The real question, I think, is Roll. Understandable that she wasn't likely going to be playable in 9/10 since there weren't any 8-bit sprites to work with or other sprites from other games to use as a reference. Nut now that we're back in a 3D realm? Gimme back my broom-wielding terror from MMPU and TvC. She's got a HOUSE to clean~! 8D

Actually she was playable in the mobile port of MM1 with a full sprite set. And that is still no excuse since they created sprites for Bass who didn't have any for NES style.

Too early to say I told you so?

I mean, come on, it was obvious that this would be a stinker by everything presented.

IDK man, I've seen lots of folks (including several friends) excited for Forces. Maybe people in the places you're looking in aren't, but to claim that there's "no hype" whatsoever strikes me as untrue.

Yeah, I see the same thing. Lots of hype for this in some circles. Usually younger people. Mania bashing too. Or more so Mania bashing because Mania fans bashing Forces? lol

The Sonic civil war has started.

Also it's confirmed the demo isn't coming to the West because Aaron mentioned SEGA of America prefers people to experiencing the full game.

There is only one reason a demo of a game doesn't get released. The company feels it would do more damage than good, and will not help drive sales.

This is the most telling aspect. Basically SEGA of America is a little worried that if you play this demo you will decide NOT to buy the game. I think they realize now they have a stinker on their hands. So now, the best course of action is to let the hype trick people into buying it and pocket what money you can.

Holy [parasitic bomb]. They just can't help but to continue [tornado fang]ing up.  That one minute time limit is [tornado fang]ing insane. Who keeps making decisions for this game? The demo just makes it look like garbage. I don't know how they learned nothing they did right in generations and somehow made a game even worse looking than Unleashed or 06. Not even touching on the Mania comparisons. My mind is just [tornado fang]ing BLOWN.

Holy [parasitic bomb]. It's literally a straight, flat, corridor. I expected a bit of hyperbole in your impressions, but it really is just that...

What they want to do (rake in holiday cash $$$$) and what they should do (wait on Switch releases until they understand it and can make a quality product on it) are two different things imo. I'd rather have a late game than a shitty one.

It is possible that the decision couldn't be reversed in time, regarding the Mania backlash. By the time they got all the negativity from it, it may have been too late to decouple it from Forces to make their release date.

So they admit the port to Switch is bad? lol

Also I find nothing wrong with 30FPS. For certain games I prefer it over 60FPS as things happen too fast for me and I find more enjoyable playing games in 30FPS. Plus isn't games like Breath of the Wild locked at 30FPS? Does that make it garbage? No it does not, I get it, it's Sonic and he's all about speed, but being at 30FPS doesn't automatically make it a bad game.

Oh my god. You're one of those people. You seriously have no idea what you're talking about do you? A lower FPS doesn't "slow the game down". It makes it choppier. Harder to see, harder to discern movement. Harder to control your character and react. It's an objectively worse experience in every way.

It doesn't kill every genre or game, but it would improve every one of them undoubtedly. However for high speed platforming, fighting, an action games (at the TOP OF THE LIST is Sonic) it becomes increasingly paramount to have a solid high FPS so the player has a chance to control and react to the high speed elements on screen.

They said it's still work in progress but....when is the release date again?

Nov 7. The game is already past manufacturing and off to shipping at this point. It has been finalized a long time ago.

The focus was more that the mode does not change when docked. The system goes into high power mode, and yet the specs don't change? Lazy, or incompetence on Sega's part. Or its so incredibly rushed they didn't have time to implement such a thing? Regardless the reason, it's all bad news.

Also 30FPS is garbage, plain and simple. At the very least they could offer 60FPS in docked mode. In a high speed action game, it is pretty much bullshit to have 30FPS.

Heard Forces on Switch is 720 at 30 fps in handheld AND while docked. WTF ultra fail.

I'll be over here playing Mania. Call me when another good Sonic game comes out.

So they took a functioning input device, a keyboard, and shrunk it down, but still expect it to be used and not cumbersome? Have fun typing with the eraser on your pencil. Very carefully...

Just following a fad I suppose. No real interest in making it good.

It's to bring in people who fell off the wagon. People who don't buy game consoles anymore and wouldn't have a 3DS or a Wiiu. The old gamers who slipped out of gaming. And maybe it'll bring them back in to buy a new Nintendo console. It's a nostalgia sampler platter.

This time they double dipped and offered something that not even the hardest core fans would have, an unreleased game. It worked, cause I got one lol.

Secondly, Mania is not a licensed fan game. Mega Man vs Street Fighter is a licensed fan game. Mania, while it may have started out outside of Sega, was officially sanctioned and overseen by SEGA for the majority of its development.

Oh of course, but I meant more or less that fans made Mania. It's development is so not-AAA it could very well have been a fan game if not sanctioned by SEGA themselves. It's a sad state of affairs where your fans come in and show you up. They have a better understanding of what makes a great Sonic game then your core team...

Feels like Sega is getting desperate after being shown up by their own licensed fan game.

Honestly i don't know how anyone ever thought Sonic would make a good RPG. A platformer based solely on movement and momentum.

Mega Man X at least had a strong story component, and was less about the platforming and more about the shooting things.

So, like Super Mario RPG? Super Mario Bros, one of the most basic storied franchises of all time, was primarily focused on action gameplay. It gives, and continues to give, even less of a [parasitic bomb] about story than Sonic.

It's all in how the project is handled, and of course there were massive differences in outcome here. It's not Sonic's fault though. Sonic has an extended cast that goes way beyond being all clones of Sonic's power. When accounting for personal abilities the extended Sonic cast has quite the diversity. That translates to an RPG very well.

Time to get crucified for shitty opinions, but I kind of liked 3D Sonic more than 2D in a few ways. Being able to see farther ahead into the level being one of them. I felt like the old 2D games were perhaps too fast for the forward viewing distance you were given. The GBA games compound this by having even LESS screen space, and possibly even higher speeds. Though I'm not sure about the second part there.

And yes, I'm aware that I am shitting on a game that isn't out yet, but being a designer I can imagine the way it plays based on Generations and the other 3D Sonic games. The picture isn't pretty for me. Forces falls into the trap that a lot of the 3D ones have. Lack of a focus on the core principles of the franchise, too many characters, and too much edgelord (here in the form of awful custom characters).

Modern Sonic needs to K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid). But continually they fail to realize this and end up with an over bloated mess. The lack of focus moves the game away from its fast action roots and instead bogs down the experience with fluff. They can add as many upgrades, extra items, custom characters, new 'friends' and all the other [parasitic bomb] they want. If the core game fails to be at least as good as the old ones, why should I care? A shitty cake with extra frosting is still a shitty cake. Fancy, but still shitty.

I think releasing both was a good idea, if both were great games. I just don't think they expected the digital only budget title to have killed it so hard that people may turn their nose up at the 'new' 'better' game.

TL:DR Sonic Team forgot the lessons they learned and went back to their old, sub-par, tricks. Of course losing focus in the process, as usual. Oh and, Classic Sonic loses rings permanently. Yes, that is correct. You cannot pick up rings after taking a hit. A friend at Gamescom reported that back to me on the build he played. I REST MY CASE.

Especially after playing Sonic Mania, the more I see from Sonic Forces the more I want to vomit.

I have to agree with Flame here. The prospect of "Generations 2" was exciting but the more that is actually revealed about this thing the less and less I actually want to play it.

At current I have no intent to purchase it or even play it.
