Title: They wants to pass YET ANOTHER Anti piracy bill.
Post by: Flame on October 25, 2010, 09:09:15 AM
Excpt this one is a bit more [tornado fang]'d up.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-segal/stop-the-internet-blackli_b_739836.html

And heres a petition

http://demandprogress.org/blacklist/

So yeah. Discuss?

I honestly dont know why they bother with ridiculous [parasitic bomb] like this when its useless to try to stop people from pirating.
I mean, Jesus Christ, not only is it senseless and useless, but censoring the internet? really? (http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac71/Flame-G102/post%20stuff/Kobun.png)

Well that sucks...

It's rather simple to sign the petition, so why not? I went for it.

Yet again? Haven't they learned by now that they can't stop piracy today? They had all the time to quell these activities a long time ago, but failed to influince predjudice against pirates which made piracy a common sight today (and roms, roms EVERYWHERE, but that's a good thing that came out of piracy). >.>

Sadly, this will affect more than piracy. It's an internet blacklist for Pete's sake.

Not quite. The company/publisher/creator/whatever still loses a lot of money from sales that COULD have been made, and if someone is selling the product themselves, that money goes directly to them. You'd be very upset too if you spent a lot of time and money and got a lot less actual profit back or even if someone stole your work and profitted from it. You'd have fans, sure, if it was popular. But you'd be discouraged from making more material if you knew it was going to be seen for free.

Also,it does make a copy of it, but sometimes the quality is not as great as the original.

Post by: Align on October 27, 2010, 01:00:19 PM
Of course, most pirates wouldn't buy it in the first place even if it wasn't possible to pirate, so it's not so much a matter of sales as pride.

...[tornado fang]ing Internet Censorship.

I can only hope that, should the petition fail, dedicated hackers will find a way to annihilate the system they use for that.

Come on, guys-who-think-this-[parasitic bomb]-is-a-good-idea. It's not, and it's futile.

I received an e-mail from the petition site.
Quote
Thanks to your help, we got the Internet blacklist bill tabled until after the election. But now the big guys are fighting back: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce just sent a letter demanding the Senate pass the bill as soon as they come back in November.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is one of the most powerful groups in Washington -- you may have heard about the $75 million they're spending this year to get their favorite politicians elected. That's on top of hundreds of millions they've already spent on lobbyists. If they're going to take us on, we need to fight back.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce draws support from local businesses all across the country who join through local chambers of commerce. Many of these locals have no idea about the extreme agenda their money is supporting. So we're letting them know -- and pressuring them to quit today.

There's another petition to sign but it's the same quick-and-easy form to fill out, so it's hardly a hassle.

A black list is not the answer by far. It will only serve to [acid burst] everyone off.

We do not live in red China, or in some third world islam country. This is the [tornado fang]ing United States of America. Land of the FREE, incase you have not notice there SENATE.

Sometimes I wonder why our politicians want to turn this great country into the soviet union or some ass backwards muslim dust ball.

So, it looks like this bill has been shot down by a senator from Oregon, who has vowed to do everything in his power to keep it from getting through the senate.

Glad to see there are still some people with half a brain in the government.

How uncharacteristically self-righteous of you. But honestly, it isn't a good thing. It just is.

Sadly, I don't have money to buy every little game, but I do often test games first via said methods, THEN turn around and buy them. No point in wasting money on [parasitic bomb] after all.

With Flame on this one, O-Man. This land isn't very... free. America is pretty shitty honestly. Also, not everything about Muslims is bad, so that sounded particularly off color. And I really don't approve. But aside from how I COULD pick apart your post, I'll just note that Americans needs to get a little less high and mighty about their craptacular.

I was actually following this from another site before I knew there was a thread here.  -_- This irritates me to no end. I know piracy is bad, blah. But I mostly buy used games anyway. Does the producer see any money in that? Pretty sure just Gamestop gets the money for hooking me up with the copy. And blacklisting THE best way to get information (I know it isn't always accurate but it is information still) is a terrible idea.

Who says what is okay for me to look at and not look at? Who decides that for me? What about my rights? So some pirating makes it okay for the government to decide what I can and can't look at? I mean, I'm for moderation in government and this is just bigger government.

But eh, I know I can only do so much, but I signed the petition. I'll be the first to admit that we have very little control over the government generally, but lots of press and lots of pissed off voters DOES make those politicians a little nervous. They do want their comfy jobs after all. We have to out weigh the support from the people pushing the bill with negative press to even hope to do anything.

Anyway got this email from the people:

[spoiler]Kayla -- big news! Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to send the Internet blacklist bill to the full Senate, but it was quickly stopped by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) who denounced it as "a bunker-buster cluster bomb" aimed at the Internet and pledged to "do everything I can to take the necessary steps to stop it from passing the U.S. Senate."

Wyden's opposition practically guarantees the bill is dead this year -- and next year the new Congress will have to reintroduce the bill and start all over again. But even that might not happen: Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Hollywood's own senator, told the committee that even she was uncomfortable with the Internet censorship portion of the bill and hoped it could be removed when they took it up again next year!

This is incredible -- and all thanks to you. Just a month ago, the Senate was planning to pass this bill unanimously; now even the senator from Hollywood is backing away from it. But this fight is far from over -- next year, there's going to be hearings, negotiations, and even more crucial votes. We need to be there, continuing to fight.

We're doing everything we can: working with key staffers to remove the most egregious parts of the bill, lobbying more members of Congress to speak out against this bill, and insisting on hearings so the whole Senate can learn about how dangerous this is. And, of course, we'll keep working with you to make sure more people hear about this bill and tell their senators.[/spoiler]

Next thing to worry about are those new scanners in airports giving us cancer. -u-'

Haha, by that definition. Buying used games might as well be piracy. 8D

Or worse than, really. Since someone is getting paid while the producers are getting... nothing.

But I won't go there. That's a whole 'nother touchy subject. And frankly, I said I won't bother debating stuff on RPM anymore.

Hm... Someone buys the game, producer gets money.

They sell it back to Gamestop.

I buy it, Gamestop gets the money. Sure there isn't another 'copy' but another player is playing the game without paying those who made it?

Hm I never thought about that before. If I am right and GS keeps the money, then only buying "new" games is "supporting the company who made it"?

Of course if someone knows that GS or other respective game shops gives some of the money to those who make the game when someone buys it used, feel free to correct me, since I'm not claiming to know how they work. I am just musing.

Well. Before I sign off on this topic, I will state that I heard it during the Fallout 3 Midnight sale from a Gamestop Manager.

That, doubled with a comment from Game Overthinker himself, I'm pretty sure this is an accurate notion.

Anyway, yeah... Just remember gaiz, everyone's [parasitic bomb] stinks. Piracy, Gamestop, Gamers, Programmers, Producers. Etc. All of it.

Don't get high and mighty, basically. Your [parasitic bomb] stinks too, no matter how good you think you are.

Sometimes I wonder why our politicians want to turn this great country into the soviet union or some ass backwards muslim dust ball.
Because those in power will always want more.  And the easiest way to gain it is to panic/anger the masses and then promise them you'll take care of it.

Hm... Someone buys the game, producer gets money.

They sell it back to Gamestop.

I buy it, Gamestop gets the money. Sure there isn't another 'copy' but another player is playing the game without paying those who made it?
I hate that propaganda, because nobody thinks about what a "trade-in" is.

You don't get cash at GameStop.  Trade-ins go TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF ANOTHER GAME.

That's what nobody talks about.  Developers get their money not from the sale of used games, but the supply of them.  Kill that, and you're effectively increasing the price of new releases to such gamers, meaning their number of purchases will fall.  Counter-productive, don't you think?

Now true, there is no guarantee that the new game and the traded in game are of the same developer/publisher.  So, in these times of economic crisis and skyrocketing development costs, the devs/publishers panic, and they rally against their scapegoat to quench their thirst for control.  But they're being selfish, looking only to their own company and not to the business as a whole.
Title: Re: They wants to pass YET ANOTHER Anti piracy bill.
Post by: Nicole Claris on December 03, 2010, 02:30:40 AM
Uh not always. You can get cash. I have often. So don't know where you get the idea you can't. Or maybe they have changed it recently. I still could get cash, not a lot mind you, but I could get cash.

Also I never said that you didn't trade in for another game. I don't personally trade in. I was making the point that I buy used.

Also, if I get, say, the new Halo. I sell it back or even trade it in to get a used Harvest Moon game, there is still not another copy of either game involved. There is still a new game sitting on the shelf and not sold. Then Ares buys the Halo game I sold. Again, not a new Halo, not a new copy, and the same game gets pushed around.

See my point? It doesn't help the new games prosper.

And hell it's not like people are going to stop buying used games. I will still if there isn't a new copy. My point it that the NEW copy is effectively helping more than the used to encourage the game to make sequels/prequels whatever.
