Title: The Kirby Thread
Post by: VixyNyan on May 07, 2010, 04:30:44 PM
Anything about Kirby goes here. Updating first post later. >U<

Remember the Kirby adventure game that was gonna come out on Gamecube, and how long we waited for it to come?

Look at this~

Yay! I finally get my own thread...wait a minute.
I prefer the 2D view so please Nintendo, don't make it like Sonic Adventure.
Not that Sonic Adventure was a bad game, i just want the good old 2D view.

You want it like Kirby 64?

The Gamecube game was gonna have the side-scrolling camera view too (or commonly known as 2.5D), so that's what I'm hoping for too.

Or a pixel 2D game. Any of them would be good. ^^

Let me explain it, i want it to be in 2D like the classic game.
HD art graphic is fine, i do not want 3D 2D.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: VixyNyan on May 07, 2010, 05:24:09 PM
Yea, we all want 2D classic style game. Art graphics would be lovely. ^^

You posted a screenshot of a game with old style graphics tho (with forced color limits).
Those kind of games usually becomes WiiWare Rebirths or NES-style games like R9 and R10.

A retail disc game with art graphics is different tho, and that's a yummylicious thing to be excited about. <3

Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: Bueno Excelente on May 07, 2010, 05:39:38 PM
Shake It! had little success. Drawn graphics are hard to do when compared to simplistic 3D backgrounds and graphics. So, don't count on it. We're more than likely to have some kind of completely derivative game. Not to mention Nintendo will take years just announcing it, considering they still haven't shown a single screenshot of the supposed Zelda and Pikmin projects they're "working on".
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: VixyNyan on May 07, 2010, 05:43:35 PM
Flash is right. We do want a Kirby game with drawn graphics similar to Shake It!, but it isn't guaranteed that we might get it. The reason is sales and general interest from the public. The best idea to do this without paying too much publishing costs and developing costs for disc, manual and box, would be to put it on Wii Ware, since it's a download service and developers makes the games without paying too much. Developers and publishers have to pay big sum of money to get the game out too, you know, so the cheapest option for them is download service (Wii Ware).

Nintendo = Company that just announced yet another Mii minigamefest game.

Us = Screwed in terms of fulfilling game franchises with story and long-term gameplay.

Meanwhile, Kirby Wii isn't new although chances are it's coming sooner than folks think.

Oh God, Kirby.
Playing Kirby Superstar Ultra with a friend was fuckwin awesome.

Then beating Nightmare in Dreamland with the same friend, and then trying to beat Amazing Mirror with him(only to fail).

I also enjoyed Kirby 64, tough I never did fight the true final boss. : <
I loved the cutscenes tough. They were so well done and nice looking, and they did not need shitty voice acting like in Sonic Adventure 1/2.
Also, that one moment in that one cutscene where it's revealed that the princess is being controlled... it creeped me the fook out. Seriously.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread

What would actually be nice is if they tried to evolve the Kirby franchise to full 3D platforming, the same way they did with Mario. But Nintendo doesn't have the brass balls to do that, and it would [acid burst] off fans that just want the same thing all over again, so, no.

Wait, did this topic really become list wars?

*insert truth here*

I'd love to continue this train of thought, but I feel that as it stands I'm wildly off topic in a thread devoted to Kirby. XD

Yeah, it was to be expected. A list was necessary to make the point though, if only visually >.>

Anyways, yes, lets go back to discussing our all powerful, adorable, glutton, missile launching animal hater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9ViwgLYTCA) pink ball.

Soooo, this is a Kirby thread now. Discuss Kirby. XD

I still have to play Super Star Ultra, Canvas Curse is still god tier, and Kirby 64's mixture powers so need to come back. Gunpower star chucking Kirby was awesome.

Post by: Solar on May 07, 2010, 08:18:53 PM
I still need to play Canvas Curse some day, hopefully I'll find it for a good price somewhere. Also, yes, the double powers need to come back, I want my refrigerator Kirby, lightbulb Kirby, Darth Maul's lightsaber wielding Kirby, etc. back =(

Hey, the music is in my INFINITE LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP playlist. Along with Pokémon Stadium's Rival Battle theme. Which I would've forgotten to get if Akira hadn't posted that music in another thread... lol

Anywho, I hope a new Kirby game comes out. And it better have some challenge. Squeak Squad was ridiculously easy. At least Superstar Ultra had challenge in the form of the True Arena. And beating with all helpers? Now that was difficult. But I did it!

Also, I've beaten every Kirby platformer 100%. ^_^

Question: Would a Tilt' n Tumble game work well on a Wii? I think it could work pretty well, at least for a bonus stage or something.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: VixyNyan on May 08, 2010, 03:15:27 PM
The Gamecube-GBA connectivity tech demo that Miyamoto showed at one game event a long time ago played very well. The cartridge in the GBA had this rotating sensor similar to the old Tilt n Tumble and Wario Ware Twisted. When Kirby falls in a hole on the Gamecube screen, the game turns to the GBA screen where you move Kirby on a lower floor or underground, similar to 4 Swords Adventures. ^^

It could work with the Wii Remote, Wii Motion Plus, or a DS with the sensor inside. </wii>

All games are upgrades of one another. Put this on the Wii, give it more panache, and you'll have a good, innovative game.

There's a big line between innovating a game and making the same crap. This here would introduce 3D into the game and GBA interactivity. Not just that, if the gameplay worked well, they'd inevitable introduce alot more stuff into the game. More abilities based on tilt. More different kinds of level designs. This kind of thing escalates. Mario 64 is an upgrade of Super Mario World. And yet, it innovated.

I think that we should have a Kirby game that lets you combine any two powers, with more than just the 8 or so in Kirby 64. Plasma Arrows (Plasma x Cupid), Fire Boomerang (Fire x Cutter), Time Stop (Ice x Crash), the possibilities are endless!

It should be the opposite of Kirby 64: 3D platforming, but with 2D graphics!  Everyone would be like WHOAA!

Get it? Got it? Good.
No you are not doing the comedy routine thing right, you are supposed to wait after you say "Get it?" for the other guy to say "Got it," and then you say "Good."  See? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM1VXhZT37E)

Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: Mirby on May 10, 2010, 02:30:29 AM
Well FF3DS had 279,841 combinations... all I'm asking for is the now-standard 25 powers to be combined in any way, giving a grand total of... 650 combinations. That's 25 for individual, and 625 for combined (yes, Fire x Fire and stuff again). Mainly, I want Crash to be used more.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: Bag of Magic Food on May 10, 2010, 02:43:30 AM
Eh?  What did Final Fantasy 3 DS combine?  I'm only familiar with the FamiCom version.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: Mirby on May 10, 2010, 02:59:20 AM
That's how many possible party combinations you could have. 23 jobs, thus 23 x 23 x 23 x 23. I'm not sure how many were in the Famicom version, but it would still be a lot more than all I'm asking for.

Keep in mind that where the FC version only had 1 sprite for each class (with the exception of Onion Kid), the DS version had individual polygonal models for each character in each class. So that's 279,841 different sets of models on that one DS game card, just for the characters. Imagine how many there are for enemies, NPCs, and such.

Maybe it's just clothing swaps, but still. A good amount.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: Bag of Magic Food on May 10, 2010, 03:25:11 AM
But that's only 4 x 23 = 92 character models, right?  I mean, it's not one character taking on four jobs at once in some kind of mixture; it's four characters with access to 1 of 23 jobs at a time.  Now that makes for a lot of combinations for the player to consider as strategies, but the game still only needs the stats for 23 jobs and 92 playable character models programmed in.  In Kirby 64, it was the game developers who had to come up with the appearance and physics of each power combination.
Title: Re: The Kirby Thread
Post by: Mirby on May 10, 2010, 03:32:22 AM
Good point. My bad. Still, in a dream Kirby game situation, this is what I'd want.

And it wouldn't be too bad. All the special Arrow powers would use the Cupid sprites; the attacks would be different. Crash would remain the same all around; the effects would vary. Boomerang powers would use the same sprites. All that would really be different would be the effects in my vision.

Well, I have finally got 100% on Kirby Super Star Ultra for the Nintendo DS. Helper to Hero was a chore, that I have beaten Meta Knightmare Ultra and The TRUE Arena... again. It was then that I have realize that I have forgotten a secret passage at Dynablade. Geekgo4, you idiot!

As I said before, Kirby power is growing by the hour and and it won't be long till he reaches Game Breaking stats. So, why not use more than one gimmick? Copy Fusions and Helper Summons? HELL YEAH!

I liked Kirby 64, didn't play too much of that though. I rented it.

I'll have to try more Kirby games one day soon. I didn't even know about him until SSB64. He's my favorite character to use.

Abilities

In Epic Yarn, Kirby can't copy abilities and he can't fly, but he has a variety of forms he can transform into. They are called "Transformations". There's a total of 16 of those in the game. Here's some of them.

Submarine : As soon Kirby enters in the water, he goes into this form.
Dolphin : Kirby can swift faster in this form. He can also jump through hoops, swim up waterfalls and bounce beads on its nose.

Parachute : In this form. Kirby goes into a slow fall. You can transform into this form at any moment by tapping the 2 button twice.
Rocket : Kirby can destroy enemies by shooting stars at them and fly around in rocket form in a similar manner to Space Invaders.

Fire Engine : Kirby can put the fire out in this form including fire enemies.
Tankbot : Kirby becomes this once he picks up a certain powerup. It can hover, has light-up eyes, and can shoot Missiles. When there are 2 players it has a boxing glove as well, and it seems that, instead of piloting the tankbot, Kirby becomes the tankbot while Prince Fluff pilots it.

And when you are not using transformation, you can use your Whip to catch enemies and throw them at others like the previous Kirby always did. The whip can also be used to open secret passages hidden in the background, reveal some power ups and make your way through the levels.

Co-Op
The game supports complete Co-Op gameplay through the entire game. You can beat Epic Yarn from the start to the end with a friend with a second Wii Remote. Here's a video that explains how fun/frustrating it can be.

In the recent Kirby Demo, Nintendo created a room completely made out of Yarn. It's so pretty that it deserves some attention.

Graphics look awesome, everything looks smooth.

Also, no Copy Abilities and no Flying? Instead we get transformations? Hmm, The transformation dealio sounds awesome. Since we get a parachute ability I won't be missing flying that much.

I'll be picking this one up next week.

And by Kirby Wii, I mean the one that we've been waiting for since the GCN and was pretty much Nintendo's equivalent of Duke Nukem Forever.

It looks more epic than Epic Yarn too.

DAT SWORD!

also, looks like Cowboy Kirby from the minigame in Super Star Ultra returns, and Cannon Kirby should be fun.

The abilities so far.

カービィ (Kirby): Normal Kirby that can gain new abilities by eating enemies.
ウィップ (Whip): The cowboy ability.
ソード (Sword): Link~ >u<
リーフ (Leaf): Grass thingy. ^^
ウォーター (Water): Surfing Pikachu Kirby. ;3

The fire dragon one, it could be just the ファイア (Fire) ability powered up.
The same way you can summon a big sword with the Sword ability. ^^;

Waiting for word on what bullshit motion controls they'll force on you like DKC Returns.

Also, I notice a fascination with 'big' things lately from Nintendo. Like giant super mushroom, giant sword for kirby, etc. In this case it seems like its working counter to the simplistic gameplay Kirby does so well.

Huh, so KSSU broke the "angry American Kirby" cycle, and this game brings it back again? XD  At any rate, this game looks amazing, and that Ultra Flame move looks like it was ripped right from a Darkstalkers game (I forget whose move that was).  Water Kirby finally being playable after all these years is a huge plus, too.

...I keep thinking there is ONE GUY at Nintendo of America who thinks Kirby must be sold as a badass action hero, and nothing else. This can't all just be a funny coincidence. Heck, maybe they're carrying it on as a joke.

Although Kirby IS a Lovecraftian beast who subjugates smaller nonharmful races to its enormous appetite and brings angryfaced monarchs back into their thrones, so he's probably got something there.

American kiddies aren't simply attracted by cuteness. They gotta have action brought to the table.

...that, and it's all a lone man attempting to show Kirby's true nature. God bless him in his crusade.

Alright, I've never played Epic Yarn, but watching this gameplay alone leads me to believe that Return to Dreamland would be a much better purchase. This looks so satisfyingly terrific to play.

It most assuredly is. Epic Yarn is a visual delight, but due to the game itself being probably the easiest platforming game of all time, if you're not going for a no-hit run of the game, there's just no game there. It's beautiful, of course. But it fails in delivering much. While this game seems VERY, VERY good, and while keeping with the multiplayer co-op platformer trend, it looks like it can get chaotic.

I can't wait for this and Rayman Origins. If everything goes well, I just might be able to play this with my friend through emulation (trololo).
Unless Rayman Origins comes out for PC too... in which case I only have to worry about Kirby.

In any case, I like what I'm seeing. This reminds me of Amazing Mirror, and that was an awesome game for two players (or more).

Is it just me, or does the kirby on the bottom left holding on look like he's humping the other kirby?

Anyways, yup. I'm definitely getting this game. Even though it's not a true Kirby game. It's more like a Touch & go game, really.

It is the ONLY decent way to play Wii games. No other way to make them look beautiful otherwise. I can't even stand them on my VGA output anymore.

I'm still a bit disappointed they didn't add Mecha Dedede in the game. Well at least there was a reference of it in Mass Attack, among a ton of other fanservice references in that game's mini-game library. Do hope to see him as a main boss battle in a future Kirby title.

But aside from that, Return to Dreamland is awesome.
Halfway through Extra Mode. Stages aren't really any harder then the regular game, even if your HP has been cut down to %40. Good to see some additional enemies getting in your way, but again, they don't really provide much of a challenge. The EX Bosses really fun to fight though.

By the way, is there a point in getting the Platinum Medals on the Challenge Stages, other than bragging rights? Do we get any extra goodies for mastering the levels?
Also, http://www.destructoid.com/here-s-how-kirby-s-return-to-dreamland-could-have-been-214360.phtml

Cel-shading looks nice, but I'll admit I prefer the style we got for the game. And a fully 3D Kirby, that isn't a racing game, would be a really interesting and most likely fun game to see.
