X / Wait wat, a gritty FPS MMX reboot was actually going to be real?

In 2010, Capcom tapped the talent behind Metroid Prime to bring Mega Man into the modern age — only to have the game suffer the fate of similar recent attempts to find a new audience for the 8-bit hero.

Codenamed Maverick Hunter, the first-person shooter had the blessing of Mega Man's creator and a talented team tasked with attracting a new generation of fans. But the departure of Keiji Inafune likely killed the most interesting take on the 25-year-old character to date.

Mega Man's foray into the first-person shooter genre looked, at least on paper, like a formula for success. One of a handful of collaborations with Western developers kicked off by Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, the Mega Man first-person shooter was in development at Austin-based Armature Studio, the promising developer founded by Metroid Prime's creators. The new Mega Man would have been redesigned by the concept artist responsible for adapting Iron Man's armor for Marvel's successful film franchise. Thematically, the game would have built upon the mythology of Mega Man X, a series that was a darker, more mature spin-off of the cuter, classic Mega Man franchise.

The game would have stayed true to core Mega Man X gameplay concepts, re-imagining his X-Buster arm cannon, his dash and his ability to appropriate the special powers of his fallen enemies. Platforming elements, including X's wall jump, and classic Mega Man X characters would have been re-imagined in new ways.

Unfortunately, Armature's Mega Man first-person shooter, Maverick Hunter shared the fate of the Blue Bomber's other recent projects — Mega Man Legends 3, Mega Man Universe, Mega Man Online — and was canceled before the public ever had the opportunity to see it.

According to a number of Capcom sources, Armature's Maverick Hunter was prototyped and playable. It had a short lifespan, only about six months in the first half of 2010. It showed promise, sources said, but was deemed a significant gamble, and quietly killed before Inafune publicly exited Capcom in late 2010.

Capcom Announces the Start of a Major Project for Children's Content
- Alliances established with leading providers of content for children -

Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) is pleased to announce the start of a new project for children's content. As part of the project, Capcom has decided to begin selling "Gaist Crusher" in the winter of 2013, which is a completely new game for the Nintendo 3DS™.

The important theme of the new project is the creation of new Capcom content for children. Elementary school age boys are the primary target of the project. With emphasis on armors, transformations and collections, the project will utilize the cooperation of companies in a broad range of fields such as games, comics (manga), anime, music and toys. Overall, this will be an expansive cross-media project. With the number of children in Japan declining, Capcom plans to use this project to attract interest in new brands and firmly establish these brands by continuously launching a diverse range of content.

The "Gaist Crusher" game, which will be the key element of the project, is an action game that draws on two Capcom strengths. One is expertise in producing content for children that was gained from Capcom's "Mega Man" series. The other is the high-grade multiplayer capability that generated a strong response for the "Monster Hunter" series. Capcom plans to leverage these strengths to produce a game that excels in terms of both its worldview and game playing characteristics.

For cross-media activities associated with "Gaist Crusher", Capcom plans to start by using manga in the "Saikyo Jump" and "V Jump", two magazines published by Shueisha Inc.. Cross-media will also include an anime project produced by Pierrot Co., Ltd., music produced by Avex Entertainment Inc., and toys called "Gaimetal" from Bandai Co., Ltd., all linked to the new game.

Capcom is determined to continue meeting the high expectations of consumers by creating highly original new games that take full advantage of its outstanding content development skills. Furthermore, Capcom will use its multi-use approach for content with the aims of maximizing earnings and playing a role in energizing the entire content market.

I'm gonna guess that the Megaman part mostly refers to all of the EXE related cross media stuff and merchandise more than anything.

Trying to beat the 3DS releases with only the buster unless necessary got me wondering what the general opinion on this was.

Of what I've tried so far with only the buster, 2 wins the "easy" one with 7 as its competition but being disqualified because [tornado fang] Wily. Hardest though, I can't really say until I play everything else again, but I'm gonna guess MM&B simply because it's freaking MM&B.

Japan and Europe have had their fun, now it's time for the North American eShop to get in on the action. Each of the classic NES Mega Man titles (that's 1~6) will come to said eShop beginning with the original Mega Man on December 27 - that's 10 days from now!

This will be followed by Mega Man 2 on February 7, with the rest of the games coming in regular intervals throughout 2013. You'll soon have the whole collection on one handheld!

I need to get some money into my 3DS account now. Damn the lack of 3DS cards in this country.

SNK Playmore has a home version of The King of Fighters XIII ready and the company publishing the title in North America may surprise you. No, it’s not Ignition. It’s Atlus! The King of Fighters XIII adds fan favorite characters like Yuri, King, Kula, K’, and Mai back to the ring. All of fighters, new and old, have NEOMAX supers and rebalanced move lists.

When The King of Fighters XII came to consoles the game had issues. SNK assures fans they addressed problems from the previous title. The King of Fighters XIII is faster, has more than six different play modes, and characters that better stand out from the game’s vibrant backgrounds. Most pressing are online issues and SNK claims The King of Fighters XIII is vastly improved, thanks to community feedback.

"We view KOF XIII as an oppertunity to deliver a high definition KOF game that meets and exceeds fan expectations. We have worked very hard to listen to all of their concerns and suggestions, to incorporate all of their feedback and ideas, Ryo Mizufune, President of SNK Playmore said. "We are excited to work with Atlus to bring The King of Fighters XIII to North America."

Atlus has The King of Fighters XIII slated for a holiday season release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Gaming / Phoenix Wright, now objecting in live action.

It was all true. Phoenix Wright, the Ace Attorney himself, is heading to the big screen in Japan. All the amazing and juicy details are below!

Capcom is pleased to announce that the popular game, “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney”, will be made into a live-action feature film.

In the “Ace Attorney” game series, players take on the role of a defense attorney who fights for the lives of his clients. The first game in the series was released in October 2001, and since then, this popular courtroom battle series has gone on to ship over 4.1 million units worldwide (as of March 31, 2011). This critically acclaimed franchise has also inspired cell phone games, comic books, character-based merchandise, as well as orchestra concerts involving the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and even a stage musical by the Takarazuka Revue.

In the movie, the main protagonist, Phoenix Wright, will be played by Mr. Hiroki Narimiya, while rival prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth, will be played by Mr. Takumi Saito. Pheonix's assistant and spirit medium Maya Fey will be played by Ms. Mirei Kiritani. Mr. Takashi Miike of “Crows Zero” and “Thirteen Assassins” fame will be lending his directorial talents to the film. Production management will be handled by Nippon Television Network Corporation and distribution will be handled by Toho Co., Ltd. The movie is scheduled to be released in early Spring 2012 at all Toho Cinemas nation-wide.
Capcom continues to provide entertainment in the form of movies based on our most popular franchises, such as last November's smash hit “Resident Evil: Afterlife”, which broke box-office records for the series. Currently, a full-length CG movie, “Resident Evil: Damnation”, is in full production. In addition, the animated “Sengoku BASARA” feature film, “Sengoku BASARA - The Last Party”, is scheduled to open on June 4, 2011.

As always, we at Capcom will continue to pursue our “Single content multiple usage” strategy by making advancements on new hardware to maximize sales while leveraging our brands to bring maximum satisfaction to as many of our users as possible.

Anime & Manga / The World God Only Knows
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:54:44 PM »
Ok, I know there's at least 2 other people here reading/watching this and I've been wanting to discuss this series with someone for a while.

Summary from TVTropes
Quote
Keima Katsuragi is famous on the Net as "The Capturing God"; there is no Dating Sim that he cannot beat, no heroine he cannot capture — while in real life he's known as "otamegane" and hates all real girls. One day, he receives a provocative email asking for his help in capturing some girls. He rises to the challenge, inadvertently making a Deal With The Devil to help Elsie, a low-ranking devil, catch runaway spirits. Apparently the spirits only hide in the hearts of troubled girls, and the only way to get them out is by making the girl fall in love. If he fails, the contract will take his head!
Thus begins Keima's daunting task as the human partner of a runaway-spirit catcher, which throws him deep into exactly what he's been dismissing: Real life, and more importantly, real girls.
^
Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that the story gets more serious later on.

Anyways,  about this chapter
[spoiler]Oh my [tornado fang]ing god, meido Keima XD I imagine that's gonna confuse that vintage girl and she'll attack/kidnap the wrong person.[/spoiler]

-All VAs are the original ones
-Meguro is doing the music
-Seiji Kishi from Angel Beats is the director
-AIC A.S.T.A is doing the animation

Anime & Manga / 4kids loses Yu-Gi-Oh. They get sued too.
« on: March 29, 2011, 11:05:00 PM »
Quote
4Kids Entertainment has made quite a business out of taking Japanese anime programming like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! and dubbing it into English for the pleasure of U.S. children. Just how lucrative? The Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, including a popular TV show and various merchandising, is said to have earned 4Kids over $152 million in income between 2001 and 2009.

But now, the Japanese animation studio that first created the anime hits is attacking, claiming that 4Kids owes it millions of dollars for making secret agreements with TV networks and home video distributors as well as making improper royalty deductions, including for the cost of the actual dubbing. As the result of alleged contractual breaches, the Japanese companies behind the show reveal they have just terminated their licensing agreements with 4Kids. They now want past money owed too.

TV Tokyo Corporation and Nihon Ad Systems filed the lawsuit last week in New York federal court.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs exercised their right to audit 4Kids' financial books in 2010 to see whether they were getting paid 50% of gross income, minus pre-defined expenses, as agreed upon in the original licensing agreement.

The auditor allegedly turned up some questionable accounting concerning deals made by 4Kids with the Cartoon Network and other parties.

For example, 4Kids is said to have made an agreement with  Funimation Productions, giving it the right to exploit the YGO series on home video. "4Kids conspired with Funimation to fraudulently hide from Plaintiffs more than 45% of the total income Funimation paid to 4Kids from the sale of the home videos," the complaint states.

Allegedly, 4Kids not only licensed YGO, but also several other Japanese animation series it didn't own. Under the terms of this supposedly secret deal, which allegedly included a strict confidentiality clause, 4Kids didn't have to do much besides perform certain marketing services. It was Funimation's job to produce and distribute the series, and for this right, Funimation paid a $1.3 million advance and gave over nearly $4 million in a service fee, which was allegedly then hidden from the plaintiffs.

4Kids is said to have made a similar "strictly confidential" deal with Majesco Sales Inc. to produce and distribute videos of the YGO episodes on Nintendo's Gameboy Advanced game system, and allegedly never turned over any royalties.

The complaint also details some improper deductions, including more than $2.5 million worth of international withholding taxes, bank charges, insurance coverage, YGO style guide art, the cost of the audit itself, and even the cost of the dubbing. TV Tokyo says 4Kids "expressly agreed to bear [such costs] under the agreement."

After the auditor's report, the parties met in February to discuss the situation. The plaintiffs are said to have made an offer, which was rejected. After further discussions, on March 17, 4Kids wired $1 million as a "good faith" initial payment. The next day, reps for the Japanese companies flew to the U.S. for a final meeting to see if they could resolve the mess.

"4Kids abruptly terminated this meeting without a resolution to any of the outstanding issues," says the complaint.

In response, TV Tokyo Corporation and Nihon Ad Systems have cancelled the agreement and filed a lawsuit, seeking more than $4 million in damages and other relief for breach of contract and fraud. The legal dispute also leaves the future of some of the most popular Japanese programming on U.S. television in some doubt.

Attempts to reach 4Kids for comment were unsuccessful.
