Emulation / Re: PS2 Emu help
« on: January 14, 2011, 06:57:45 AM »
Oh. Looks like I'm out of date (0.9.6).

EDIT: Well, looks like you have a Beta. Technically, I'm using the latest, but I'll check out the Beta and see how it rolls :)

Ah, thanks. I'd update to the latest myself, but I seem to screw up installing stuff (that, and my computer may freak out and have nothing work right). Hell, I got the game and emulator from a friend of a friend, so I'm havin' to work off of what he had.

1) Try both the OpenGL and DX9/10 plugins, and find out works better for you. I normally use ZeroGS or GSdx9.
2) If possible, turn on multi-core (Config » CPU Config)
3) Use x3 Cycle Rate if desperate (Config » Speed Hacks), or even change your rounding options in Config » Advanced

Out of curiosity, what version of the emulator is that? I don't have those options (at least not the ones in 2 and 3). I'm guessing I have version 0.9.7.4095 (I can't find an exact 'version number', and that's the number that appears on the window bar at the top), and those options aren't appearing, or at least not exactly the same.

Emulation / PS2 Emu help
« on: January 14, 2011, 05:30:38 AM »
Ok, so I've got a game on my computer and a PS2 emulator that can play it. Problem is, the game is slow as sin. I'm trying to figure out a way to get the frame rate up so that I can actually play the game. If there's any tips on rather simple ways of doing so, please tell me, but if you need a specific list, let me know what you need to help out my situation (I don't want to flood a thread with information that may very well be completely useless). All I can really say is that I'm running Vista on a computer that's a couple years old, and the PS2 emulator is PCSX2. Whatever else you need to let me know, tell me, and if possible a way of finding out.

I know of a couple 'rubber-band' solutions, but I don't know how 'safe' it would be, especially considering how varied the speed of the game can get (it can reach around 60fps and dip to as low as 15fps, but it usually hovers around 20-35).

Gaming / PS3 problem
« on: October 06, 2010, 01:49:42 AM »
Ok, a friend of mine has some problems with his PS3. The thing is, each problem is different on every other game he has. He can go online just fine and use any system menus without trouble, it's when he's actually playing the game that the errors pop up. For example, on Guitar Hero, the graphics won't display properly and a giant block/line/thing appears over everything (like one big giant censor box) and on the create a character screen in Oblivion the faces for the characters will be lowered and physically pass through the chest and leave the eyes just floating where the forehead is.

Anyone have any general advice or what to do aside from buying a new one? He's willing to crack it open, so would it be a good idea to dust off the system from the inside, particularly the disc reader?

So, aside from Nintendo's awesome E3 Spot, some new titles from Capcom, and Microsoft's [tornado fang]ing hilarious fails, what else is going on? Seems like Konami's being disappointing this year, and I haven't heard a thing from Sony (aside from the Move, but if that's all they put up then [tornado fang] it).

So what are some interesting, non-Nintendo titles that got announced so far? (excluding Nintendo since, hell, just about everyone will list everything they put up)

Gaming / Re: Do RPGs need complex plots?
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:12:59 PM »
I believe that you have to have some kind of complexity in an RPG to get people interested in it at the start, but not having too much to lose people in the middle or extremely pissed off at the end. Yes, there is the whole "It's the journey, not the destination" zen crap you can throw, but would you really accept that line if the ending turned out to make just about everything you did completely moot or raise more questions and answers nothing that was raised before or even retcon various things that were clearly established before? If a game is too complex in it's plot, you lose fans and players, but if it's too simple, you also have the potential to lose fans and players because the story isn't that engaging. True, simple stories can work out, such as the Mario and Luigi series, but RPGs isn't exactly Nintendo's forte now, is it? All they really have under their belts would be the M&L and Paper Mario games that have any kind of complexity (because you can't count Pokemon since there's basically no plot and you're only playing to see new 'mons to throw around in balls).

Not only that, but the twists and whatnot are what help define a series or game from the rest of the bunch. Imagine if that instead of a complex break-out (that I would say started sometime in the SNES era and took a huge leap into it in the PS1 era) that all RPGs were just 'random group saves the world without establishing just who they are and what they're fighting' ala Final Fantasy 1. FF1 is really just about four people who go around beating up villains because destiny said so. FF2 is also on the same boat, just on a different end since it's about three people who constantly get a four guy who go around beating up villains because the bad guys are dicks. FF3 is about four people who go around repeating FF1's plot just with different villains, and Dragon Warrior/Quest kinda took the same route as FF2. However, like it or not, in FF4 things started to change. The idea of having the good guy start out on the villain's side occurred and was played around with after that, Chrono Trigger had the idea of using time travel as a way to create complexity and one of the first multi-ender games created, Shin Megami and it's use of demons as allies and going up against God, and god knows what other SNES era RPGs I'm missing that did something different. Then we hit the PS1 era with FF7, 8, Legend of Dragoon, and various others, and then the PS2 with Disgaea, Kingdom Hearts, and a whole tidal wave full of other titles. They're all complex in their own way to tell a story, it's just whether or not it was good that is the question.

And the advertising, oh the random advertising.  XD

Probably the side-effect of an indie film :P

I loved the movie, but there were still some flaws that could've been worked out. The first one is the length and pace. Mega Man pretty much just owns the robot masters in less than 2 minutes, and while if they spent too much time on the fights, it may have ruined the movie, the problem still lies in that it's something that still should've been taken into account. The pace was also too long in other places, and just how it carries out over time. I understand you may need to pad a movie out for character development, but if you're going to do so, then don't let it drone on.

The second one was Dr. Light. He seemed (like Flame said) monotonous and dickish, but most of all, he seemed REALLY pretentious. He kinda seemed to put in more drama than what was needed, and seemed fond of using rather big words when they weren't needed. There's also the fact that his actions in the beginning seemed to justify Wily getting pissed off; he flat-out fires the man and during the interview he never bothers bringing him up that Wily helped out in such a big way, and at that point, all Wily REALLY wanted was just recognition and get a bit of fame and glory (and can you really blame him? They've just made technological marvels that may have just very well spat in the face of God and Wily just wants a "thank you" from the people).

Lastly, the sound effects. I understand that this isn't a Hollywood production, but there were many times I saw something going on but no sound, such as a fight with one of the Master Robots one of them would swing a punch and connect, but no sound whatsoever, no clanking or anything. At one point, the background music even just stops in the middle of a fight.

Around 30

Personally, I'm hopin' for more. I hope that the 30 count is a 'what we have currently in our heads'. If they could push for about 40, then I'd be a damn happy camper, since MvC2 had 56 characters, and taking out various clones, there was at least 50 different playing styles, and while having 70+ would be awesome, I'm not stupid enough to not take in system limitations. 40 different styles and graphical models would be awesome, and there's enough characters on both sides to add in, and Capcom knows it. Also, best. subtitle. ever. Fate of Two Worlds :D

Let's hope that MvC3 is actually a prototype name for the actual title...Tatsunoko VS Marvel VS Capcom. Show of hands, who wants to see Cyclops, Ryu, and Tekkaman Blade beat-down Iron Man, Chun Li, and Polymar? XD

^Tekkaman Blade is a great character to use, and it sucks that he'll probably be an overused character within the next 5~6 months. A nifty little projectile that can teleport him across the screen, a rush attack that can go great into an air combo, and (if you've got the level) can go right into his Lv. 3 Super from the air. You do NOT want to get cornered by this guy. There isn't any real downside since he can even counter everyone's uppercuts thanks to his spear being longer than his hitbox (some guy online tried to do a Shoryuken and went right into my down+H attack instead).

There are some good Ryu users out there, but there's so many clones of him in the game that you're better off picking another character.  He isn't bland, just copied to hell and back in every other fighting game (Morrigan is more or less a direct clone with only one real move that's different, and that's her Valkyrie Turn).

Speaking of Devil Survivor, I'm still stuck with Belial and I don't think I'll ever be able to get past him -___-

If you have Ice Dance, you can hit him hard. Other than that, you'll just have to bum rush him with a ton of different people. Put a Wilder on the person who's stuck on the other side so they can get to the main party to help assault the guy. Having Evil/Chaos wave here does help out a lot since you can have that person snipe Belial while everyone else pummels him.

*headdesk* How the hell did I forget Drain? Ah well, it seems my playstyle's a little different to yours. I actually took Yuzu's route first to remove the EXP cap when trying the other stories. Mostly because of the final bosses.

The problem with Yuzu's route is that you don't get the extra move, and it's extremely helpful since you're able to cross more space in less time, which helps ease the missions in which you have to save someone.

If you're a newbie, you may want to focus on upgrading your Main Character's physical strength on levelling up until it hits maybe 18 or 19, and then focus on Magic and Health (with the occasional Agility boost), because otherwise Day 3's boss fight might prove tricky. Also, any Demon you can obtain with either Evil or (I think) Chaos Wave as an ability will be your friend, because you can snipe enemies from two or three panels away, and they can only retaliate if they have a demon with the same ability on their team. As far as passive abilities for your Main Character, Hustle and Tailwind are useful if your MC is lacking in physical strength or agility.
Cracking the Elemental Dances (especially Holy Dance) is also useful, particularly against enemy squads that only contain one member, as they'll take all the hits. I'd also recommend cracking Pierce onto one of your characters, so if there's an enemy squad leader that you CAN kill flanked by two that might be more tricky, you can deal full damage to the squad leader instead of the reduced damage normally dealt.

S'not much, but I hope that helps :)

I agree partially. Leveling up the MC's STR is a good thing up until about 15 or so (if you can score any attack increasing spells or so, do nothing but have your demons use them in the battle with the boss in question), but there's too many moments in D.Survivor where you have to rescue someone, so Genma or Avian or Wilder demons are a must, so grab the latest ones and fuse'em, you'll need the movement space (I don't know if Avian's abilities and Wilder's abilities stack, so it might be better to just have two characters to have a Wilder at the start and the other to have an avian, and then when you get the 4th member, give'em another Avian). Chaos Wave and Evil Wave are not helpful when you need to cross the whole field to get to someone.

The problem with the Dances is that they tend to only hit twice, not three or four times. Pierce is another good ability, but the major problem with that is by the time you have access to it, most of the enemies will repel attacks instead of null, resist, or absorb, so having an Almighty attack works better. Speaking of which, GET DRAIN ASAP. In other SMT games, Drain isn't that useful of a spell, but here, with the right members, you can drain the entire enemy party of their MP and spent none whatsoever yourself in the end.

As far as ending's go, you can try Noya's (or whatever the cousin's name is) path first, since the beginning chick leads to a bad end and bad NG+ (won't spoil anything, but as far as rewards go, her's sucks since she doesn't do much, while every other path gives you +1 to move). While it doesn't really matter what path you go down, Noya is a damn good spellcaster and can REALLY make up for what you lose on his path. Seriously, he's more potent than the MC (mostly), it just sucks that certain spells require other stats to be high as well.

Lag also can screw up changing. I don't how many times I have done a counter in a laggy match just to have my team mate come out and attack.

I honestly think the switching mechanic used in this game is just terrible. Seriously, back and Partner? Why couldn't that be the command to send your partner out to attack? I mean, it's not a huge problem, but this game has a terrible 'charge' system and there have been quite a few times where I've sent my partner out to attack when i meant to switch.

And as such, I want a whole new set up. New laptop, new external hard drive, new speakers, and a new mouse. The major ones right now are a new laptop and a new external HD, and I'm hoping to get them both for under $1000 bucks. Anyone know a place online where that may be possible? I'm not lookin' for a top of the line computer, but I certainly don't want a piece of [parasitic bomb] like Dell.

Ditto :P Though, I am startin' to love Tekkaman Blade, just because he's pretty damn quick with his attacks, and has a good number of possible combos, with a lot of different ends to them.

How naive, you're forgetting his mask AND ressureccion.

Ah yes, two OTHER abilities that haven't been revealed that are sure to help the ass-pulling.

Seriously, I doubt Ichigo's New Hollow Form would be able to take on Aizen, and that thing [sonic slicer]-slapped Uliquorra after he took everything Ichigo had before and didn't get a scratch. I honestly wonder just how the hell Titty is going to end this series thanks to all of Aizen's Ass God Moding.

And risk getting slashed/stabbed/frozen when getting in the way of 3 captains and Vizard?

Feeling is also a sense you know, if you don't feel you're getting hit/slashed/stabbed/whatever you're not gonna pay much attention to it.

Still doesn't excuse them for being stupid. Like I said, if the two strongest fighters (at the time) were deflected by a finger, does anyone honestly think that three weaker ones and a Vizard would be able to do anything? Ok, maybe hold him off, but did no one think that he'd easily break out of the ice? Not only that, but the whole 'controlling the senses' thing is essentially god-modding, and also fairly unexplained. Does he have to have perfect concentration, is it just an area that's affected, does he mind-control everyone at the same time (if so, what's the limit), and at what point does his power 'wear-off'? Has he secretly killed off Yamamoto and just dicking around with people now? There's also the fact that his Bankai hasn't been revealed, which means that as soon as someone, be it Ichigo or whoever, has a legitimate edge in battle against him, he'll use it and just reset the 'status-quo'. There's going to be ass-pull after ass-pull with him, and by the time he IS killed off, no one will give a damn and instead just say "Finally!".

...you do remember the whole "control the five senses (ex.: hearing)" power that Aizen has correct?

Still doesn't answer the question that the entire damn time it seemed too easy. The guy shrugged off several Bankai's at once before, and there hasn't been any real growth that made a huge leap in power, and yet NO ONE thought that all of a sudden Aizen being frozen and helpless was suspicious? Not only that, Ichigo could have easily kicked them in the head, he IS the only one who can fight on a Captain level and also NOT affected by Aizen's power. Granted, maybe only the healing squad leader knew about it, Ichigo could have still done SOMETHING physical if all his shouting wasn't being heard. Apparently Aizen's ability extends to making everyone around him dumber than a fish.

I'm lovin' the Wheel Cutter and Solar Blaze. Thunder Wool is pretty cool, but it seems like it'd sap up a lot of power to use, while not doing too much in the way of doing anything other than attack.

Because the R.O.C.K. system relies on the abilities of the soul inside of the LiveMetal. Model X gives X's powers, Model Z gives Zero's powers. Albert's power is Shin Trans On, an improved version of what was used centuries ago by the New Generation Repliroids and their prototype. Axl is the only known non-irregular user of the copy chip, has S-class Hunter skills on par with X and Zero and has the single most greatest renown. Albert was just going to overwrite the Livemetal's will anyway, leaving Grey with a very capable Livemetal that shares Albert's Trans On ability.

Ok, over-writing the will actually make sense, and doesn't seem stupid anymore.

Do tell...

The holes were about the whole use of Axl's soul in the biometal, but if Albert was just going to shove his will into a device to power it then erase whatever would make it unobedient, and use it as a backup drive, then there really aren't any holes. I had assumed that Albert was just a moron and didn't think his plans through.

LOL it looks like Koma has learned a thing or two from Miles "Tails" Prower. 8D I'm guessing certain support characters can only be used by certain characters in the team.

More than likely, but that really helps to make the game better in combat as well as potentially making member choices more difficult to help balance things out.
