Title: Super Mario Maker - Dungeons, Traps, and Bowsers~ Oh my!
Post by: VirusChris on September 12, 2015, 05:46:13 AM
I'm surprised there isn't a thread about Super Mario Maker or possibly one for listing everyone's created stages for it that they've uploaded online for other people to play. You guys don't mind if I start off first, right?

After unlocking all the tool sets for Super Mario Maker I went to design my first Mario stage to upload and I always wanted to do a Yoshi-theme one... which is you have to use Yoshi to clear it, but near the end of the stage I made it so it's possible to clear without Yoshi if you lose him somehow, but you need him in the first part mostly. It's easier with the second part.

I do a lot of trial and errors on it until I got something I liked, though I do wish I could make the stage even longer. I like to hear your guys' opinions, feedback, and criticism on it and see what I could do to improve it.

The stage is kinda hard, but it's doable and fun to try to beat! Let me know!
Though for those who played my stage hasn't beaten it yet... is it really that hard? Only 49 people have played it and only 2 have cleared it so far.

I'll see if I can make a video of it, if I can find where I put my Capture Card.

I also like to see what your Mario Stages are so post your Course IDs here and let everyone try it out! Let's a-go everybody!

At first my feelings toward the game were like "It's just a level creator. I can skip this." But the more footage I see, the more it's winning me over. There are already a bunch of fun and interesting levels people have made, and the game is still really new. Down the line there could be a plethora of fun levels, where no gameplay session is the same.

I'm not going to get it right now. I have other priorities. But down the line I'll get it.

The good news is that there seems to be a check to see if the levels are beatable so despite being hair pullingly frustrating no level is unwinnable.  Plus you can skip levels sometimes in certain modes.

If I remember reading or hearing or watching, unless the creator of the level can beat the level they create, it cannot be uploaded. Which is brilliant.

I can vouch for it... you need to beat your own level for it to be uploaded for others to play it. So no level is unwinnable, but doesn't stop creators from making some hair-pulling frustration difficult stages from time to time.

Speaking of which...

Made a new fun and challenging Mario Stage! A Bowser Boss Fight... ok, not really you're just avoiding his attacks as you rush to the finish line really.

This one is pretty tricky, but not too tough. There's some hidden blocks with Mushrooms in them if you can find them and you have to find a secret room or two to make things easier!

Tell me what you think! For those who have SMM and for those who plan to get it, it's quite fun and I like playing other people's levels as well. It's quite fun, but I so disliked that one user's "Nonstop Runner" level... damn I think it was on the level of Kaizo Mario stages.

It's odd to say, but I really really hope there is DLC to this.  I just feel like there's so much more that they could do.  Slopes, checkpoints, Mario Land style, neglected power-ups, and even though it will probably never happen, custom music off the SD Card slot would be a dream.

Also, I need to constantly suppress my urge to kill over the fact that Daisy is not among the Mystery Mushroom transformations. O:<

Well, if ever you want to try out the one level I uploaded with the bare minimum assets available:

A79F-0000-0025-0614

Finally got around to playing your level, I have no idea why but the second spring kept screwing me over. I know I hit the jump button to do the extra jump thing, but it didn't do it most of the time and I died. Very frustrating controls on it... but for using just the bear minimal tools  from the get-go very good level design. Has a medium difficulty.

Anyway I got to ask... did you somehow hid a "slim" Mushroom by any chance? The one that makes Mario taller with longer legs and makes him have more jump power? During one of my runs I somehow got that Mushroom instead of the normal one and it throw me off as I wasn't expecting and mistimed out of my jumps and died.

It was from the same ? Block... how on earth did you do that to make it randomly give you the slim Mushroom instead of the regular Mushroom?

The skinny mushroom randomly comes up in place of a regular mushroom. But you can unlock it as a new item by beating the Nintendo World Championship levels. And to get those, just play 10 Mario Challenge a bunch.

Post by: Fxeni on September 14, 2015, 11:58:11 PM
Nah, I didn't do anything for the slim mushroom. I understand you can unlock it to make it permanently spawn, but I don't have that.

As for the springs... that's just the way they are, particularly the SMB ones. I actually don't like them that much, but it was the best way to get the result I wanted so... there you go.

Here's my current lot of levels...

A79F-0000-0025-0614 - Springs and Turtles, Oh my!
15C4-0000-0031-AF59 - Spinies pay a visit
8CC7-0000-003A-51D9 - Caves, Pipes and Walljumperinos
F75E-0000-003A-CCA5 - Spelunking in the Sea
A8E3-0000-003F-CBD9 - Château Fire Hazard
02DB-0000-0044-5BFE - Air Cargo Raid!
BAA7-0000-0048-8291 - House of Hidden Puzzle Blocks

Air Cargo Raid! is probably my favourite of the bunch.

“Super Mario Maker” is a bad comedy. Released in coordination with the 30-year anniversary of “Super Mario Bros.,” it indulges players in the fantasy that they’d be good at making video game levels. This sort of self-deception has become common in the age of digital consumption, and while there’s something utopian in “Super Mario Maker’s” appeals to community participation and sharing, the game quickly collapses into a scratch sheet of horrible ideas and levels you’ll regret having played. It’s a tool for the mass production of cultural refuse, single-use distractions that fail to replicate the spirit of the original.

How coincidental this came out on the same week Game Theory was talking about how the media is trying to demean Youtube's gaming community for click baiting. There's a reason I don't take the News too seriously anymore, then again I've seen even dumber things on the Washington post.

Well I mean, it is kinda true that most people have no idea what they're doing. The Expert Course is a perfect example of this.

It's fine though; that's what the skip function is for.

I imagine we'll get some updates for the Mystery Mushrooms as both Mewtwo and Lucas have costumes yet Roy and Ryu don't.

Wasn't it everybody but Mii Fighters got costumes for amiibos? Even all three Yarn Yoshis have unique ones and Mega Yarn Yoshi is a seperate costume too.

For DLC though I'd love some Mystery Mushroom for at least SMB3 and SMW level types.

The skinny mushroom randomly comes up in place of a regular mushroom. But you can unlock it as a new item by beating the Nintendo World Championship levels. And to get those, just play 10 Mario Challenge a bunch.

I'm gonna say, just finished beating those stages, they get easier as they go along, the SMB one is the hardest one and the SMW one is the best one. I lost multiple lives on both the SMB and SMB3 one but didn't at all in the SMW or NSMBU stages.

They're [tornado fang]ing cool as [parasitic bomb] though.

Yeah, there really ISN'T any excuse for not using Mystery Mushrooms in SMB3 since it's really just an alternate NES style.

I think the primary reason why SMB3 doesn't have the Mystery Mushroom is because of how they set up the toolset for style replacements. Mystery Mushrooms becomes leaves, become feathers, become propellerhats.

Incidentally, this may be why we've not seen any of the other nonstandard power-ups. What would they become in SMB style?

And a couple more ghost houses to wrap things up for this month (or maybe not... this game is ridiculously addicting):

Manor Mystery
E58F-0000-009F-165F

SMB3 style. This is a short level with basically one small and simple maze in it. This level kinda tells a little story with the way things play out (I basically thought of it as if the Boos were real people killed in that house... there's a secret to find somewhere in there).

Terror Towers
6029-0000-00A1-DE49

SMB1 style. Pretty straight forward platforming for the most part. The upper path is longer but easier, while the lower path is fast and tough. There's a big easter egg at the end that was going to be part of the mandatory route, but I was afraid the level would get too long.

Hope you guys enjoy it!

My first Mega Man themed level:

Mega Man M
01DA-0000-00AA-5B7D

This level has a stage select like most Mega Man games. You access 4 different rooms from a hub, and at the end of each room is a power-up. All power-ups must be used in an obstacle room before you can proceed into the final chamber.

You can do the 4 rooms in any order, and just like the Mega Man games, each room has a weakness. The item you get at the end of one room will always help make one of the other 3 rooms much easier. The rooms are all small (1 screen size) in order to accommodate deaths and losing powers. It's not a very long level.

The weakness cycle is:
Cloud > Spring > Ice > Music
That ^ is also my recommended order of rooms if you're having trouble somewhere. Definitely avoid starting with Music if you don't want a hard path.

This was made in SMB1 style for obvious reasons, but please be patient about that thing you're probably expecting in it. :) I hope you enjoy this level and all the Mega Man references! Please let me know if something's broken or if I overlooked anything obvious.

Hey! I just uploaded my latest level called Click Clock Wood 2D.

33A1-0000-00AF-5C88

It is an homage to Banjo-Kazooie. Beating the level is fairly easy, and if you're familiar with BK, you probably expect a certain kind of progression in this. However, I also added a collect-a-thon element to this stage, again as a tribute to the source. There are 50 Coins and 4 Green Mushrooms scattered around the place, which will take more effort than just beating the stage normally. Those are optional, of course, more of an extra challenge. :) I hope it's an enjoyable level even without the treasure hunt.

Rules about item locations:

1. There are NO hidden blocks in this level
2. There is one Green Mushroom per season
3. The $1 (and possibly a 1UP) you get for hitting the goal block does not count towards the total

Side quests (you get a little 'hooray' SFX at the end of these):

- Eyrie the Koopa » Remember Eyrie the Eagle from Banjo? Throughout CCW2D you can find 4 ?-blocks and witness Eyrie's birth, growing up, growing wings and finally... something. It's not difficult at all, just a little reference to BK.
- Free the Mole » This one is more of a reference to the beaver in BK who's locked outside of his home. In this scenario I made it the opposite... the mole is trapped and you must somehow free him. If you can't think of a solution, try maybe waiting a few more months!

Hope you guys enjoy it! Any feedback is appreciated. As usual please let me know if something's broken.

Smarties are officially the most controversial candy ever now....

Well yeah, obviously I've only ever had American Smarties.

I love Smarties. Quickie does, too.

Ditto.
Same here.

I'm sure the international Smarties are delicious, but American Smarties (some of which are made in Canada, btw) are the best damn non-chocolate candy ever, screw anyone who says otherwise.

So I finally got Super Mario Maker, and while I don't yet have anything wholly original that doesn't suck, I did get some Mega Man Legends love going, once I unlocked sub-areas (Why the crap is that the LAST THING they give you, anyway?).

BTW, I positively love the music they came up with for the SMB1 airship style. 8)

Same guy who uploaded my first Mega Man level on Mario Maker to YT has just uploaded my second MM level!

He found a couple of exploits that I wish I'd caught when making the level, but it's cool, nothing too broken.

So you can put wings on a Goomba's Shoe, but not on a Yoshi? O:<

Good news: Frog Suit is coming.
Bad news: It's a Mystery Mushroom costume.

I was playing Badge Arcade and they gave me a code for a Mario Maker level that looks like a Dog House or something.

^ If you have Mario Maker, just go to course world, then [Makers] tab, and then hit the tab that says (M)Official. That gives you all the official courses, including the dog house course that you posted. :)

You all knew I was going to do that, right?

So, yeah, it's the goal room of my SML 4-3 remake.  Enjoy!

What do you know, hackers have found a Sky Pop plane costume.  It's apparently not yet complete and will crash the game if you try to use it in a castle stage, though.

...it's a start, but I REALLY hope there's more SML content on the way than just that.

FINALLY!  I was hoping this would come with an Amiibo, but what the heck, it's a start.

But...if they're going to use an audio clip for her special pose, they very obviously chose the wrong one. 8D

You know after looking at some analysis videos on level design, I think I might have a Centipede's Dilemma I had no idea that level design is nuanced.  :(

So now you can get the Kanto Starter Pokemon as costumes, still no other Pokemon though.....

Oh of course now they get sound effects.

They'd better update Pikachu, Charizard, Jiggs and Mewtwo if they're giving those three their RBY sounds.

In a strange twist we get harem anime gril as a Mario maker costume.

Also they apparently updated the Gnat Attack minigame and holyfuck hardmode scares me. The normal one is hard enough with only 30 seconds to kill 30 bugs per level.

Try 50, and the Bob-omb ones take time away from you. I got past the first level with ONE second on the clock.

All this for a costume of those [tornado fang]ing obnoxious flies from Mario Bros.

I never got past that damn boss even on Normal.  I swear they expect you to hook your stylus up to some kind of vibrator...

Finally got off my lazy arse and made a level. It has multiple paths. Choose wisely.

This game can be too much fun. I'd link specific levels but I've made quite a few so here's my page on the Bookmark site (https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/profile/MirbyStudios).

If you like multiple paths, I'd recommend Castle of Choice and Choose Your Destiny.

Huh, I forgot that Bookmarks site exists.  Makes life a bit easier since I just updated/re-uploaded six courses.

I use it a lot, especially when sending stages to streamers since level codes are part of the URL for the stage on the site so it's literally just copypasting.

Also you can just bookmark my stages for later perusing by using it.
