1st scene. While its totally wrong, it lets you understand her feelings and needs to kill of those who hurt her.

I love her eyes also...

Honestly, if you're not a Type Moon fan chances are you will find the first two movies boring and/or slow and/or pretending to be DEEP.
If you are, you'll pick up the proto-Tsukihime feeling right away.

I love them regardless of what I said just now.

Visuals and OST are superb.

I suggest you watch Fukan Fuukei first, Satsujin Kousatsu (Part 1) second and this one third to truly enjoy this series.

I'm against making people watch anime in any order that's not the one intended just because it's achronological.

Indeed it will. Still, I really wished they would have given the tracks names so you could better remember which one was which instead of merely numbering them >_>

And [parasitic bomb], Souren is so creepy and awesome. I wanna see a battle royale between Souren, Kotomine and Nero, Nakata Jouji at his most awesome. Oh, and the winners going to get [tornado fang]'d up by Alucard of course >__>

If gg-TakaJun isn't done subbing this before Christmas, or at least before the end of the year, I'm going to kill someone.

EDIT: And damn, now that I watch the trailer again and listen to 1:47, I'm forcefully remembered that Kokuto is voiced by Suzumura Kenichi, and this guy has left me with a bad taste in my mouth/bad sound in my ears ever since he kept screaming like an idiot back in SEED DESTINY.

The bad news is that

Just finished the movie. While albeit it was shorter that the first three, it was still [tornado fang]ing awesome. The animation is top notch as always and it is hard to find flaws, if any. The music went perfectly with the scene and currently downloading the ED, which sends shivers up my spine. The action and explanation of Shiki's eyes makes it easy for anyone to understand. Finally, the trailer for the next movie is leaving me with a need. A need to see more and more...

Final score: a rare 9/10.

My personal impression of Part IV:

This one completes the "prologue" part of the series. With this film, the entire setup of Knk was explained, Shiki's dual personality, her relationship to Mikiya, how she got the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception etc. Now the "real" story will begin and the three remaining movies will all be roughly two hours in length, which is a good thing.

Maybe it comes from by fanboyism towards TYPE-MOON works, but I can't find any other word best fit for describing my personal thoughts about Kara no Kyoukai than "genius". Despite the fact that after four movies the actual story like hasn't even really started yet (since the first four were pretty much meant to build up the stage and setting), the movies have never even be remotely boring or felt too stretched. I really enjoy the way of storytelling as well as the achronological order of the first four movies. The atmosphere and mood of the series is something I haven't experienced so far. This is something entirely different from, let's say, CODE GEASS. Similiarly, you watch the one episode/movie and at the end of it, you want more. Yet, while CG pretty much ends every episode with a dramatic cliffhanger, you don't have such a feeling with KnK. It builds up the atmosphere and experience in a different, deeper, more complex way.

Meh...too lazy to come up with fancy sounding explanations right now.
In short: Best [tornado fang]ing Anime of the entire year, more people should watch it. If people say NGE is a masterpiece, in a serious and honest way, I say Kara no Kyoukai is.

I liked the atmosphere of this movie, but I personally think that this time they made it too short. Several key points in conversations were left out and too often we get flashbacks to Touko's lines that were given only a short minute earlier. I think in general the movies suffered from leaving out important lines, but this is the only time in which they started throwing tedious flashbacks at us quoting things we already knew.

Let me guess: Naruto flashbacks traumatized you? However, I do have to agree I found that odd. Why repeat a quote heard only seconds before.
Title: Re: Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of sinners
Post by: Zan on December 19, 2008, 05:04:23 PM
I've seen it in Naruto, but nothing really traumatizing... It was bad there, but it's just even worse in a theatrical movie such as this. Even more when the actual novel never once required to repeat Touko's quotes and instead had additional conversation to explain the situation better.

On the other hand, I did like how they added a few additional scenes such as the dead guy being brought into the hospital, Mikiya's singing in the rain and the rune being broken by the zombie. Even if the rune was badly explained due to them cutting text from the script.

Oh and Kirie should have had a scene with Mikiya, but that's not something Nasu included in the novel to begin with. At least she got some attention, along with Fujino, in the intermission.

Title: Re: Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of sinners
Post by: Saber on December 19, 2008, 11:30:17 PM
Meh, Touko's a master puppeteer who succeeded in recreating her own body perfectly as a puppet. She doesn't even remember which of the two bodies is the original anymore, so my guess would be she stays a redhead. Takeuchi said he disliked the blue-haired look which is why he redesigned her in the first place, I don't really see them backing out now. Personally, I think the red ponytail looks a hell lot better than the short blue hair, the whole differentiation thing with Aoko having red hair but blue magic color and Touko having blue hair and red magic color be damned.

Well in her first appearance, both chronological and in writing, she did have red hair, but it's now redesigned to be brown instead. Then for the initial release of KnK and then the Tsukihime expansions she had blue hair. Obviously the blue hair design is no longer valid for KnK. The only reason it would revert to blue hair is to keep any sort of continuity with Tsukihime. Except, KnK and Tsukihime aren't even in the same linear timeline. Ryougi's mystic eyes of death perception are the first since the time of the Celtic Gods when Balor had them. All the same Tohno/Nanaya acquired his death perception several years earlier and no two people can have them at the same time. Let alone the issue with Arcueid and Tohko's puppet research. So really, there's no reason for her to suddenly revert to blue hair again, I'd sooner estimate her to appear with red hair in Satsuki's new route in the new Tsukihime, just because Takeuchi likes the design.

I thought something was odd when there was a symbol on the door. My first thought was a barrier similar to that of Tohsaka, except reversed. It kept everything out instead or Rin's keep everything in. It kinda made me feel better realizing with the rune broken in half that I was right. While I did think it was a barrier, I was right in regards to protection.

By the way, did anyone notice the similarities between Shiki's fighting style before she got her blade and Neiji's/Hinata's fighting style? Seems like that fighting still is very popular.

Pretty good movie, a little on the short side though, same fantastic music (etc.) Overall, I was really satisfied with it.

Tsuukaku Zanryuu is still my personal favorite so far. But, It seems that Mujun Rasen will REALLY catch my attention, judging from the preview. We'll see what happens.

I WAS just speculating. I have no idea if she's gonna get killed or not, but given her status as an expert puppeteer Magician that has no memory of her original body, it's easy to be led to think that whenever she dies for any reason, she simply switches to a prepared body and ditches the old one.

Awesome movie was awesome. I had trouble following the plot a bit though, lots of Nasuverse talking about Akasha, the Counter Force and stuff. However given I'm also a geek, that's a good thing because they pretty much kept referencing stuff from Tsukihime and Fate/stay night.

But hell...that scene with Araya and Touko was just...I think I skipped a heartbeat there.

Claymation video uploaded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhh6ZTdQ8yU&fmt=18) and added to the playlist (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=620E22455FA1D28F). The sound is a bit on the low side, so I'll probably remaster it and pump the volume up, then reupload later.

9.04 now 8D
Now 9.05. I guess everyone agrees this is one of the best movies this year. However, if you compare the +27,000 people who have rated Gurren Lagann to the <3,000 who rated the movie, its not really accurate.

3.000 in less than a week is not bad. Give it time.

For whatever reason, ufotable announced today that there will be a compilation movie for the first six Kara no Kyoukai movies coming out March 14th called Kara no Kyoukai Remix - Gate of Seventh Heaven.

http://www.karanokyoukai.com/news/090220.html
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=68891

Is this really necessary? Do they really think that the movies are too complex for people to understand that they have to make this? Or is it just production strategy? Perhaps ufotable has scheduling problems and needs to buy some time for finishing the final movie, which still has no premiere date for Japanese theatres, kinda like Sunrise with their infamous STAGE 8.5 and STAGE 17.5 from CODE GEASS.

I'm a little mixed about this. Either way this really isn't necessary, but it would be interesting to see how they manage to mesh the 6 movies together. More than likely, they created this just to make a quick buck. It is TYPE-MOON after all, so I'll be waiting to see how this turns out.

This. It takes about 4 movies to understand what is going on, but even then, people these days are too dumb to think it through.

Except, the movies don't give all the information to properly think it through.

You ARE aware that more or less, Azaka and Akiha are roughly Expies (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Expy) of each other, down to the tsundere attitude, which only gives me more reason to gloat about my Akiha fanboyness? :P

I am aware of it, but for whatever reason I like Azaka while I can't really stand Akiha =P
At least Azaka doesn't tell her brother all the time what he's supposed to do and all that. I don't really like Akiha's commanding tone.

Gah, interwebs are too slow, torrents are lagging........still though, it's kinda hard to follow up on the epicness that was Paradox Spiral, so I'm expected to be fairly entertained by this.

This movie was full of Azaka moeness...it was wierd but still entertaining. Looking forward to the final movie, with the main badguy being voiced by Hoshi Souichirou. Really a lot of voice actors from Gundam SEED DESTINY in these movies.

What's wrong, Lassie?! Is there some hot lesbian action going on again?

I thought it'd be more boring but it's actually pretty entertaining, and Kurogiri needed more screentime to explain the words and memories thing properly.

LOL, I haven't been able to finish watching the goddamn first ten minutes 'cos I'm laughing so much at Azaka being tsundere-MOEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~!!! <3 Jesus. And I thought Akiha and Taiga were hard to top. XD

EDIT: 18 minutes in, and I think I've already fangasmed like six or seven times watching Azaka in all her tsundere glory and Shiki just being a general kickass [sonic slicer] like she always is. XD

[tornado fang] Ufotable and their gorgeous trailer music

I don't know crap about moonspeak, but is it just me or in the video Touko calls someone "Nee-san"?
If that was the case my inner fanboy would be yelling "[parasitic bomb] JUST GOT REAL!" for the whole remaining month, but I don't want to get spoiled and knowing Nasu I'm probably going to get cockblocked anyways.

I might do that if this doesn't work out... Granted, directly downloading stuff usually doesn't work out too great for large files since my connection likes to cut out for a few seconds every now and then.

I'll finish eventually, anyways.

So when are we getting Mirai Fukuin?

I liked this movie. It's a good closure and Lio was a great antagonist. I liked how messed up Lio's corpse ended, and while he was being dismembered I was mentally yelling "RYOUGI IS TIRED OF YOUR [parasitic bomb] ALREADY!"

Actually I found sadder his 'cameo' in Shiki's coma scene. He literally came out of nowhere, said "lolconflictspiral" and vanished, and I assume he saw her origin or something because I don't see why she would be useful before getting the MEoDP.

No date for Recalled out summer yet. :<

Great fight scenes and this time it sent chills down my spine. First 20 mins in, and I was feeling rather dark. SOmething about it rather made everything seem dim and... disgusting. Its very hard to describe it.

Are you kidding me? I was repulsed by him. If Shiki didn't do it, I would have murdered his ass. Realized after that 'bondage' scene I was grabbing my arms hard, giving myself small bruises.

I think Araya's presence there would have been far more fitting were it detailed back in movie5, or even movie2. The scene was mentioned in movie5, but he's being so delightfully vague that even in retrospect I don't quite get it. Guess you just need to rewatch Movie5's first Shiki - Araya fight in order to comprehend it.

Can't say there's much too look forward to TM-wise these days.

Fate is just everywhere these days and not particularly interesting, Tsukihime has it's remake but the character designs are very off putting.

I am kind of interested in stuff like Girl's Work I suppose, but that isn't Nasuverse.
