*Hostile mod takeover coming soon in light of new news*
I'm sure anyone that watches Avatar: The Last Airbender, knows there is a live action film being made by M. Night Shyamalan (don't know if I spelled that right), well, they've released a preview of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvLUrF3ItGQ). I personally don't know what to make of it, I'm not a huge fan of the series (I don't dislike it though) so I'll leave it up to all of you to decide of course. Feel free to lock this if someone else has posted it.
-
This is news to me...
Anyways, it... Looks fine for now.
-
i died
-
I saw that when I went to see Transformers. I don't think I'll go see it; I already saw the Nick series, and have you seen Aang's tatoo on the big screen? In the cartoon it was like paint, but now it looks like a real tatoo. Its not a normal tatoo, its like a satan worshipper tatoo. Which creeps me out.
-
I can't watch the trailer due to my laptop's shittasticness, so for anyone who liked Avatar and saw it, how bad was it really?

ITS GOOD

It's... Unique. XD

I actually paused at that part, and it looked like hair that was cut to fit the tattoo... >0<

in b4 LOL OPENING DAY
-
I like the Anime/Cartoon. Hopefully the movie adaptation too.
Still waiting for Book 3 Fire in my local TV.
-
It certainly caught my attention when it was shown on Entertainment Tonight the other day. I'm interested in it, and hoping that M. Night Shamaylan does a good job, but like so many cartoons-turned-movies in the past, I'm also not holding my breath.
-
I saw it tonight. It actually looked pretty decent.
-
Only thing I can say is that i'm glad they followed the fans' anger on changing the actors from Caucasion to actors outside of NA.
If anything, if M.Night has passion on this movie, then the actors will do a good job. Hopefully.
-
A live action movie based on an animated TV series is so far looking like it might actually be an accurate representation of the source material?
Holy [parasitic bomb]. I've got to see this now. I'm not even a fan of the TV series.
-
I will only say this:
NOT HAPPY WITH ACTORS.
-
I'll give it a chance... looks like it's in better hands than Transformers is. The casting isn't perfect, but I'll reserve my judgement for when it comes out.
-
Oh god... (http://www.movietome.com/infocus/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=789274)
-
Please...
Kill me.
-
BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA....ok where are the real actors?
-
...alas...there is always an annoying seed in the sweet, juicy fruits we eat.... ;O;
-
Hmm... Despite the colour...
They look fine... Aang still scares me though... Smile a bit!
-
Looks great so far!
I see many adaptations of animes/ games lately XD Let's hope There'll be one for Rockman X (or not, spandex Brrr XD)
-
I liked the cartoon and all.
But even so, I MIGHT not watch this. If I do, it would probably be just to critisize it like me and most of my familiy do when we rent a bad movie.
-
i was stunned to see Shyamalan directing this movie its not his style imo he does thriller drama type like Sixth Sense ooh that scared me first time i saw it and a great one i liked was Signs, we'll see how this fares (is that right "fares"?)
-

Ooh, did you like Speed Racer too?
-
I thought the trailer looked promising somewhat. But Ive never watched Avatar itself.
BTW,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvLUrF3ItGQ
the video you linked to isnt there anymore Irgendein
-
The actor who plays Aang is very odd looking, probably wont see it ever until they show it on TV.
-
How do they not make Aang Chinese when he has a Chinese name?
Anyway, I've looked this up previously and if I remember right, this is going to be a trilogy. I'm guessing a movie for Water, Earth, and Fire.
-
Oh yeah, kinda forgot about this thread.

Looks fine to me. Don't see why everyone's complaining about the actors.
-
Nice trailer.
Never knew the tattoo was that detailed. XD
-
The only thing that annoys me with the trailers so far is that they seem to make Aang look too serious. Aang can be serious when he needs to be, but it really isn't in him to be like that all the time. He likes goofing off more than anything else.
-

I noticed that too, I hope it´s only the trailers fault and it is not the case in the movie...
-
Well, it just so happens that the trailer puts all the battles and stuff in, so it kinda explains Aang's seriousness.
But yeah, we'll just have to wait for more.
-
So, I heard that this movie sucks. Can anybody verify?
-
So, I heard that this movie sucks. Can anybody verify?
I was there, I watched it, and it was pretty good. Though, there are a couple issues with it.
-The names are pronounced as if they were Japanese names
-Zuko's scar isn't very pronounce
Other things I can point out include:
-several characters were cut out (King Bumi and the Kyoshi Warriors)
-If you haven't seen the TV series, you'd be a little confused
-If you are anal about details or dislike the TV series, you will DESPISE this movie
So yeah, if you are gonna see it, ignore any reviews you've seen or read and go in with an open mind.
-
So far everyone who I've talked to who loves the series and has seen this 100% hate it. Honestly, so far you're the only person I know who likes it.
-
Now where did I put that quote from the movie...
-
Funny how this movie fails in both ways.
- Fails as an actual movie for having possibly the worst acting of all time, events that are incomprehensibly linked to one another, transitions which you don't know how the hell they happened, and fiction which doesn't make any sense except for the fans of the show, who don't need to know the story in the first place.
- Fails as an adaptation for hardcore fans. Many hardcore fans tend to not give a crap if a movie's good or not, they look at the small details and compare them to the show to see how they stand. Sapphire Knight, for example, didn't make any complaint about the MOVIE itself, just how faithful it was to the show. For any moviegoer who isn't a fan looking for details, this is probably the biggest pile of [parasitic bomb] they've ever gone to.
The fact that they mention the spirit world, which is pretty much a throwaway plot point which could pretty much be replaced at anytime by some other magic bullshit, and disregard the entire war, which is the main point of the story itself, in the intro, shows how well the adaptation was made.
-
Amusingly, my brother hasn't seen the tv series and he found the plot to be really simple and is blabbergasped why others have a hard time getting it. Oh and his enjoyment to Golden Sun helped (again, amusingly) understand it.
Lol.
I personally didn't mind the movie and liked it for mainly the scenery and costume work. Like my brother, I found the story to be rather simple to follow, the problem w/ the movie to me is two main things: pacing is a bit too quick and lack of fighting (considering from the....3 episodes I saw from the series, i'm rather shocked at practically little to none fight scenes, despite the fact it's based on a series of martial arts and elemental control). Pacing well...affected the whole move like a domino effect, acting is good (I noticed enthusiasm on mainly the main characters, but pacing killed it), scenery is good and adventure is good (but pacing killed it). Pacing to me added an odd effect to the whole movie, making it worse.
For once, this movie would probably have been slightly saved to be at least above average by being longer. Which then would help space out the story, rather than throwing down summarized chunks at you and let the audience get a better build up and alas, FIGHT SCENES, proper and faster ones.
That's about it, I hope I typed comprehensive enough ^^'
-
When I have time, I'll post some gifs I took of a few great fighting moments in the series itself.
...seeing as all the [tornado fang]ing videos on youtube are shitty AMVs. >_> Dammit, fans...

Gifs are always good! ^^b

Easily one of the best episodes in the series. Not to mention a damn creepy one at that.
especially the beginning

Again, as I said, movie will cloud judgements. ALOT.
-
I just found out my brother download the whole series XD.
I guess the movie can also be a bridge for those curious enough XD
-
I laughed at this movie for all the wrong reasons. As a fan of the show, this falls into my it's so bad it's good territory.
-
I guess the movie can also be a bridge for those curious enough XD
If anything, the movie would make me stay the hell away from the show. >_>;;;
-
it varies from person to person.
my brother got curious, but then again, I wouldn't know.
I think soo differently from others that I slap myself thinking why I get so alienated lol.
but anyways, I look forward to watching the series~
-
Imagine the series as an anime. Only it's a GOOD anime, with researched cultural details, martial arts which are actual realistic styles, and dialogue which is witty, funny, and serious at times, in a fantastic plot with quite alot of development.
-
I did saw 3 random episodes before lol.
-
This entire thread reminds me that there was never an official "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series thread here on RPM. I am ashamed of myself. XD
The series goes so far beyond the usual Nickelodeon type of cartoon and blends the best of animation & storytelling together to create one hell of a wild ride through a meticulously created world. It is seriously my top pick for best animated series of the 2000 - 2010 decade.

Not gonna give my opinion on that one until that damn JJ Abrahms-made finale movie comes true. >_> GET ON IT, PEOPLE. I really want to see the grand finale.
-
Expected mediocre movie, got a mediocre movie. Can't say I am disappointed when it was exactly how I expected it.
Honestly, I feel that its biggest problem is that it has a really really bad pacing, it's too [tornado fang]ing rushed at the beginning. Because of that I feel that you don't even get to know the characters well, I have no idea how someone that hasn't watched the show could've cared about any of the characters except maybe Aang. I don't really like how they replaced Aang's previous reincarnation as a mentor with a dragon either unless I just don't remember it from the show.
Also, bending looked quite silly at times. Oh, and couldn't fire benders create their own fireballs in the show? I could swear I saw them do that in like every episode.

1 - Earthbenders, in the show, are trapped in a mining ship completely made out of metal, so they can't bend. It's through the group's plan to get all the coal of the ship into the prison yard that they succeed.
- Earthbenders, in the movie, are trapped in a mountain. WITH ROCKS ALL AROUND THEM. EARTH ALL AROUND THEM. AND THEY NEVER TRIED TO ESCAPE UNTIL... ONG POINTED THIS OUT TO THEM.
2 - Firebenders, in the show, can shoot fire without requiring it nearby. It's why they won the war. They're just naturally more powerful.
- In the movie, they need a fire source. Think that's stupid? How about THE FACT THAT NOBODY EVER THINKS TO PUT OUT THE DAMN FIRE SOURCE. ...Ong could throw a little gust on it and put it out. Or any Earthbender could just throw some dust on the flames. No more fire.
3 - Talking dragons in live action movies haven't been fun since Sean Connery in Dragonheart.
-
3 - Talking dragons in live action movies haven't been fun since Sean Connery in Dragonheart.
Not even Sir Sean could save that clusterfuck of a movie.
-
1-Funnily, that's the last episode I rewatched (I really need to finish seasons 2 and 3 though, why must every good tv show have such an inconvenient timeslot in Mexico? Seriously). It's a wonder the fire nation won any battle at all in the movie universe when they make such [tornado fang]ing stupid mistakes.
2-Well, at least the water people said to do that, why they never bothered to is anyone's guess...though I guess it shows why the fire nation is winning the war, the other nations are even stupider.
3-Can't argue with that, though it's because I haven't watched many movies with a talking dragon.
-
Not even Sir Sean could save that clusterfuck of a movie.

Last Action Hero is garbage? O_o I always thought it was pretty much Schwarzenegger's best movie. Plus, it's a dear movie to all the movie critics I know personally. I actually never found ANYONE who disliked the movie. No bad reputation or anything.

It all sounds amazing thus far, and as these things get more and more buzz, I'll try and keep them here in this thread.

Aparently, the technology and culture will have evolved, and she'll be able to contact Aang in the Spirit World. (all rumors so far)

Thanks to the rerun they've been showing on Nicktoons (with developer comments, I love those) I've been catching up what I missed when it aired in Mexico. Oh man, Appa's Lost Days made me so sad ;__;
I found it weird that they never explained what happened to his mother.
I think they left it out purposedly. To leave either an open ending easy enough for us to understand that he finally had control of his life and his family, and for there to be a fourth book if anyone wanted to close up anything.

I should have made a note about this too, but at the time I was getting my info from a particularly older thread on another forum and I wanted to kinda do some digging for recent news on these developments. Still for all though, with a setup like this and the Avatar world itself, I can't help but get a little excited.
- Who will play the roles as the new Order of The White Lotus?
- With a new waterbending avatar, the order of learning bending styles changes yet again. Who will be teaching her airbending? (I.E. Will there be more airbending descendants? *Looks over at Aang & Katara* 8D)
- What effect will Aang's actions have on the world in retrospect? (As much as ousting Firelord Ozai was the goal & major changing pace in the tide of the Fire Nation War, you can tell that this action might have made some fire nation members sway in terms of beliefs. This could be the set up fr a lot of political or military like unrest.)
- Will we ever find out what happened to Zuko's mother explicitly or will it be hinted at?
- DOES TOPH STAY AWESOME THROUGH HER LIFETIME? (Probably yes. XD)
Nickelodeon has just greenlit a new animated series from Avatar: the Last Airbender creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. According to the network's president, Brown Johnson, the series-- currently titled The Legend of Korra-- will be expanding the mythology of the Avatar franchise, setting it roughly 70 years after the original show's events with a whole new cast of characters.
"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," Johnson said. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."
The Legend of Korra follows the adventures of a "passionate, rebellious and fearless" teenager from the Southern Water Tribe, a girl named Korra. Having already mastered three of the four elements (Earth, Water, and Fire), she seeks to master the final element of Air. Her travels eventually lead her to the metropolis of Republic City, an epicenter for the modern Avatar world. Although a thriving society of benders and non-benders alike, Republic City is also ridden with crime, including an anti-bending rebellion that is gaining momentum. Under the guidance of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training as she confronts the dangers ahead of her.
The Legend of Korra will be produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios and is expected to begin airing sometime in 2011.

Well, somewhat. There might be more revealed at this years comic-con hopefully.
A fansite has opened (http://legendofkorra.com/) and we got a couple looks at our protagonist, Korra (http://legendofkorra.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/korra.jpg) as well as a seemingly "Appa-equivalent" polar bear-dog (http://legendofkorra.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/sdcc-poster-korra.jpg). And our last image (http://legendofkorra.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/korra-poster.jpg) show Korra and the gang. All of which can be viewed on the fansite.
Finally, an interview (http://legendofkorra.com/?p=74).

Ooerr.

Actually I'm worried that'll make her uninteresting...
From a mentality standpoint, she can still be really inexperienced. The creaters of the show said that she is hotheaded and rebellious, which could interfere with her fighting (as it did Zuko). I'm sure there will be a lot of character development for her, they wouldn't make her a masterful fighter from the getgo. She still has to learn different techniques from Tenzin.
EDIT:
-City is now called "United Republic", founded by Aang and Zuko
-Korra's Krew is the new Aang gaang
-Brothers in her Krew, One is a firebender, one is an earthbender
-Fire is Mako, Earth is Bolin
-Mako is the brooding...not as amuch as Zuko, Bolin is the younger, goofier brother. Kind of naive.
-Bolin is a way of incorp the original type of character they wanted for Toph
-Bear is titled Naga...and is female
-Paboo, the red panda black footed ferret.
-Paboo will be Bolins buddy, and is known as a fire ferret in the series
-Aang finds a heard of sky bison after the war
-new species of flying lemur
-Kataang has 3 Kids, youngest is an airbender named Tenzin
-Tenzin has a family, and three kids
-Meelo is Tenzins little boy
-Tenzin is very serious, but when his kids are crazy, he can be really funny, tries to be the "zen master" but loses his patience sometimes
-Pema is Tenzin's wife

I wish they would have picked a better narrator, and actual intense scenes. They're advertising this like some cliche childrens show, when it's much more complex than that. They got it right with the first trailer.
-
Well it's kind of both, y'know? Kids can watch and enjoy it without getting anything but the surface, us elders can see a bit more than that. Think of it as one trailer for each section of the intended audience.

Seems like it'll premiere on April 14th. :D
But wait...
If you go here (http://www.korranation.com/) and share the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/legendofkorra) to get it to 100,000 likes... we'll get the premiere early! :D
-
We've reached the goal. Nick says to head here (http://www.korranation.com/) on the 24th for the episode.
-
Okay, anyone got mirrors? I hate streaming, especially when there are ads all around.
-
I downloaded it myself, so I could watch it on my TV with my friends.
-
Finally got around to watching it, pretty great.
-
Anyone still watching this?
-
Yes. Korra's pretty awesome. Can't wait for tomorrow's episode; from the sounds of it it'll be a good one. :3
-
And it was a good one
-
a phenomenal one
i mean, it was frickin' amazing :3

Only 6 episodes in and there's already so many theories and speculations thrown about. Who bribed the referees? How can Amon take away bending? Has Korra unlocked any chakras? This is shaping up to be a pretty crazy season. I think there will be only 24 episodes, I hope the pacing doesn't ruin the series.
-
Well there's been two books confirmed so far, but unlike A:TLA each is a self-contained arc. So we'll finish the Equalists plotline by the end of this season.

Don't forget the flashbacks from Aang's adulthood.
-
Actually, the Equalist arc will only run for 12 episodes, so we're halfway through.
The other 14 episodes that have been ordered are gonna comprise Book 2, which will contain another story arc starring Korra and company.
There are also options for further books if these do well enough.
-
Is it just me, or do the animals seem downplayed in this series? I forget about Naga most of the time, and Pabu doesn't have enough screen time. Appa and Momo were inseparable.

How bout dat Tarlok at episode 8?
-
How bout dat Tarlok at episode 8?
Umm... umm... well I think it's safe to say that he finally showed his true colors. D:
-
Haven't seen it yet.
Cosake you're a Canuck, where'd you watch it? I've just been using the official Nick site which is week or two behind.
Also I immediately concluded Tarlok's true alignment 5 seconds into his first appearance. Don't let me down now.
-
Even after what Tarlock did to Korra, I can't hate him just yet. And the flashbacks are getting even more intense, that one evil looking dude seems to be Tarlock's father or something.
I'm willing to bet that guy had some people hidden in the audience to blood bend everyone there (if you noticed, everyone in the audience seemed to be affected), similar to how Amon trained the equalists to chi-block (I think he trained them?). If not, then he must be hella powerful to use his bending so widespread like that.

Well considering that Tarrlok is able to bloodbend without the power of a full moon, I'm sure that means that Yakone (the man in the flashbacks and possibly Tarrlok's father, as you said) was a powerful bloodbender too. Apparently his name can also be taken to mean "blood spray on the snow" or something, giving an even sinister meaning and bloodbending attachment.

After this episode, I can't believe Tenzin chose Pema over Lin. She's such a [tornado fang]ing badass.
And General Iroh, huh? That's so thoughtful of Zuko. But using his voice actor sounds so horribly out of place for his son.
-
Eh, Lin seems to be more of a loner anyways.
and yeah, it was weird but cool
-
So how 'bout that season finale? Didn't expect that explosion at the end. And I knew Aang was going to speak with Korra, but it was all beautifully paced.
-
Yeah, loved every minute of it.
The Equalists turning on Amon when he was outed as a waterbender seems realistic to me. I mean, he even had just lied to the with the facepaint he called the burns, and that was revealed as a lie too when it washed off. Everything these people did was for their leader, the one they followed because they thought he'd been screwed over by benders... How would you feel if you'd gone through all this and found out that everything you did was for a liar, one who was a bender himself. Seriously, of course they outraged. They just overthrew a regime of benders because of another bender; by all rights, they should have attacked him too.
As for Mako electrocuting Amon, he was furious. He loved Korra and seeing her get her powers removed made him furious. That rage, channeled into sheer force of will (which I still suspect is how Amon resisted Tarrlok's bloodbending, though he had the fact he was a bloodbender too on his side) allowed him to get that spark. We already knew that Mako was a very powerful firebender.
Speaking of which, loved seeing Iroh II fight; that was pretty awesome. Using the fire jets to hover, hijacking two planes and blowing several more up (one with a direct blast to the torpedoes) and then taking the Amon mask off the Aang statue. That was actually rather hilarious.
Also, I was surprised when Tarrlok showed up, and even more surprised by his sacrifice at the end of the episode. He had realized the error of his ways and knew that he alone was able to end Amon once and for all. That was great, even if it did look like something out of a bad mobster movie or something XD
I was quite happy that Korra unlocked Airbending finally, and pleased to see my theory regarding a preview screen for this regarding her airbending was spot-on. I also enjoyed seeing all the past Avatars, and also thought Aang was Tenzin. Figured he was there to comfort her. Apparently what he told her is a deep Buddhist belief or something, which makes sense.
Glad to see Asami confronted her father, and I think that despite how she felt towards Mako and how he was treating her, his apology helped matters somewhat and also the fact that she really has nowhere else to go.
Actually, she could probably return home and take over her father's company (since he'll surely be imprisoned for his crimes), but somehow I don't think that would fit her. Maybe she'll sell it to Cabbage Corp. XD
Also, I TOLD EVERYONE LIN WOULD GET HER BENDING BACK! I KNEW IT! I just had this feeling. Though I had a feeling the Avatar state would come into play, I expected it during the Amon fight, but I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with how it did come into play. Call it a cop-out, but it does make sense. She'd lost her power over the elements, something she'd prided herself on. She was extremely humbled, which allowed her to access the airbending and therefore her more spiritual side.
Oh and it was funny seeing Tenzin's reaction to Bumi being there. Glad to see he retained some of the craziness of his namesake. Speaking of which, I was saddened to see them captured, but Meelo yelling PRISON BREAK!! made it all better. XD
I do feel sorry for the Lieutenant though. Even though he's done so much to stop the Avatar, to see him betrayed as he was and discover that the Avatar wasn't lying, that the man he'd devoted his life to stopping benders because of was he himself a bender... that must be one of the worst feelings in the world.
So yeah, top moments

-Iroh II fighting
-Bumi
-The big reveal of Amon as Noatak to the general populace
-Tarrlok's sacrifice

Also there's this. The comics won't end after The Promise wraps up.

oh btw we're also seeing the first Avatar, Wan.
he's voiced by Steven Yeun, known for his role as Glenn on The Walking Dead.
Wan’s story will take place 10,000 years before Korra’s time, and follow the teenage explorer and skilled bender as he tries to bring balance between mankind and the spirits, a quest that ultimately leads to becoming the first Avatar.
[...]
These episodes will also mark a significant stylistic departure from the usual aesthetics of Legend of Korra. ”To depict the world in Wan’s time, the creative team drew inspiration from ancient and traditional East Asian ink wash paintings and woodblock prints for the environments, color palettes, and stylizations of the elements,” said a Nickelodeon representative. “The results expand the vision of the Avatar world, but also stay very true to the building blocks of its visual influence.”

This... this literally left me speechless.
Also, with some of the artstyle choices, I couldn't help but be reminded of Mononoke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OJW9gZL33Q); albeit a much less trippy and disturbing version of it.
But holy [parasitic bomb], there's so much to speculate on this trailer alone.
Most notably, that avatar (whoever he is) using the four elements simultaneously like Aang did in the final battle. Another thing is Korra conversing with the previous Avatars, one of them being Avatar Kyoshi (I really hope we find out more on her).
I also noticed that the production values look easily on par with movie standards. The animation, effects and music puts a good chunk of modern anime to shame. I hope they don't strain their animation budget too much, or they might have subpar-looking episodes in the future.
The Avatar series is just too damn unique, and every RPMer should start watching it or RANDOM BANNINGS

WHAT

MY BRAIN HURTS!
Okay. Seriously now.
I don't give a crap about Avatar the Last Skirtlifter but I've been interested in Korra to some extend for some time.
But then I heard that the first season was plagued by horrible problems such as the ending sucking and stuff.
Is it true? Should I bother to watch it? Or should I wait and see if at least this new season will be better than the SUPPOSEDLY mediocre first one? Because you know, if I am to suffer a bad first season, I want to at least know if the second will redeem it.
It's kinda like the Justice League S1 and beyond deal.
-
Actually, the ending of Book 1 of Korra makes perfect sense; it only sucks to those who don't pay attention to the actual belief the ending was based off of.
Seriously, I've shown people who thought the ending was some bullshit deus ex machina that belief that explains EVERYTHING, and they ignored it. Guess some people are happier being mad at something instead of understanding it.
-
The main complaint about the ending from most people is that it felt rushed. And it possibly was due to the fact that at the time of making it, they had no clue whether or not there would be a 2nd season.

Because it looks more mature? Plus there's a masked villain, I love me sum masked villains.
Besides, I never said I didn't like Skirtlifter.
I merely said I don't care about it.
I am however familiar with some basics about the characters and such.

Honestly Tron, if you have the chance I'd give the original series a try. It makes Korra that much better (especially in one particular episode). Team Avatar is just hilarious together.

I could try it.
After all this series builds upon lore established in the Last Airbender.

It seems that way, doesn't it? But it's not.
Yeah, The Last Airbender starts out kinda silly, but as the books/seasons go on, the content becomes pretty dark (Blood Bending, as one example). Content I don't think I've ever seen in a Nickelodeon show.

The main complaint about the ending from most people is that it felt rushed. And it possibly was due to the fact that at the time of making it, they had no clue whether or not there would be a 2nd season.
Pretty much this. Amon was the one of the most badass, hyped up villain in recent memory. And Korra wins with...a simple airbending pushkick? I'm not even convinced she should've learned it, I never got the sense that Korra was understanding the philosophy of airbending. I would've been 100% okay if they made Korra overcome the bloodbending with her avatar state like Aang did. But nah, make her win through her usual forceful methods that conveniently work now. Not only that, but I STILL side by Amon's nonbender rebellion (partially of course). Korra didn't do anything to solve the problem of bender vs nonbender inequality, all she did was reveal that their leader was a hypocrite. It was a total rush job that failed to deliver.
Season 2... ugh. I was fine with Korra as the main in Season 1, despite her black-and-white mentality that persists all the time to create needless drama. Season 2 amplifies that to new levels of stupidity, and it's hardly taken off.
-
It wasn't just that Amon was a hypocrite. It was that he was trying to control the city and get rid of the benders so he would be the most powerful. He was following in his father's footsteps. As for Season 2, there's a good chance they go back to the Equalists as well, but right now I'm enjoying where they are going immensely.
What I like about Korra is that she is not Aang. She's the opposite, and while her brashness and being headstrong seems stupid, it leads to a different kind of character growth for her. Aang's growth came from the fact that he never wanted to be the Avatar and that he had to master all the other three elements. Korra loves that she's the avatar. She's already learned all the elements. Her growth is that she has to mature AS the Avatar, not grow into it. She actually has to connect more with the spiritual aspect of being the Avatar, grow out of her black & white mentality, and so far they are setting it up nicely with what has gone on.
Plus, the new support characters are [tornado fang]ing awesome. I love learning more about Tenzin's bro & sis. I love Varrick. I LOOOVE the Twins. So far, I'm hooked.

The thing is, you're focusing on Amon rather than the Equalist movement itself. The movement highlights the imbalance of power between nonbenders and benders. While it's a problem without an easy solution, and the Equalists were rather extreme about their methods, I really think Korra should've at least resolved it through a speech or something.
I was also kind of hoping Mako would become an Equalist. He practically shares the same backstory as Amon's made up one. Would've led to a very interesting conflict of ideals.

I would agree this with if I actually felt the growth of Korra was convincing. To be fair, they didn't know whether a Season 2 would exist in the first place, so Korra undergoes an unfortunate character retrogression.
For now though, I'm waiting for the war to happen and the stakes to rise. Tarrlok version 2 makes for a strange, somewhat redundant antagonist, but you take what you can get.

Oh I understand the Equalist movement entirely. I was more responding to the fact that Amon wasn't a hypocrite, as much as a great villain. I agree that the resolution could've been better, but yeah time constraints. But one thing it did show overall was that the Equalists had the power of technology on their side to put them almost on equal par with benders. Season 2 could follow up with that. It's one reason why I think Varrick was introduced in the first place.

It's not so much a character regression. It honestly makes sense the way she is right now. It's only been 6 months. She feels she defeated Amon. She feels she mastered Airbending. She feels ready to be the Avatar finally and that her Dad & Tenzin are holding her back, which completely fits her character. Plus she's still just a teenager. At that age, teens feels like they're always right. Hell that doesn't go away till later on. Sometimes it doesn't. And what's awesome is that they're showing the conflict with Aang's kids because he wasn't a perfect father, or possibly that great of one.

From Bryan Konietzko, one of the creators of the series.
While we’re on the subject of world leaders, I saw a comment on my dashboard after the Barnes & Noble signing from someone who was dissatisfied with the fact that we didn’t continue the Equalist plot in Book 2 and wrote something to the effect that we were just keeping the bending oppressors in power and sweeping the plight of the oppressed non-benders under the rug. This is definitely not the case. Our idea was that the Equalist revolution forced the United Republic Council (Tenzin included) to face the fact that the majority of the population was not being represented. As a result, they disbanded the council and held open elections, and Raiko, a non-bender, was elected as the president of the United Republic. Looking back, I do think we could have made that clearer, but I think we were probably trying not to bog down the premiere episode with what we refer to as stuff that’s getting too “Trade Federation-y,” since there was plenty to pack into that episode as it was.

Sorry, PB, no more Equalists. Their role in Korra's time is done.
I found it weird that they never explained what happened to his mother.
I think they left it out purposedly. To leave either an open ending easy enough for us to understand that he finally had control of his life and his family, and for there to be a fourth book if anyone wanted to close up anything.
I was reading the whole tread before making this and I know it is VERY VERY late but, there is a 3 part book series were they go out to look for her. It's called "Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Search" . Part 3 will be out November 12, 2013.

So many people are going crazy over this latest episode. Some went as far as to say it was one of the best episodes of the entire franchise.
I... don't really understand the hype. It was a great episode, sure, but something felt off to me.
Didn't Avatar Roku explain in the first series that the dragons were the ones who taught humans how to firebend? Yet, here is the lion-turtle, granting everyone with the power of fire. Might be a plot inconsistency. In this episode, the dragons simply seemed to influence Wan in using bending as an extension of his body, but the power itself doesn't come from them.
Other than that, it was certainly a fun watch. I'm hoping the real meat will come in the next episode.
-
The Lion Turtles just gave the elements to the people, but they learned how to Bend from the dragons/sky bison/badger moles and so forth. Before Wan learned how use it, he would simply shoot it out. (No seriously, me and practically all the NYCC crowd squee'd when he was doing the Dragon Dance).
-
My friends and I squee'd when he did that too. :D

Ahhh, okay. That makes much more sense.
I always knew the badger moles helped Toph control her bending, but for some reason, I had it in my head that the dragons granted firebending.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Plus it ties so much together. How Aang learned "Energybending" from that one Lion Turtle. Why he's even called the "Avatar" in the first place (because he's Raava's avatar). Why he's the bridge between both worlds. It also makes a wonderful connection between Wan & Korra, since Wan was also impulsive and did things without thinking them through, which is what leads to chaos. So now there's so much potential for her to grow. Hopefully she does.
It also opens up other possibilities towards this season's finale. Does she defeat Vaatu? If she does, is the Avatar even needed? What if Vaatu claims someone of his own to be his Avatar? Has he already? It just really opened up this series.
-
it's currently believed that the lion turtle who taught aang to energybend is the same one who gave wan firebending, thanks to the similar head markings (all lion turtles have unique head markings).
also you mentioned the connection, but it's more of a parallel. korra was just trying to help, thinking she was doing the right thing. instead, things are literally going to hell because of her actions.
same with wan.
anyways, unalaq is definitely in contact with vaatu. we even saw unalaq leave the spirit world through a spirit portal (desna points it out, asking if he was just in the spirit world, and unalaq dismisses the question completely). to what extent he's in contact we don't know, but i don't see a dark avatar truly happening. unalaq would need to learn the other 3 elements to be a true dark avatar, and even then if vaatu entered his body and they merged, vaatu would likely only use unalaq's body as a puppet, whereas the avatar/raava link is more even.
and korra can never kill vaatu; to defeat vaatu completely would also result in raava's destruction. considering how closely linked the avatar and raava are, that would also likely mean korra's death. light cannot exist without darkness, as the two share a symbiotic fluctuating relationship. the stronger one gets, the weaker the other is, but one cannot exist without the other. raava explained that to wan.
-
Things have changed though. Vaatu fed on the chaos between the humans & the spirits, so if freed he could easily feed on the chaos of the Water Tribe civil war, plus everyday human life. It was probably just a boast, but in there battle he said that he might be able to rid himself of Raava forever.
Plus what I still find interesting is Jinora's role in all of this. There's more to Tenzin's story than just him reuniting with his siblings.
-
Remember the statue she saw? It showed Raava behind Wan, arms encompassing him. So there's that.
Also it probably glowed because the spirit portal was opened. Also I don't think that Vaatu realizes that without Raava he cannot exist. He can get as powerful as he wants, but if he were to completely wipe her out he'd wipe himself out. Things have changed in the physical realm, but the fundamental laws of the universe cannot change. Light cannot exist without darkness, and therefore Raava cannot exist without Vaatu (and vice versa). It is Raava's light that gives definition to Vaatu's darkness, and her light that he corrupts into darkness. If she's gone, what will he have to corrupt?
-
Here's the thing though, if you go by the universal "big bang" theory and such, darkness can and had existed without the light before. Mind you, that's probably not how Vaatu is portrayed, but it's still possible. They are most likely going the whole corruption aspect of light & darkness, order & chaos.
-
There is a thing going the interweb that people are thinking that Vaatu want to make a Dark Avatar. Other then that, Part 1 and 2 are the best episodes in the whole LoK series hands down in my opinion thus far.
-
OH MY GOD. THIS JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER & BETTER!!!
I didn't expect Iroh to show up, but I'm so happy that he did. And his appearance makes perfect sense, plus it's comforting to know that Iroh will live on forever in the Spirit World. His body may be dead, but his soul (and love for tea) shall be eternal...

It's such a perfect tribute to Mako
So apparently they just finished mixing the final episode of Book 2 (http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/66754019170/major-milestone-for-us-today-as-we-mixed-the-final).
And well...

HNNGGHH
-
Wait, that's not SPARKY SPARKY BOOM MAN, is it? :o
-
Vaatu knows Hyper Beam too, ya know.
-
Oh right, duh. I'd love if he came back, though.
His "death" wasn't convincing.
-
It was really unclear.
-
Pretty sure he'd be dead already though.
-
Yeah probably. And no chance of him surviving in a way similar to Iroh.
-
Plus it would take away from the pure awesomeness, that is this!

ONE HOUR BOOK TWO FINALE UNLOCKING ONLINE AT MIDNIGHT EST (http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/67071039388/korranation-heres-our-big-news-straight-from)
-
Wow. Soooo that's pretty much ALL of Korra tonight.
[tornado fang] YEAH!!
-
Except since it's unlocking at midnight EST, that means west coasters like myself get it at 9PM PST
also known as RIGHT AFTER EPS 11 AND 12 AIR HERE
2 hour Korra block for us!
-
Heh, I'm never home to watch it anyways. I watch it online when I get home from work, so tonight shall be no different!
-
That works too!
-
That was one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
-
Agreed. It's been 2-3 hours since I finished it, and I'm still hyped over it.
So well done.
-
It opens up so many possibilities for what they can do with Book 3 & 4.
OMG THOUGH. THAT SCENE WITH RAAVA AND THE PREVIOUS AVATAR'S.....THE FEEEEEELS....
-
This truly is a new spiritual age, and Korra is in the rare position of being both the last and first Avatar. The previous cycle is broken, and though there may be ways she can hook back into those past lives, she's probably cut off them forever. However, she is also the first of a new cycle, which really brings home the idea that this is a new age.
But yeah, that was sad. So incredibly sad.
-
Just finished Thor 2 to come back to an unexpected 4 episode release. Convergence. Convergence everywhere.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid I don't share the same enthusiasm about the finale. It was fine for me up until the last episode. Gigantic spiritual avatar battles? Random, unexplained Jinora deus ex machina? Unalaq just dies? I mean, really? B( And Asami gets the short end of the stick for season closure again? At least there's no Makorra anymore...
Honestly though, I was expecting the season to end on a bad note since there's book 3 and 4 to come. I think it's really lame that Korra is able to conveniently knock out a major antagonist/season rather than having a multi-season epic.
I think one of those is an unofficial one made from the leaks...
Anyways I wonder if the trailer hints at the Spirit Wilds returning. Which is bad cause last time that happened humanity was forced to live on the backs of lion turtles.
But it is interesting that so many people are bending now. Including Bumi?!?
-
I didn't look through the thread, but did you guys know that some mexican or whatever channel releaed by accident episodes of Book III from 3 and up to 6 or 8?
It was on their website, and people saved it as quickly as possible.0
Just so you know.
-
Yeah. That's what I meant by the leaks lol
And I believe it was a Spanish channel, it was episodes 3-6.
But the thing is even if we wanted to watch them... they're completely dubbed in Spanish.
-
But the thing is even if we wanted to watch them... they're completely dubbed in Spanish.
I think some dudes from /co/ were working on subbing them? I think, I cannot be sure. Look it up if you want.
-
I'd rather watch them in english. Besides, the first episode wasn't leaked so I don't see the point.
Thanks for the heads-up, though.
-
Just finished watching the season premier of Korra.
Thus far, excellent three episodes!
-
Yeah, Book 3 is turning out to be quite amazing. Really happy with those three episodes.
Folks on another forum pointed out how the new villains have been imprisoned for 13 years. Or since Korra was 4, which is when she discovered she was the Avatar.
Odds are they tried to take her out, hence the ridiculously high-security. This also explains why everyone was so overprotective of Korra; that compound was built to keep her safe in case the villains tried to take her out again.
Remember Zuko's first instinct was to alert Lin because they'd be after the Avatar. So odds are that quite a few people were in on the protection plot for Korra. Tenzin was also supposed to move to the South Pole to teach Korra Airbending there, so he was likely in on it too.
It's actually kinda ironic that Korra leaving the spirit portals open has now allowed for those who likely tried to take her out once to try again with greater power.
Oh and also OLD ZUKO IS JUST AS AWKWARD AS EVER :3
-
Yes. LORD ZUKO was amazing. Love his interaction with the Twins.
The last 5 episodes of this season has been pulled by Nickelodeon. According to the creators, the last 5 will be digital-only. :\
More details to come at Comic Con.

That's a bit spoilery ya know. Just a bit.
The finale was amazing but that's rather spoilery for it.
-
I guess that's true, I had figured since it didn't show anything specific... but reactions are enough.
-
Amazing season. Amazing ending.
-
I have the last episode downloading as we speak.
-
Downloading? As oppose to watching it on Nick.com
-
If Book 3 was this good all the way through (especially with that finale) I have high hopes for Book 4.
-
Downloading? As oppose to watching it on Nick.com
The Showbox app allows you to download and watch episodes. Sometimes the episodes buffer too much when you watch it, but downloading makes the video lag free.

Love Bolin's new style. They all look good.
CAN'T WAIT

The first episode has been out for a bit now.
VERY great start. Can't wait for the next episode!
-
Woo, can't wait for the next episode!! 8D
-
Holy [parasitic bomb], this episode was pretty [tornado fang]ing dark.
-
Kind of sad that the finale is next week though. After that no more avatar ever.
-
I'm going to miss Korra so much, it's not [tornado fang]ing funny.
Here's hoping there's a movie, in the near future.
-
Yeaaah, no more animated Avatar universe makes me sad!
-
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd that's the end. No more Avatar Universe. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.
Fantastic ending though! I was very very very pleased.
-
I need to know.
Comparing with Aang's finale, which is better?
-
Honestly, cannot tell right now. Still gushing over the ending to Korra.
-
that was amazing through and through.
especially the korrasami part. I mean I only started shopping it as a "that would be cool but it'll never happen" thing
But it did happen! praise be to bryke for not being afraid to include a lesbian relationship on a Nick show
LOVED it! Near-perfect ending.
that was amazing through and through.
especially the korrasami part. I mean I only started shopping it as a "that would be cool but it'll never happen" thing
But it did happen! praise be to bryke for not being afraid to include a lesbian relationship on a Nick show

That's the thing though; I'm not entirely convinced that Korra and Asami are bisexual. At the very least, the hand-holding and staring was simply a shout-out to the Korrasami shippers, but it doesn't actually mean they have feelings for each other. It's the very last episode, and the creators probably just wanted to throw in something nice for them.
Korra and Asami have lost so much of themselves and the people close to them, which caused their friendship to be closer than ever. And it's not like hand holding is uncommon for women; they do it many, many times.
Now, I'm NOT saying it's impossible for them to be bisexual. I'm just saying it's not officially set in stone, just from that one scene. The only people who know for sure are the creators.
-
If it was just the hand holding, I think the "just friends" possibility would be higher.
But there were no need for them to stop at the entrance and stare at each other like that. They could've ended it with them just walking into the Spirit Portal. The stare pretty much sealed it. It doesn't mean full on "HEY, WE'RE INTO EACH OTHER NOW!" but more that it's just the beginning.
I'll quote the AV Club's review on the matter...
The nature of Korra and Asami’s relationship isn’t made overly explicit, but the writers heavily hint at a romantic connection by having the two characters holding hands and looking into each other’s eyes as they teleport to the spirit world for a much-needed vacation. It’s not uncommon for platonic friends to hold hands, especially when they’re getting ready to do something scary together, but it’s that final look that elevates their relationship to something more. The handholding is more than enough to make Korrasami shippers go nuts, but the reaction probably wouldn’t be as strong if the episode ended with Korra and Asami facing forward rather than toward each other.
That added eye contact makes the moment more intimate, and going off into the spirit world is such a wonderful metaphor for sexual awakening that it’s easy to jump to conclusions. Further contributing to the romantic aura is the staging and the music, working together to create a dreamlike atmosphere around these two women that heightens the emotional impact of every action. The grabbing of the hands, the turning to each other, the teleporting into another dimension, it all becomes more powerful when depicted with such evocative sound and visuals. But it’s still far more ambiguous than the ending of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which cemented Aang and Katara’s future romance with a kiss.
-
apparently the original ending made it more explicit that that two became a couple but they had to tone it down a bit.
-
I honestly think it's better this way.
-
apparently the original ending made it more explicit that that two became a couple but they had to tone it down a bit.
Actually, I heard from someone that the original storyboard for the ending didn't have them holding hands.

No, they didn't stop at the entrance. Notice how the light enveloped them as they stepped inside? Korra and Asami stood inside the portal, while the light slowly transported them. While they waited, they stared at each other. Now, I'll admit the staring and lighting was very suggestive, but I still stand by their sexuality being speculation. It was primarily to show their thanks to the Korrasami fans and their support of the show. Kind of a "Hey guys, have some Korra x Asami imagery".
This, however, does not mean they literally evolved their sexuality into something more JUST because of them.
One way or another, it was an ambiguous message. It's entirely up to the viewer's interpretation. That's what makes the ending so brilliant; it's controversial without actually offending any censors. It's up in the air, so to speak.
-
never mind that their pose perfectly mirrors the one we see Varrick and Zhu Li in moments before at their wedding.
Here's a great post (http://heartlighting.tumblr.com/post/105606009782/final-bows-or-korrasami-is-canon-because) explaining how the staging and everything of the final scene shows that it was meant to link them in a romantic relationship, not just as really good friends.
-
If there was a time I thought a Kingdom Hearts character was gay, half the cast would be. I don't know how many times Sora and Riku gazed dreamily into each other's eyes. Roxas and Sora, two dudes, grabbed each other's hands in a similar way to this ending. Roxas then started to gaze at Sora, almost uncomfortably so.
Do they have feelings for each other? No. It's showing their unbreakable bond. This situation could be viewed in a similar fashion.
At this point, I've seen pretty much all the cases. This is the hype period; everyone is looking at this through starry eyes, preaching that Korrasami is canon.
If the hand holding and staring were, indeed, added in the storyboard at the last minute during production, then the primary plan was for them to just be friends; best friends. However, we don't know if that storyboard rumor is true.
Anything could happen.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with you guys, I'm just stating when all is said and done, it's simply a possibility. Until the creators actually give the official say, we can only dream.
-
Well here's your official say (http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/105916338157/korrasami-is-canon-you-can-celebrate-it-embrace). Korrasami is canon. You gotta deal with it.
-
... Um, okay cool. Why are you making it seem like I hated Korrasami?
All I said was it was only a possibility and we should wait until the official say, instead of foaming at the mouth about it. Now we got word, so cool, whatever. That's all I wanted.
-
wasn't saying you hated it. just wanted to reference korra's first line lol
