Title: Why, Back In MY Day...
Post by: geekgo4 on August 19, 2010, 06:25:16 AM
I think we all had these moments once in a while. When people use phones to actually speak to them. When people got up to change the channel, When people have to settle for dirt for dinner.

This is not supposed to be a bash on the new generation. It's just... well... did you ever had these moments.

It seems that the new generation of young gamers(less than 14) are more interested in mature games, wrestling games, and hip, trendy stuff. When I show them a gameplay of KOFXI for PS2, they looked at it in disgust and called if fakey and didn't like the sprites.

Is it me or do kids of this generation show no respect of classic gaming?

Lol, I say "Back in my day" all the time. Its a bad habit. My friend gets angry at me because were the same age and I talk and act as if I were like 80 years old. XD

Also, it depends on the person i guess. Some respect it, others are too busy with their Halo and Gears of War and space marines to care. And anything else is crap to them. :B

Well, back in the day Controllers only had 6 Buttons and games were usually more simple (If more Vague, due to programming).

Doesn't mean I can't adapt. I'm not like my parents who stopped playing fun games in '94 to start playing those Casual games.

Nowadays we get a few little trials to make you pay to play the full game.

Why back in MY day the only way to know about a game was EGM or Nintendo Power. I think some other magazine, but it sucked.
And nickles had bumblebees on them, give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say. So anyways, I was walking along with an onion on my belt-which was the style back then...

In my day we didn't have a [tornado fang]ing recession. Sure, we had our problems, but we just ignored them and focused on eating bruschetta and foie gras for lunch. They were simpler times, which I was nonetheless too young and middle-class to appreciate.

There was also Mega Drive, N64 and the old Sonic cartoon, though, which were awesome.

Back in my day, my friends and I knew this guy called JC. Pretty cool guy, had a lot of neat stuff to say. We weren't really friends with him, we just hung out with him, but he didn't mind. We all thought he was really mysterious and cool, so we would always follow him around the place and listen to him talk. Then one day he started acting stranger than usual. We got really worried about him, but he just invited us over for dinner a little later and told us it was all cool, he was going somewhere better. Last I heard of him he got arrested. Don't know what for, but I didn't see him again. I heard some people telling us they saw him around the place, but I reckon they were just smoking something weird. He never gave us anything back when we tried sending messages to him. I still hear people talking about him and all the crazy stuff he used to tell us. Poor guy. He was awesome.

Back in my day, pirating copying movies was a day-long, special operation.
VCR -> TV -> VCR, everything carefully put together (short cables) and immobilized with heavy things. Then you press PLAY on the first remote, and PLAY & RECORD on the second one at the very same time, and go out of the room, so one of VCRs won't eat your precious tape. 2 hours later you're done, and you can try with the next movie.

I cannot [tornado fang]ing stand how every movie has to be in 3D nowadays. And most of them are just as bad as they were in the 80's, serving no point but to show off 3D, and when transferred to Home Video loses any bit of charm it had. (i.e., Jaws 3(D), Avatar, etc.) That Alpha and Omega one looks like [parasitic bomb] too, its a [tornado fang]ing furfest.

Back in my day you could find movies on TV without turning it off due to commercials every 10 Minutes.

This 3D moviefest is a good thing, see? You can pretty much go "Hey, every single non-animated movie that's in 3D pretty much has a BIG chance to be total [parasitic bomb]", and not go watch them in the first place.

Back in my day, schools taught grammar all the way into the highschool years.  We learned how to properly construct sentences, how to use punctuation, and what proper nouns are.  Nowadays, schools don't teach grammar.  And it shows in the poorly-structured sentences filled with random capitalizations, misused commas and apostrophes, and the lack of spaces after punctuation.  Seriously pathetic.  This is an age of utter idiocy.

Back then, when I needed info on a game or cartoon character, I usually wound up in a fansite with "facts" about the character. There was no Wiki back then (at least, that I know of at the time).

And on top of that, game systems were barely fragile like the wimpy DS Lite is. It may be sturdy, yes, but it actually has some weakspots. There were some reports of it's contents would melt on contact with fire, too.

Along with that, we had to use our imagination to develop our tall tales, with the occasion of twisting other's reports to make a better story.

That's also the time when we had no computers and had to guess what the dinosaurs looked like with our brains and had to guess where each bone went and what time period was it from.

Hell, I had trouble with SA1 on my dreamcast on my first run! Now I can beat the game without a problem. I think that's the problem with games today, they are just almost too linear to my tastes. :\

There are a few "nightmare difficulty" games that I can name too. Insector X was one of 'em.. or I sucked back then, I might need to replay it now that I know of an exploitable weakness in the second stage's boss.

Meh. He had an excuse in season 1 because he was just starting out. It's been over 10 years, close to 20 now, and he STILL has made little to no progress in the intelligence department.

Back in my day... Teachers were supposed to know how to properly spell the words on the spelling test.

Once again, Mt. Holly Springs Elementary has disappointed me.  My niece's teacher marked her correct spelling of "slimy" wrong, saying it was spelled "slimey."  I convinced my sister-in-law to send a note to the teacher, proving her wrong and asking her to correct this oversight.  If this was done with my niece's spelling test, it no doubt happened to other students' tests.

What the hell happened?  In my day, teachers were supposed to teach the students.  Now all it is is teaching to the test.  The damn PSSA tests rule the education system and no one actually learns anything.  It's memorization of niggly things in order to pass a damn test.

That. So much that. The GBA was literally the pinnacle of mobile gaming.

Back in my day a cathode-ray TV that was over 15 inches was SUPER BIG SCREEN BEST PICTURE QUALITY TV YAY

Back in my day, Cartoon Network was worth it.
And appealed to all ages and demographics with out having to rely on crap you can find on the Internet to find what people like.  I swear it really shifted from that to the main demographic being adolescent boys except for Adventure Time.  Where is the stuff for girls and witty people and following the adventures of a stereotype like Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Lab?

Because people whined about this same stuff back in freaking 2006.

That was because of the fact that they had a lot of live action shows and wasn't "Cartoon Network".  Now it's because it's full of "crap".

I don't know what Cartoon Network you're referring to, but I'm talking about the golden age of the channel, with shows like Dexter's Lab, Courage, PPG, etc. No one complained about those.

What you're talking about is basically modern CN.

Back in my day, you didn't have to worry about what your kids would find online, as it wasn't as easy for them to access and a single search would take longer than their attention span.

My nephew discovered Google Image Search.  He plunks in terms like "world's biggest [fill in the blank]."

Yeah. :|

It depends on what the search is and his age. World's biggest hotdog? Boobs?

How did they get an oven that can make it that big, though the hotdog itself kind of looks uncooked.

Oh those wacky Japanese and their hotudogu.

I have a feeling it tastes terrible though.

Actually looking at the picture closer I notice it's multiple pieces of bread instead of one connected piece of bread, that makes more sense.

Oh there's no denying that, then again I imagine hotdogs are kind of big in japan since, for a time, the champion of I think the international hotdog eating contest was Japanese.

It does, although they train their stomachs to handle that kind of intake, as well as their bodies to discard the "wall" and keep pushing through.

Heh, I kind of find it sickening.

Of course it's sickening.

I remember the way they gagged out some of the hotdogs and stuffed it back in their mouth, in order to keep their hotdog count.
