K, here's a quick example of both the lullaby that I've been working on and the moving icon.

The icon is jerky and one of the gears jumps a bit, and the lullaby has a few awkward places, but running them together should give you a good idea.

Heh, the icon shown above has gears for a reason. When selecting the game off of the PSP menu, I've set it up so that the gears begin turning and it plays a music-box theme song I've been working on. I think it goes well with the background which shows Roll in a stasis tube.. a soft, sad little lullaby for the sleeping girl robot. I'll probably post both the soundtrack and an animated gif version of the icon turning in the next day or two so that you can kinda tell what it was intended to be like.

And since I completely forgot to say it : Thank you to Dr. Wily II, Captain Kitsu and countless others on the IRC channel that sat through my preliminaries of both of these two ideas. If anyone is interested, I'll probably post my sketches on my deviantart page soon if only to see how much digital work went into making them.

Fan Games / Icon and Background

So, after having gone silent for a while, it's about time that I showed off something new towards my project:) The following PSP icon and background will be used for my project (yay and junk!)

Icon:

Background:

I've intentionally left that unfilled space for the background because I am considering putting the game title or perhaps some text there.

Any thoughts?

Firstly, because I have always enjoyed the MMX style more than the original, and second.. because the sort of game I'm intending to make will be on a complexity level beyond what really fits the sixteen bit appearance. I wouldn't want to mislead people by promising one sort of experience with the graphics and then delivering a very different sort with the gameplay... oh, and thirdly? Because I don't see many other people trying it and what's the fun of a project if you don't challenge yourself to set a path apart?:)

Thank you Borockman, I'll try to use that format in the future.

Well, I studied the MMX format some more trying to figure out how I could make my image a little more... zippy.. like I find X to be. I played with some of the coloring techniques they used as well as adjusted the stance a little. Here's how it changed...

Version 1 (in PNG format now)

Version 2 (thinner frame, more 'metallic' coloring imho)

I personally like version 2 better. It just seems less bland to me.

Any recommendations instead then?

Heh, if we worked off the premise of "Others have used that character as their hero" there wouldn't be any megaman fan games at all. Megagirl Roll looks like a good attempt to recreate a classic megaman game with Ms. Pacman slant to it. I think I can reliably say that despite us both choosing Roll as our main characters, our end goals are quite different. I'll be aiming for something closer to MMX style graphics with RPG elements and a more open-ended world style. Still, all of this is just words from me. I think it will mean more as I work on and release other artwork, videos and all that jazz.

Okay, so I've done a basic sprite with the kind of style I think I'm after. I did a few sketches off of the megaman X sprite sheets and tried to create something that had a similar appeal but emulated my concept sketch.

Be gentle, I've done a handful of sprites in my life. I look forward to opinions and definitely any advice. If anyone feels adventurous, feel free to try your hand at spiffing it up and showing me what I'm doing wrong ^_^.

Gaia -- Good memory. Yeah, when I first got an R4 I had started a project based around Roll with the same name. Unfortunately, between bad experiences with select members of the NDS indie community and a few RL big issues, I ended up shelving it. I think that may have been for the best in the long run as I have improved considerably in a few areas since then.

As for not using the MMX engine, while I'm not really conversant in it, it seemed to be aimed at a Gamemaker system which doesn't look like it could be easily adapted for the console development I'm doing. Feel free to correct me if I speak in ignorance. I really like the idea of megaman as a game that you can carry with you and I think it did a huge favor to expanding the legacy of the blue bomber. I figure creating this project will kill two birds with one stone by allowing me to both make a game that I personally will like and refine my skills for console development (I've done other forms of programming for years).

A sidenote: I do not intend for Roll to really play the same as Megaman would. I've been looking at developing some pretty different play mechanics that I hope will intrigue people while still feeling like a MM game.

The picture? Yeah, if you're looking close you might notice that the underlying buttoned dress and ribbon are based on the outfit she wore in Marvel Vs Capcom. I liked it and wanted to keep her girly. This picture doesn't show it, but she's in a red full skirt. And yeah, I did see the megagirl project:) I like it, but I'm definitely going a different direction. I'm looking at graphics closer to MMX style and I'll be developing for the NDS or PSP

Hello Folks,

I'm a new face around these parts and I wanted to share a project I've been planning as I just begin to get ready. I'll try to post my sketches, videos and maybe even eventually, game, on this thread for people to take a look at and share their thoughts and questions. Here's a brief rundown about my project.

Project Name
Megaman: Roll Syndrome

Story Synopsis
Thousands of years after the invention of Rock and Roll, the world is a very different place. Humanity fled to the stars to escape the robots that they once created, sealing Earth in an inpenetrable bubble behind them. Left to their own devices, robots developed their own civilizations and prospered. Until the Hunger developed. Deprived of humanity, the robots were slow to recognize a flaw within their own fundamental nature. While able to replicate and redesign themselves, they are without true creativity. Designed to learn and expand, this limitation resulted in a hidden expiration date for their entire world. As robots ran out of new information to expand themselves with, their AI systems collapsed and eventually self-destructed leaving behind useless husks. Survival has become a matter of hunting other robotkind down and feeding on their data. Even the most civilized areas are filled with relic hunters searching the ruins of once-great cities for AI systems with new data. One such group of hunter has stumbled upon a tank in an ancient lab and unleashed what may become the world's savior.. or its final destruction.

Notes
That's right, for those of you paying attention -- The hero of this story is Roll. Here's one of my first preliminary concept sketches. Feel free to let me know what you think of the idea, how she looks, all that stuff. No need to be nice. I'm a decent artist but I've already seen there are folks here better than I ;)

I look forward to your input.
