Title: Gundam

Just going to make a general Gundam thread here to post about some of the new things announced for the 35th anniversary, plus it can be used to talk about stuff like Build Fighters I guess. It's good to have a general thread for these things.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin Preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzMo9sV_T-c#ws)
First off, the Origin anime has been implied to be done Yamato 2199 style by the the theatrical airings being referred to as "event screenings"; in other words it's a movie being released afterward as an OVA. The 1st one is called Origin I: Blue-Eyed Casval which covers Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun (Char and Sayla, before Char became known as the Red Comet) before the One-Year War in UC.0068 (with CG mobile suits) and will come out in theatres in spring 2015.

Obviously since it's called 'I' there will be more to follow but considering this was announced way back in 2011, it's still kind of disappointing to be honest but oh well.

Gundam: Reconguista in G (G Reco) PV 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX_kQZLb64E#ws)

Next we have Tomino's much speculated about project G-Reco which has finally been confirmed to be a Gundam anime taking place in the calendar system immediately after the Universal Century, the "Reguild Century"

All that's been revealed so far is that it is about the adventures of Berli Zenum (ベルリ・ゼナム), a member of the organisation Capital Guard (キャピタルガード) that protects the orbital elevator.

Character design: Kenichi Yoshida
Mecha designer: Akira Yasuda, Ippei Gyōbu, and Kimitoshi Yamane.
Music: Yuugo Kanno

It will be aired this Autumn though no specifications have been given on if it's a movie or TV series or whatever. Though a minor detail: In reference to Reconquista an article says that this is Tomino's first "chou-hen" ("long") Gundam in eight years since the Zeta movies, which means it's not shorts or whatever like the Evolves.

This will make universal century fans line me happy. Looking forward to G-Reco the most though; I mean having a classic Gundam remake is nice and all but it's not really treading new ground.

Best part of G-Reco? New gunpla!

Edit: Can't quite place it but there is something very Turn-A about how this looks; the mobile suits have that quirky style to them; very futuristic compared to the mobile suits of the universal century.

G-Reco has that Turn A feel, as well as some Eureka 7. Should prove interesting.

As for Origin... Yea, a bit disappointing... But it may be worthwhile in the end? *shrugs*

Jeez it's like the Zeong and the Nightingale had a child...Can't wait to see how this ends though I have a bad feeling Maridia isn't going to make it through this OVA considering how things tend to go for cyber new types. On the other hand I really really want to see that punk Riddhe get his ass kicked; so few Gundam characters inspire such hate in me.  8D

One thing kinda bothers me; Banagher is he a normal new type or a cyber new type, what ever experiments from the flash back in episode 1 were done on him seem to point to being a cyber new type and Full Frontal's dialogue that only an enhanced human can control the NT-D seem to hint at that too. Normal new types have never been referred to as "enhanced humans" they simply have unique mental abilities. Wonder if this will amount to anything or was just a flub in the story they never noticed.

G-Reco does indeed look interesting although it doesn't really... feel UC to me, much like Turn A (which is an interesting case on it's own, of course).

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing necessarily, but the initial impression I get is that I might just end up treating it like an AC (again like Turn A in that regard for me personally).

Quote from: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2014-04-17/high-speed-train-gets-a-gundam-inspired-makeover
The seventh installment of the OAV series Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, "Over the Rainbow," premieres on May 17. To celebrate, Nankai Electric Railway is remodeling one of its high-speed trains as the "Second Coming of the Red Comet" — a reference to Full Frontal, the leader of the Neo Zeon faction and the "second coming of Char Aznable" (who carries the title "Red Comet").

The train line is called the Limited Express Rapi:t and runs from Namba Station in Osaka to Osaka's international airport in Osaka Bay. The promotion doubles as a 20th anniversary commemoration for the line. The train will be painted red to evoke Full Frontal's mobile suit. What's more, three seats will be "reserved" in Car 5 for the Neo Zeon leaders Full Frontal, Mineva Zabi and Angelo Sauper — although in reality, Gundam fans can sit in them and take pictures, as long as they have bought "super seat" tickets.

In addition, Red Comet merchandise will be available at Namba and Kansai International Airport Stations. The scarf/towel and clear files below cost ¥1,000 and ¥700 ($9.82 and $6.87), respectively.

I realize I'm late to the party on this and all... I just finished Gundam Build Fighters.

It was [tornado fang]ing fantastic, naturally. But you know what the best thing about it was? It reminded me of the EXE Anime. Like, a lot. And that was just great. I didn't think I'd get to enjoy an Anime like the EXE series again (One day... STREAM) but GBF delivered and did it well.

Considering it seems most of the new stuff is geared towards UC these days, I'm glad there will be a sequel soon to sate my Gundam needs. Just can't get into UC. *shrugs*

Also finally finished Gundam SEED Remastered (and doing Destiny now) but I'm sure no one but me cares about that. 8D

Oh I know, most people actually have no problem with SEED when you get down to it. The disconnect is my love of Destiny. XD But it's cool, I "get" why people don't like Destiny and that's fine with me.

But yeah... Gundam Build Fighters. Holy crap. So good. So many unanswered questions about Arista and all that, I wanna know more. Fall can't come soon enough. (It was Fall, right?)

My issues with SEED and it's sequels more or less come from the unlikeable characters, the forgettable plot and the unoriginal mech designs; the use of stock footage certainly didn't help my low opinion. Sunrise if you want to reboot the UC then reboot the UC.  >_<

I can understand why people like it though, SEED is the jump on point for a lot of fans much like Wing and G-Gundam but for me I watched them all in order of release (minus Wing,G and the classic series) so getting to SEED after Turn-A was a major disappointment, SEED just seemed so safe and cookie cutter by comparison.

All my opinion of course, if you like SEED more power to you; there's something for all Gundam fans luckily.
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Protoman Blues on June 29, 2014, 03:37:52 AM

This is really what does it for me from Destiny. I don't really mind the mech designs at all and while I'm not overly fond of the story, I can usually get past that if I see some good fights. Pretty much all the fights in Destiny were stock footage. One day, when I have free time, I'm gonna make a vid with a "Firing While Flying Around Each Other" counter and count how many times they do it in Destiny.

BUT like Blue said, to each their own. At least Destiny gave us the song PRIDE and Lunamaria Hawke! XD

My disconnect usually comes from G Gundam, as I absolute hate G Gundam and think it's almost downright unwatchable. Yet, people love that show. Gundam Build Fighters is everything I wanted G Gundam to be.
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Blue Valkyrie on June 29, 2014, 05:24:55 AM
My disconnect is a few of the spin offs honestly, funny though for me I love G-Gundam for being silly over the top fun but I loathe Gundam Wing for be an example of everything that shouldn't be done in a Gundam series.

Wind started this whole "Un-killable Gundams" trend that really annoys me, there is no sense of danger when the heroes just stand there like a Dragon Ball Z fight tanking hits and then blowing everything up with no effort. What made battles in the UC entries so entertaining was Gundam or not an unlucky hit could end a main character.  For all the [parasitic bomb] AGE gets at least it brought back some tension to it's battles.

Wing also suffered from a very dull cast outside Quatro and Duo; the rest were either bland or just there to draw in possible female fans. I will say I liked Endless Waltz, it lacked many things that annoyed me about Wing.

Also not overly fond of Victory Gundam either, not really sure why either.

I would've been fine with G-Gundam if it stuck with the tournament stuff. It was everything outside of that which I could not stand.

Wing is a favorite of mine more for nostalgia & mech design more than anything. And, as flawed as it could be at times, I actually enjoyed the story of what Treize was trying to accomplish, with his manly man-ness!

I liked Trieze too, his English VA was perfectly chosen, as for G-Gundam like I said it's not for everyone; I just like sunrise took a risk with it rather than doing the rinse and repeat of the classic UC stories.

As I said with Destiny, to each their own.

The Devil Gundam overstayed its welcome, in my opinion. Having some side stuff outside the tournament wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but when it feels like nothing gets accomplished for the duration of that time, it starts feeling long and drawn out.

Wing I still enjoy for what it is. It has issues, sure, but at least the story felt like it had a good pace. The characters remained consistent throughout as well, which is something that can't be said for several series. Maybe too consistent in some cases I guess, but that doesn't bother me too much knowing many people who are that way.

I have a feeling that I enjoyed AGE more than the majority of people did, if only for the concept.

I still have yet to watch AGE. I'll get around to it eventually.

I still have yet to watch AGE. I'll get around to it eventually.

AGE isn't bad or anything but it is flawed, the series suffers mostly from pacing issues.

Generation 1 takes to long to get to the good bits
Generation 2 doesn't take long enough to set things up.
Generation 3 fixes these issues but devolves into SEED like story elements near the end.

Age has wonderful mech designs though and Flit might be one of my favorite gundam protagonists now, it's the first time we've seen a character grow up from young kid to old man. You'll find something to enjoy from it for sure.

I started with Wing honestly. It was... lacking. Gundam 00 did a much better job of being Gundam than Wing personally. I am SO glad that I'm not alone on my dislike of G Gundam either.

But yes, do enjoy yourself some AGE, PB. The worst of it is definitely Generation 2 IMHO. I didn't care for Asemu and it felt like it was over before it began. Which is fine, because Generation 3 was more interesting anyway. But ya know... might be because I liked SEED? Whatever.

I should go back and re-watch it sometime.

This is why I loved Build Fighters so much. It's everything I wanted out of G Gundam, but didn't get.

Generation 2 was kind of lacking, yeah... which is too bad, because I liked the design of AGE-2 the most. Oh well.

I enjoyed the pace of Generation 1, personally. It was definitely slower paced, but due to that it was probably the most fleshed out. It really sets the stage for Flit, and watching him age into an older man in the other generations was pretty well done.

Asemu... well, I like him in Gen 3.
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Blue Valkyrie on July 10, 2014, 02:01:24 AM
Yeah Asemu gets...whiny after they head into space, he was better when generation 2 was still on the colony; kinda had a super hero vibe with his double life there.  XD

[ARC] Gundam Extreme Vs Maxi Boost: Brave Commander x Inf. Justice vs Xi Gundam x 00 Gundam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtCykH-LkEg#ws)

The Brave Commander is a really nice machine, I wish it and the Flag (as well as its many variations) were featured in more games.

Jeez it wasn't even that long ago I got Full Boost and I'm already impatient for the next one, I suppose that's how it goes with these games.

Speaking of which, FB is having a summer sale of all its DLC. (http://exvsfb.ggame.jp/dlc/content8.html)

And I still need to pick up this game.

Seven years have passed since Sei Iori won the 7th Gunpla Battle Championship World Tournament. The Gunpla Battle Championship is now run by Yajima Trading. With new rules and battle modes, the game's popularity has become even more widespread.

However, the Seiho Academy that Sei Iori once attended has failed to catch onto the trend. The only member of the school's Gunpla Battle Club is its president, middle-schooler Fumina Hoshino. Currently there is no way the club can participate in the middle an high-school division of the upcoming All-Japan Gunpla Battle Championship, where players fight in teams of three.

Then Fumina meets a new transfer student. He is Sekai Kamiki, a young martial artist who has been traveling with his master. Together with a young Gunpla builder named Yuuma Kousaka (China's brother,) they finally have three members for their team.

Sekai Kamiki, Yuuma Kousaka, and Fumino Hoshino - Team "TRI FIGHTERS" is about to begin its challenge!

Airs October 2014 on Televi Tokyo.

Mecha designers: Okawara, Ishigaki, Teraoka, Ebikawa, 2 SD designers and real life builder NAOKI.

Gotta remember that people's memories are short, it's not hard to imagine the events of Unicorn were forgotten after a few decades (or however much time passed between Unicorn and F91 and then Victory) and things returned to their normal violent ways.

Turn-A still needs to happen at the end and humanity's destructive nature finally ended the world in that.

Not... really. Don't forget that half of humanity was wiped out in the first week of the One Year War and none of the conflicts we see after 0079 really reach the same scale. Other than the Crossbone Vanguard, Jupiter and Zanscare not a whole lot really happens in Late UC, if we go further into G-Savior territory things aren't really too bad, there's a food problem but they solve this by growing food on the bottom of the ocean (I assume they screw this up later.)

G-Reco takes place place 1014 years after UC ends and we don't even know how long UC lasts for, probably a good thousand years at least. The events we see in the series is probably pretty irrelevant in the long run.

I like Build Fighters because it's what I was expecting out of G Gundam way back when. Howdy everyone, thanks for the greetings! Inb4 Sm4sh and uh... yay ORAS!

And yeah, I am all for the series not taking itself super serious. That is entirely what I want from this... I just have a strong leaning towards Real Robot TYPE robots. All this obvious nodding to the FIST OF THE BURNING PASSION HOTBLOODED is getting... I dunno. I just don't want it to become the focal point of awesome.

But then, maybe I'm just being weird and need to STFU and just watch it. XD

Also, Ruri... no worries, I actually find G-Reco very interesting, despite being "loosely" related to U.C. Hell, I even like the G-Self design, I think it is awesome! I just haven't given it an actual run yet. Just got thrust into a new career, so I haven't had time to watch either show in any decent manner yet.

Reconguista is over. A shame, I really enjoyed the show.

The ending was about what I expected from Tomino but the final battle between Bellri and Mask was good and really well choreographed. Them also briefly going to this underground part which I assume is supposed to be the remains of Jaburo was a really nice touch:

And Tomino gave himself a cameo:

Pretty neat.[/spoiler]

Overall the show was definitely not a masterpiece but I think it put across the message it was trying to tell quite well - at least, I got it anyway!

I guess all that's left is Try but I'm not expecting anything at all, that show has since long disappointed me. Perhaps I just expected to much after the spectacular first season. Origin isn't much to get excited over either. I hope they announce something else that I can look forward to sometime soon!
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Protoman Blues on March 27, 2015, 09:17:18 PM
Try is definitely not as good as the first season, and I think it mostly has to do with the characters & lack of good rivals. The first season had some legit rivalries and purpose to the fights involved. They built the fights up from the very beginning, letting them culminate in the World Tournament. With Try, the majority of the fights are just kind of there. Sure, they look awesome and are over the top, but there's not the same sense of satisfaction when the main crew win. There were only two rivalries that kinda felt genuine from the beginning, and both involved Yuuma. He had the most character growth.
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Fxeni on March 27, 2015, 11:11:16 PM
Yeah, most of the rivalries that were present felt shoehorned in compared to the first season. Thank goodness for Yuuma.

Although it's been picking up, I haven't really been feeling Reconguista all that much. The writing hasn't been up to par overall compared to say Turn A or most of the other UC offerings. I haven't seen the last episode as of yet though. (and yeah, from the pictures you posted that's clearly supposed to be the remains of Jaburo)

Origin is... well, Origin. I like it, but I know what to expect from the manga. I will say the CG came across better than I expected it to, but I'm still going to miss more traditional animation (well, as traditional as it was at least).
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Archer on March 27, 2015, 11:57:38 PM
I can definitely agree that Reconguista wasn't up to par but I still enjoyed it anyway. I just generally enjoy Tomino's stuff in general, though that is a rather unpopular opinion these days.

Well. It was disappointing, Try really fell off pretty quick and like has been stated, if it was not for Yuuma, I probably would've dropped it.

I continued to watch for Yuuma, Gyanko (Mmmm... words cannot even begin) and Wilfrid. The only Gundams that really sat well with me were Transient, Portent (The End was pretty boss too) and the Lightning series. Too much of Sekai really just... killed it for me. But ya know, G Gundam and all dat. Unpopular opinion Ares go!

That said, it was really nice to see Kämpfer Amazing in action again, seeing as it was my favorite from GBF. And as much as I hate UC and couldn't give an eff about it, that Unicorn in RX-78-2 style was awesome.

All in all, was worth watching for Yuuma Moments, sweet sweet Gyanko and the last two episodes.

You ought to know the entire Lightning series is based off of UC Mobile Suits, just to add to another thing you kind of like from there 8D
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Adelaide on April 06, 2015, 10:51:22 PM
Oh no, I'm aware and the irony is not lost. XD

I'm not going to say that UC didn't have good designs, that'd be insane. I just... couldn't care for it. I could go into it and all that, but it's not really worth it. I will say one of the biggest reasons is because I detest the character designs all around probably.

And yeah, I get that it's dated. But that's just it, it's dated and doesn't age well. I can't like something just because it is a classic. Oh no, starting to get into it, I'll just stop there!

But... That was all Turn A's doing, not Turn-X! D:

While Turn-A might have the been the trigger it was the discovery of the Turn-X that permitted it's construction. I'm kinda curious what happened to the colonies that decided to turn their homes into generational starships and simply leave the solar system and if they were the ones who made the Turn-X to begin with.

Seems the earth federation found the Turn-X drifting and damaged, I'd assume they would try to adapt the superior technology out of fear of what would happen if the colonies returned?

Looks like the next few gundam series Rightstuf is putting out have been revealed.

Looks like its 0079, followed by Zeta, ZZ, Victory and Gundam X.

Any series that had a dub to begin with (like 0079) will include its dub. In addition 0079 has been confirmed for Blu-Ray, but its unknown if that one episode Japan really hates is coming over.

So Anime Network posted this and wanted to see what you guys think and what you agree and disagree with.  I personally kind of disagree with what they said about Gundam Wing but I kind of understand why they said it since Wing does have its flaws.

War in the Pocket was [tornado fang]ing awesome, and it really felt more down to earth than the others.

The ones I've seen, anyway. I'm curious about Turn A.

Mika's characterization in particular stands out. He's clearly the same archetype as Heero and Setsuna, but it somehow feels less forced. Maybe it's because we catch glimpses of more personality than just stoic.

He actually shows some glimpses of personality and comradery, unlike those two.

I definitely disagree about ZZ Gundam. That is infinitely more watchable than Char's Counterattack.

Everyone gives up too early on ZZ, the second half is pretty good. I can easily see why most don't like the first half though. It's probably best viewed right after the end of Zeta actually, since it lightens up the mood after the far more somber end of Zeta.

Which ones did you see? Just so I can get a good idea of what to recommend. If you liked War in the Pocket though, I'd give 08th MS Team a go.

Turn A... well, I enjoy it, but it's a little all over the place sometimes in the writing department.

Do keep in mind that I'm a big advocate of the UC timeline, I like most of it (yes, including Char's Counterattack, although it's admittedly more for the smooth fight animation and music). UC series are generally more down to earth than most of the AU series.

The fights are good in Char's Counterattack, but it just completely ruins the character arcs Char built throughout 0079 & Zeta.

08th MS Team is still my personal favorite. Such a fantastic series.

The fights are good in Char's Counterattack, but it just completely ruins the character arcs Char built throughout 0079 & Zeta.

I respectfully disagree, char was a sociopath with his ideals so deep in his crazy father's ideology that his Gihren like behavior in CCA was completely in character in my opinion. His development even in Zeta still felt like he was just using everyone even his closest allies despite his attempts try and show empathy (In the end he still failed to understand anything about human emotion). I would argue he never really changed from the original series at all-sure his political power grew but his lack of empathy and understanding of humanity as a whole was perfectly summed up in CCA by his actions. He had become the monster he claimed to be fighting against.

The Origin has only focused on that dark side of him even more than before, at least the manga did-I've yet to see the first part of the OVA.

This is where I disagree. It never felt like he was using anyone at all in Zeta, but that after his bazooka shot to the skull in 0079, he had moved on. He was fighting for his comrades, his friends, and attempting to be a voice of reason towards healing the Earth. I feel that CCA just flushed all of that down the toilet and went back to the classic "drop a [insert big thing here] onto the Earth" strategy.
Title: Re: Gundam
Post by: Blue Valkyrie on October 27, 2015, 05:57:44 AM
I don't know about that-Char has only shown empathy to two people in the whole series, Lalah and his sister. The former was a traumatized child prostitute who he manipulated to be a super weapon and sent her to her death. I have a hard time believing that after a whole series of manipulation and backstabbing that char is even capable of moving on. Char was fighting on the right side, but I'd imagine it was nothing more than a stepping stone to forcing humanity off the earth in the long run. With his characterization in mind everything he did just felt so sinister to me in Zeta, it didn't help that his reactions to everything was so cold and emotionless; the guy barely reacted to the death's of his comrades half the time-and despite sharing a similar loss to Kamille could barely bother to show the poor kid any empathy at all. Or at least thats how it came off to me.

I guess it's the sign of a well written character when two fans can have such different views on his actions, I mean despite my opinions I still consider Char one of my favorite characters just because of all his damning character flaws.

Oh, then you'll probably at least like Zeta. 0079 shows its age a lot, but I love it for that 8D You can probably keep it to the movie compilations for 0079, although characterization is lost in the process.

As for CCA... honestly, rewatching stuff in order has made me appreciate it a bit more. A lot of the scenes in Zeta show Char progressively turning more like his father, and I'd argue that him finally taking the front stage for the speech later on in the series is a step towards CCA Char, particularly with the subject matter of his speech. The final confrontation between the characters near the end also shows a lot of it.

Teaser Website: http://gundam-tb.net/ (http://gundam-tb.net/)

Quote
Story Synopsis:

Universal Century 0079. Federation troops and Zeon forces carry out a fierce battle in the "Thunderbolt Sector" in what was once Side 4 "Mua". The "Thunderbolt Sector" is a shoal zone composed of the debris of destroyed space colonies, named for the electrical discharges from the metal debris. MS pilot Io Flemming is among the Federation soldiers who are dispatched to the area, where Zeon sniper Daryl Lorenz awaits them on the battlefield.

Nothing much else is known, whether it's a full anime series, or a set of OVAs, or movies. However, seeing all the clunky Mobile Suits being animated will be VERY awesome.

Like the Psycho Zaku.

Considering the length of the Manga, there should be just about enough material for 25-ish episodes. Then again, I haven't read it so I don't know what the pacing is like there.

... This just brings up my hopes for a Crossbone adaptation. One can hope!

[Info via AnimeNewsNetwork (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-02-20/gundam-uc-anime-gets-tv-broadcast-with-new-opening-ending-themes/.98914)]
The official Gundam.info portal site announced on Sunday that the Mobile Suit Gundam UC video anime series is getting a television broadcast run in Japan under the new title Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 starting on April 3. The series will air on Sundays at 7:00 a.m. on TV Asahi and its affiliated networks.

The anime is being reedited for the television version, and it will also feature a new opening and ending theme with new animated footage.  Tielle is performing the opening theme song "Into The Sky" and Sawano Hiroyuki will perform the ending theme song "Next 2U -eUC-".

Additionally, Shuuichi Ikeda will narrate the next episode preview footage each week as his character Full Frontal. The broadcasts will also have an optional on-screen data stream component. Viewers can use the data to play games online and win presents.

The series music composer, Hiroyuki Sawano, revealed on his website the series will air for 2 quarter of the year (6 months).

I'm expecting remolds of existing Gundam Unicorn gunpla units with "newer" colours, like they are about to do for Gundam Thunderbolt gunpla kits.

I'm loving the attention Thunderbolt is getting, it truly deserves it. Impressively, Iron-Blooded Orphans is still keeping pace too! It's a good time to be a Gundam fan.

Gundam the Origin is getting 2 more episodes, ep5 in Fall 2017, and ep6 in 2018. Both episodes will be covering the Battle of Loum and the eventual birth of the Red Comet.

It's nice to see a Mobile Armor that is actually as dangerous as they are supposed to be.

Just wanna say that the fight between Barbatos and the Mobile Armor was one of the best Mobile Suit fights I've ever seen.

Yeah, it was pretty awesome. I also like that they're pulling through with the consequences and not dropping them.

Man... just finished binge-watching the last few episodes of IBO (haven't had the time lately). Talk about a bittersweet ending, although it couldn't really have gone any other way honestly.

Yeah. It really was a pretty honest ending. I really enjoyed it.

Also finished IBO, had it's ups and downs but overall It was one of the better non UC series to come out, also very ballsy ending-very much respect that.
