Title: Games everybody dislikes, that you like
Post by: OKeijiDragon on May 05, 2010, 05:54:59 PM
Why don't we talk about what games we like that others dread. =P

Anyways, I always enjoyed this game ever since I was about nine years old:

Yep, a 16-Bit Simpsons game. Note that this is the Super Nintendo version, and that dogshit degraded Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port. Personally, I feel that this is one of the most underrated games based on the Simpsons license, at least. To many people the controls suck, but I think it just needs some getting used to for a little while; even then, it's loads better than how say ShTH plays. It does have some irritating moments in the game, but it definitely not an impossible game to beat, it just takes trial and error. This is my second favorite Simpsons game behind Hit & Run, which is admittedly a superior game. I haven't played any of the other 16-Bit Simpsons titles so I don't know what the rest of them are like.

Last year, I got to play it again after disusing it for so many years and did a PEMNAS video run on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F196AAEC787ADCFA). It got so popular that it's gradually becoming one of the first results that show up when you search "Virtual Bart" on YouTube and even Google! [spoiler]PEMNAS stands for "PLEASE EXCUSE MY NOOB ASS SKILLS". I invented the term myself.[/spoiler]
Here are some of my favorite levels in the game:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BANuB-POCGs&[/youtube]
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz9y6BmEa8k&[/youtube]

But enough about me, what games do you enjoy that others sadly [acid burst] on?

Ah, I remember this from before the crash. And it's counterpart.

X6 is on my list. As are Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, and the PS2 Castlevanias. There may be more that I can't think of at the moment.

For me it has to be Mario Kart Wii. That seems to be all I can think of.

I come from a forum that's outside of the Megaman fanbase, but I don't hear much about Star Force.

But you're right. People will hate everything. It's [tornado fang]ing stupid.

Honestly, most people this side of the world never really liked anything that had to do with the EXE universe in the first place, hell, I remember most magazine reviews here giving all games after EXE3 only scores of <6.

BN 4 - hell Shade Man was a great Villain for half of the game. I liked to fight regular navis and Heel Navis (Who finnaly weren´t just pussies that only let Viruses fight for them) I wish I could finish it but the rom crashes after the wood man fight....
Duck Tales 2 - C´mon people, show this game the love it deserves! Altough I just think this game is just overlooked rather than disliked...
Megaman X8 - I think it´s more fun than X3,X4,X5,X6.
Home Alone 2 (NES) - Weird game, but it somehow grew on me...
Monsters in my Pocket (NES) Dunno, kinda liked it...
TMNT (NES) - Never finished stage 6 but it still is one of my favourite games, screw you AVGN!

I've never had that problem with the BN4 rom...

My choices are Tai's, with the exception of Judgment, because I've never played it. I like all the EXE and SF games!

Also, Bart's Nightmare. Don't know if that one is generally hated, but I love that game.

How'd I forget X8? Add that to my list. MKW goes on there, too, I guess. I still think it's better than Double Dash.

Would Street Fighter 3 count?

::edit:: Oh, add Sonic and the Secret Rings as well.

Considering half of my GBA and DS collection is made up of underraited titles, that nobody seems to care about (and most of my home console titles are made up of (mostly) popular titles, so yeah). So I'll just name a few from various consoles:

Monster Rancher 2 (PSX)

I do belive not everyone was a fan of Monster Rancher at the time, and thought it was a Poke'clone on the PSX, kinda like Digimon was on the DS (and predecessors on diffrent consoles before it), it actually plays more like an arcade breeder. You raise you lone monster, freeze it, fuse it to create a stronger one (depending of the stats of each parent) or just to show off your own Mr. Badass.

Battle system was more fun, as you had more control of your monster too. the Left and Right analog sticks control the monster's basic movements, the X, Triangle, Square, and Circle buttons have the attacks, rather than letting the menu do all the work on a tiny screen.

Namco Musem (Multi-Platform)

While this gallery of games is Namco's way of saying "In Ya Face, 'Foo!" and most of the time was ignored, I kinda bought a few ports, and boy, each version had it's own set of extra games other than the big guns. You got Mappy, Toypop, and other [parasitic bomb] that nobody cared about, but it was on a disk so it was a very big deal, same with the GBA port of Xevious. Namco, we love ya.

Shadow the Hedgehog (Multi-Platform, again.)

Now I might be the only one who can tolerate (most) Sonic games, and this one pissed me off quite a bit, but I do say the silver lining to this game was the multi-player that nobody even knew about. Even though the GCN and PC multiplayer was vastly superior to the PS2 version, but for me, the PS2 version had a little more response than the most of 'em.

Super Robot Wars OG1 + 2 (GBA)

While the Super Robot Wars franchise was huge in japan, a small rebel force penetraited the sheild generaitor and landed on US soil, it wasn't very popular due to it starting out sometime in the handheld's lifespan (along with MAJOR GBA titles coming out) and licensing drama, but it had a cult following outside the US, which resulted of the Endless Frontier series to be brought over to the US.

Sonic Pinball Party (GBA)

Even though I own a copy through a compilation pak, it's pinball. and I am a fan, I'll admit. Tricky stages, challenging modes, and the Tiny Chao Garden made this one a classic for me (others had Sonic Advance and whatnot, while this title was mostly ignored without the two-pack, and I was in elementary BTW when the game first came out) when I got it used.

Jurassic Park (SEGA)

Now THIS is how a movie licensed title should be made. While it has bugs here and there, by far it's one of the best out there, yet overlooked at the same time. Playing as a Velociraptor was teh shiz. Why play Grant when you can play the guy that's trying to KILL him? Yeeahh.

Rocket Knight Adventures (SEGA)

While it may be viewed as a Sonic clone on the cover, but you know what they say, sometimes you just can't judge a book by it's cover. It's Konami, the king of TV show license based arcade games. While it was a platformer, it felt arcad-y at the same time,
with the story progressing at the same time while you are playing the game.

Being a kamikaze knight has never been so much fun.

While these are SOME of the games I own in my large collection, but boy, I had fun playin' them.

X6, man. The best gaming mess ever.

Silent Hill 4 isn't quite hated, but I LOVE the game, and people certainly don't love it, so there.

Gaia... I like how you used time periods separated by at least 5 years as the same time frame. PSX and DS; the PSX had died 4 years before the DS came out. That being said, your point is that people felt Digimon was a Pokémon clone, and had similar feelings for Monster Rancher. I enjoy Monster Rancher, myself.

Even though I seperated the time periods at least 5 years, what it meant was that a supposed "clone" of pokemon can surpass the origional, at times. Just that these games are somewhat overlooked. Look at Telefang.  :P

With a burning passion. Starforce represents all the wrong things to do with Megaman.

Also, "Games everybody dislikes" simply cannot apply to Kingdom Hearts. If you don't like Kingdom Hearts perhaps you should completely reevaluate whether you actually like video games or not.

I guess that has more to do with the fact that it's often the glutton for fangirls' yaoi fanfics (plus, it does get pretty FLAMING HOMOSEXUAL in some parts of KHII).

The only reason why Sonic's less popular these days is Sega's AND the fan's actions.

And Remember: KH + SQ/Disney = Ungodly amount of fans of both sides. It's very popular because of it's mixture of two already popular companies, I belive. And the center of mass run-down old gags.

I never liked it because of it's dragged-80-hour+ darkness story.

Hey, this was the only version of Mega Man Legends that I was able to play. I know people here will spit acid at me for saying this, but I actually enjoyed this game. It may not be as good as the PS1 version, and I really do want to play that version of the game just so I can compare the two versions myself, but the N64 version was the ONLY version of Legends that I was able to play. ~_~

MegaMan X6 (PS1) - Anyone who knows me ought to know that.  Combat in this game just feels a lot more large-scale than in any other, excellently portaying the feel that X and Zero are a force to be reckoned with.  Corrected quite a bit of the new concepts that X5 didn't quite nail on the first try, as well (Parts, ranking, dual armors, Zero's boss AI...).  Overall, my favorite main-series X game.

Godzilla Unleashed (Wii) - Unbeknownst to Daemon Hatfield of IGN, this actually is a separate development project from the PS2 version (a Save The Earth edit; and he also needs to research how many analogue sticks are on the remote/nunchuck controller).  But besides that, IT'S FREAKING PLAYABLE BIOLLANTE, PEOPLE!!!

ActRasier 2 (SNES) - Generally considered the inferior of the two titles due to being ball-breakingly hard and axing the town-building simulations.  But the soundtrack is amazing and it's nice for a heavenly character to actually have wings.  Well worth the practice it takes to conquer.  Could have stood less political correctness in the localization, though (7 Deadly Sins in a video game?  NEVER!).

Shadow The Hedgehog - While I maintain that requiring 10 playthroughs to reach the Last Story was a completely bone-headed move, this game is among the finer of the post-Adventure 3D hedgehog outings.  Finally reaching a stage where you can (and in fact must) freely Chaos Control without worrying about missions is plenty worth it.

Sonic and the Black Knight - I just got this game last week, and it has me utterly convinced that the fans will sustain the "Sonic cycle" regardless of game quality (somewhat understandable when the franchise has been "annualized").  It rocks, it controls far better than Secret Rings, and in exchange for never having to see the phrase, "don't get any spheres" on the screen, the worst mission you'll ever find is avoiding townspeople.  Once.  Seriously, if you have tolerated ANY other Sonic game from Heroes onward, I don't see any reason to not pick this up.

There's nothing wrong with accepting MM64 when your other options are not available (which is why I maintain that Capcom needs to get it onto VC).  It's inferior by comparison to the disc-based systems, yes, but it's still L1, and L1 rocks unconditionally.

X6 was cool. And Gaia, how did it take you that long to beat it? It took me no more than 60 hours with either of the PS2 games to beat it easily. If you're playing it for that long, it's no wonder you don't like it. Then it just gets slightly repetitive...

Shadow the Hedgehog was a pretty cool game yeah... i still have it actually.

Devil May Cry 2. Now i won't go and say "It's better then the other games!" because honestly it isn't and the story is terrible. But the game was pretty damn challenging and the final secret mission was ROCK HARD.

Its a shallow money raking title. It is a degraded rip of the EXE series, which was already pushing the bounds of generic cash cow [parasitic bomb]. The story is even more ridiculous and drawn out than the EXE series.

EXE and Starforce are a complete waste of the Legends team's ability. It should be criminal.

If you really intend to defend the game, don't read half the words in the first sentence only, and then reply to that. It makes you look like a complete idiot.

Do you know the definition of a cash cow? Note other descriptive words and phrases like SHALLOW and DRAWN OUT.

Yes, we know your opinion on the EXE/SS games. In fact, it only further proves the point where we like them and others dislike them. Don't make me revoke your name! :P

And every company has a cash cow series. Capcom has this, Nintendo has Pokémon, Sega has Sonic (people do still buy those games), Squeenix has both Dragon Quest AND Final Fantasy... the list goes on and on. They know the franchises are cash cows; why do you think they keep making new installments? Easy money. Even if subseequent games end up shallow and drawn out.

Not every single company, but yes most do. Most successful ones at least. I just wish they'd have not tarnished the Megaman name while doing so. They have Monster Hunter and endless Street Fighter ports to make money.

Even though that was essentially the core of your argument?

Okay.

Do you know the definition of a cash cow? Note other descriptive words and phrases like SHALLOW and DRAWN OUT.
Yes, I know the definition of a cash cow, the question here is: Do you? Because it doesn't mean "something that I don't like for ambiguous, idiotic reasons like 'IT WASTES WHOEVER'S TALENT' so I'll just say its conception was half assed for the sake of making money".

Also note that SHALLOW and DRAWN OUT was always a part of Megaman games. Remember the original Megaman series? No? Oh, I guess Wily wasn't behind every-[tornado fang]ing-thing after all.

I think the fact that this site exists shows that the series is a cash cow. If there weren't so many different series in the franchise, then there wouldn't be as many fans of each series, and this site probably would never have been founded. Or at least in this form. -_-

Star Force was pretty weak yeah. Personally, I find 2 to be the worst. I just really disliked its theme.
the first was interesting as it was new. the 3rd... has it's moments, and the Noise system is an interesting concept.

I Like Star Force 3... very much actually.

Anyway, what game do I like, that everybody dislikes? Hmmm...

If I were to think about it hard enough, then it probably would be Apollo Justice(many people hate it), Sonic Riders(It's fun in two player... kinda), and then there's EXE 5. Which many people hate because of liberation missions.

I like the liberation missions. : <

Also, I kinda like Blood Omen 2. Many seem to hate it, for its stupid [tornado fang]ing plot(lol Vorador is alive even tough he died long time ago).

I don't mind the liberation missions, myself. A nice strategy touch to it, if you ask me. Plus, the camera moving obviously served as the base for the camera in the JudgeTree comp in EXE6.

Even though that was essentially the core of your argument?

Okay.

Your reading skills still suck, again.

its conception was half assed for the sake of making money".

Sounds like a proper description of Starforce.

Also note that SHALLOW and DRAWN OUT was always a part of Megaman games. Remember the original Megaman series? No? Oh, I guess Wily wasn't behind every-[tornado fang]ing-thing after all.

For a game with 1 page of text tops, the classic series doesn't need to combat being shallow. However the Starforce series with hours of dialog better be doing something good with it. Sadly, they don't. You also failed with drawn out. A classic game that can be cleared in an hour or so is in no way shape or form drawn out. You can't even really tag the X series for that either. For a proper example of ways to not be shallow and drawn out, and still have a good deal of reading; see Legends.

Honestly, this is like debating with a household plant... How dull.

The whole reason of the EXE/SF games was to give a deeper story! That seems to be the point you're missing. And yes, it is like debating with a household plant; the only difference is that we each see the other as the plant. So let's just stop, because this is going nowhere, and frankly I'm sick of it!

Please tell me what I missed. The second sentence? OH NO
It doesn't really change the meaning of your [tornado fang]ing post, unless you have some fine print hidden in there somewhere, in which case, you're a cock, or you think that that sentence has some implicit meaning that is exclusive to yourself, in which case, you need to go back to basic English skills workbooks.

Besides, you're still giving bullshit reasons for why you don't like the series. If there's no Megaman in there, then just say it. No one's going to make fun of you (by which I mean you'll embarrass yourself anyway).

One mention of LEGENDS and everyone goes batshit.  :\

Reminds me of the time when someone mentioned E.T., they go berserk for nothing. It's Atari, back then all ya had to do was top your city's best score. It was nothing more than a time attack for high scores, peel off the E.T. branding, and you got yourself a nice little game.

Then again, it's notorious for being the first failed movie-based title, which years later many games after it fell for the "E.T. curse".
Title: Re: Games everybody dislikes, that you like
Post by: Mirby on May 07, 2010, 12:39:35 AM
First off, it was EXE that set him off. And secondly, I had the... misfortune to "play" that E.T. game. I put play in quotations, because that is stretching the term. You fall in a random hole looking for phone parts, and then slowly... slowly... ssssllllloooowwwwwlllllyyyy move E.T.'s head up, down, up, down, so he levitates out of the hole. If you do manage to get out of the hole without throwing a cinder block at the game, then you'll need to fall into another hole to keep looking for phone parts. And very few of the holes have phone parts. It's horrible, atrocious, and basically a disgrace to the name of video games.

Have you "played" it, Gaia?
Title: Re: Games everybody dislikes, that you like
Post by: Gaia on May 07, 2010, 12:51:04 AM
It was EXE that set him off then? Hmm.. must've thought of "that other guy".  -_-

Well, again, it's Atari. Of course it was bad, I've only seen videos of ET, it looked like the miscarrage of Nightmare of Elm. Street on Atari, and with soo much hate, at least it could be forgiven for the fact it was..

1. It's. Atari. The system wasn't powerful enough to bring that game to a certain potential, or they could have at LEAST held it off into the NES era, plus the infamous burial of video games (AKA "The Video Game Crash"), wasn't done in by ET alone, it had assistance from other bad movie-based titles, plus those "erotic" video games they had.

2. This is the "Games everybody dislikes, that you like" topic, I doubt anyone from this gen has an Atari 2800 (or an Atari EMU for that matter), but I know a few guys that have an Atari from the old days of gaming. Then again, it would've shown SO much more potential during development by re-working the script a little, removed the branding, and call it something else.

Yeah, I know there are several decent company-licensed titles out there, but certain games get a LITTLE too much hate, so it's forgivable. SUPERMAN 64 HOWEVER.. don't touch that one.
Title: Re: Games everybody dislikes, that you like
Post by: Mirby on May 07, 2010, 12:52:53 AM
There was never an Atari 2800 to my knowledge... I think it was the 2600, the 5200, and I think the 7800...

And it wouldn't show any more promise. Like I said, it is basically unplayable. Watching gameplay and ACTUALLY playing it are two different things.

Trust me on this.

And I had both a 2600 and an emulator for it.

Also, regarding the crash, it wasn't the burial. It was how no games had endings, so you played the same levels over and over until the killscreen or the game crashed. Or you died. The consumers weren't too happy about this; every game was a remake of a remake, basically. Sales plummeted and the industry died. A couple of years later, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System. They'd had some experience with arcade games such as Donkey Kong and handheld standalones in the form of Game & Watches. They made sure to name the console the Entertainment System and call the games Game Paks to separate them from leftover bad feelings from the crash. This is also why R.O.B. was packaged with the system.

They wouldn't have held off on it; why play a game based on a 3-year-old movie. The Atari wasn't powerful enough to do anything like that, except the basic games it had and, yes, unfortunately the erotica on it as well. Such as the infamous Custer's Revenge. The game wouldn't have been good anyways; they were given very little time and resources to make it, and that's why it came out so crappy. Stop defending it.

I don't believe he's defending it. E.T. was more of the killing blow, everything, yes Mirby, a remake of a remake.  Almost everything on the market was sold to people who couldn't understand the fun in video games so most of the products on there were crap. It was like this until people realized, "Hey this isn't fun". Then Nintendo went and rebuilt everything back, even had a seal. But now things are just like before, everyone is pouring in on crap games as even Microsoft and Sony give in to it. That seal meant something, now it's nothing.

It's why we have freeware games, and if I recall correctly, Video Games were to escape from reality like books, right? Everything just went down the shitter (naturally) after ET. Now that we rediscovered those games everything's hitting the fan.. again.

I liked X7. That's right, I said it! MEGA MAN X7! It had good 3D sections, with some annoying parts thrown in, but mostly fun, so I like it.
Considering your descriptor, I actually do agree.  Most of X7's failures (aside from X's whining) came from pussyfooting with the 3D/2D blend.  Certain mechanics are clearly meant for one mode and do not translate well into the other (auto-lock and several of Zero's attacks).  Plus, Stonekong excepted, I find that the 2D level design of the game was pretty terrible.  So, yeah, if you look at the 3D segments, X7 isn't that bad, as long as you can live with Zero's paper-thin Hadangeki.  In particuar I enjoyed Anteater's level.

And of course, there is something to be said for huge rifles, Jedi reflect sabers, and nuke-sized charged shots.  X7 had some definite strong points, arsenal-wise.

X7 actually had good 3D gameplay. Because of the same gameplay elements being used for 2D and 3D, it didn't translate well with the switch. What I mean is, for example, the 3D segments need to have faster running, but the slower running is what worked for 2D.

Honestly if X7 was fully 3D, with faster movement, and better levels/camera it would have been fine. The models and graphics were actually really good, and the music was too.

Boktai 1&2 were released in English. Bokura no Taiyo: Django & Sabata was released in English as Lunar Knights with the Ryuusei no Rockman event and WiFi excluded. Also, name changes.

This relates to my BN6 Graveyard? topic. Since the third game (Lunar Knights is the fourth), Shin Bokura no Taiyo: Gyakushuu no Sabata (Sabata's Counterattack) never came out in America, all Boktai-related stuff in BN6 were removed. Except for the poster above Lan's bed.

Mega Man 8. I literally love everything people hate about this game. The voice acting? reminds me of when I when I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons. The jetboard sections? they're a thrill! Too easy? Only the boring get bored~ Weak soundtrack? I loved the instrumentation!
