Airing: April 5, 2009 - ?
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
Studio: BONES
Website: www.hagaren.jp (http://www.hagaren.jp)

Quote
The wraparound jacket band on the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga will confirm on Friday that a new television anime series is in the works. A new anime series was a topic of much fan discussion for several months, but it was thrust into a more public spotlight last month when a management document was purportedly leaked from the BONES anime studio. The document listed Fullmetal Alchemist animator Yasuhiro Irie as "Hagane 2 kantoku" (Iron/Fullmetal 2 director).

A new commercial for FMA 2 (http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2009/02/08/fullmetal-alchemist-cm2/) was released, showing a few scenes from the anime. Not much info is known about it so far. Right now, we can only wait and see...

Hopefully this won't drag out too long. If things last too long, they get boring. Look at Inuyasha.

Better example would be DBZ. Which graduallly got worse the longer it got.

I'm actually hoping this stays a little closer to the manga storyline.

'Cause that [parasitic bomb] is [tornado fang]ing awesome.

You do know that's the reason this is being made, right? :P

Funny you mention DBZ, that's another series that's gonna get a re-release this April (now in glorious HD and 50% less episodes! XD).

You know, if FMA and Evangelion are getting remakes, then no one's safe from them.

They're taking their sweet time w/ the Evangelion movies though...

as for FMA 2, I will watch it from ep.1, but what I can't wait is when Wrath beats the [parasitic bomb] out of Greed  8D

All I hope is that they stick to the anime names. It is confusing enough when Greed is Wrath or something like that. Manga and anime are not really agreeing.

I'd imagine a side-story, as Al is Armor Bound again.

Are you fukken nuts? That was one of the most epic scenes in the manga -- Mustang defeated, his ass kicked six ways through friday, and just about to be sent to the next county by Lust, and then he frickin' CARVES a transmutation circle on the back of his own hand with a piece of debris and goes "No [tornado fang]ing way I'm dying alone. If I'm going, you're coming with me" and starts pulverizing her with his fire alchemy -- if memory serves, he'd already cremated her around 65 times before I either stopped reading (because I couldn't find the manga anymore) or he got help, I don't remember which came first.

Man, I got a long way to go on the manga side and has it finished yet/ Anyway, FMA 2 must follow the manga or it will be just another sequel to a surprisingly annoying show. I want the same lightheartedness that the manga had.

[tornado fang] yes. that part was awesome. he just killed her and killed her untill her Philosophers stone gave out, If I recall.
I liked when Al finally 'remembered" what he saw in the gates, and learned to do alchemy by clapping his hands, like his bro. then again, ALL of the parts were awesome XD.
personally though, i wanna see some Barry. that guy was awesome. and hilarious.

cant wait to see this. I think 09 is going to be a very good year for anime. weve got Yugioh 5D's, Casshern Sins, and if this proves to be good, then this as well.

Alright, so to summarize episode 1:
-Very nice filler
-Nice foreshadowing for the huge and important things to come
-Armstrong is as awesome (and sparkly) as ever
-Poor Isaac, you feel even worse for him if you already read the manga :(
-Nice OP and ED

Looks like the next episode is flashbacks.

- Roy turns to him and shouts out: "Hughes is dead! He can't be here!"
- Envy manages to get out of the flames, and turns to face Riza
- Changes into Roy and calls her.

Simple, Erevens don't like black folks.

But real answer, she, and the rest of those people were always light skinned.

It's just that during the original production, they never actually had an official color pallete for anything, so since they were presumsed to be in a desert town, the animators just gave them dark skin since they all live in the desert.

But by the time the mangaka told them they [tornado fang]'d up, it was already too late. Being the 1st episode and all.

Am I the only one who thinks that the explaination of the backstory is done a little too fast? Didn't they push the contents of like 3-4 episodes into this episode 2?

This version is going to be an adaptation of the Manga, and also somthing that's being done in  a way mainly for the people who have already read it and watched the original.

Of course they always were, there's absolutely no tone difference between Rose and Ed in the manga. Whereas Scar was always noticeably darker.

Not so much a presumption as a deliberate deviation. During the course of the first anime they've literally turned the place into a second Ishbal.

The content itself comes from many episodes, but there's still plenty of information not covered. What they mostly wanted to do is show the event in chronological order and depict the changes to the Gate of Alchemy and introduce Truth.

Complete with references to "all is one, one is all" and Gluttony that new viewers wouldn't get because the event is shown too early.

Heck, this early on they're already throwing phrases like "Xerxes", "Philosopher of the East" and "Rentanjutsu" at us. In some ways it's a really nice way to unify the start of the series with the elements introduced later, in other ways it's just spoiling too much.

is it anything new to cram things into an episode? Casshern sins crammed a shitload of backstory into the lastf few episodes instead of spreading it out. the others were all about Casshern stabbing Luna and growling.

I agree with Zans last point though.

also, everyone was a shade of white or grey actually,  since the Full Metal Alchemist manga is black and whitle/greyscale.

The statue wasn't filler. It was properly there in Ch2. Ed uses it to almost kill Cornello.

Still, the majority of the episode was pretty faithful. I'm still a little disappointed that it wasn't "panel to panel" faithful though.

Besides, I see no problem with introducing some backstory a little quick.

In fact, they're actually doing a good job out of it, IMO.

The statue wasn't filler. It was properly there in Ch2. Ed uses it to almost kill Cornello.

What you saw in episode 3 with the statue was filler. He transmuted a single hand from the statue downstairs to smash Cornello. In the manga, he turns Cornello's entire office into a huge statue of Leto and actually smashes Cornello with it. Big difference, and kinda kills the moment where it became a tourist attraction and Hohenheim remarked on that alchemist having bad taste.

The first Blu-ray Disc and DVD volume for the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime series will include a Mōmoku no Renkinjutshi (Blind Alchemist) OVA when Aniplex ships it on August 26. The OVA is based on the side story of the same name that manga creator Hiromu Arakawa drew for the Fullmetal Alchemist Guidebook. The first Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood disc release will also feature the first two episodes from the television series. The Limited Initial Edition will add "Hiromu Arakawa's 4-Panel Theater," which will be the first time that Arakawa's four-panel gag manga have been animated. The other extras will include an "Eye Catch Card" illustrated with the commercial bumper artwork from the anime and a 16-page Alchemist's Log about the behind-the-scenes production. Hiroki Kanno is drawing the disc jacket illustrations. Arakawa herself will illustrate a "Rouge" box for the first four volumes.

So, from what I've heard, Shinsen's translator for FMA has left after Shinsen got a C&D letter from Funimation, even though they subbed episode 4 under another tag AFTER they received the letter and as long as no new translator is found for the project, FMA is dropped. Which means everbody's gonna jump ship now and starts downloading the subs from Eclipse. Terrific.

Care to explain?

It was all Envy's fault. In the first anime his role as Lt. Ross was much better, and Hughes fought back, which gave you the illusion he would actually make it out of there alive. Plus, Envy just put a stupid face when he transformed into Gracia.

Also, the scene where he apologizes and bleeds around was not as good. I liked it better when he just stood there, then fell down in slow motion into a flashback. On the other hand, I liked the part when Envy hung the phone.

I also miss Ed seeing the ghost from the train, but that's just pure nostalgia factor.

I didnt quite like how they handled episode 11.  They cut out all the fun parts and the big dramatic moment when they find out the bridge was out.
Seriously, wheres Ed chasing Bunny all over town and breaking [parasitic bomb]? And for the love of God, The armwrestler guy only got a cameo? He is supposed to be the guy who Ed crushes his arm with alchemy.
they spent the major focus on the birth, but they could have squeezed all that in there!

So it sounds as if the first series was always stuffing extra things in and stretching stories into 2 episodes, while the second series has to take some things out to fit a chapter into 1 episode.  Maybe if the show were a full 30 minutes without commercials, it would be just right.

2 Chapters.

as for ep.11, 2.8 chapters XD.  the Izumi stuff will be for the next ep~

FFFFFFFffff-

They took out the beastman parrt!

I liked that part in the chapter too. I guess the producers thought it'd be a waste of their budget, even though animation quality is clearly somewhat shoddy.

Nonetheless, it doesn't deter from the fact that this is still good to watch. I just had to rage a bit since I really did like Ed and Al fighting that beastman.

Can you explain the "beastman" for us anime-only folks?

They pretty much cut out half a chapter of content and kinda replaced it with ED getting a revelation after trying to eat Al and eating ants. Yeah... >_>

Anyways, I still really liked this episode anyways, and the Greed vs Ed fight in the preview look [tornado fang]ing awesome.

Beastman was also in the anime-only rendition. It was faithful to the manga to a point until after Greed kidnaps Al.

Yeah, the thing about this show is, some of the changes and omissions seem to have been done because the audience would have already seen those things in the first series... But then why did they have to remake the story from the beginning in the first place?  They're straddling a fence here.
Title: Re: Fullmetal Alchemist 2
Post by: Zan on July 19, 2009, 11:04:35 PM
But the scene in question was not in the first anime. They did include it, but only in such a ridiculously half-assed way that it mucks up the later revisit. But I guess that's the price we have to pay for giant Cornello.

[spoiler]I accept the decision of Big Envy in CG, not to mention it seems they're mixing a bit of animation as well for certain angles.  Animating Big Envy alone would be too much for a weekly series and frankly, it'll suck, so CG was a good move there.  Aside from that, everything else is well done~ and the animation consistency is still ongoing.[/spoiler]

[spoiler] I have to ask though, how is it that his "pawns" didnt get killed? or, like Hoenheim, end up with immortal bodies? It seems like although the basic idea was the same as with Xerxes, but this time, different with the addition of the ones to open the gate...

Funi's released ep 41.
I really like how they've done it. I particularly like how they did the moment where Ed realizes he's been impaled by the metal beam, and when he's at the point of passing out Al passes out again.
They really managed to capture the moment REALLY well. The music there is excellent.

Released it how?  The subs on Youtube?  Because they're up to 44 (http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=video&v=4584) on the Funimation site.

Oh yeah, I saw the first episode English-dubbed this week, and while I don't really mind any of the voices at this point, it's a shame the beginning and ending have to be shredded because American TV needs more commercials.

From what I recall, that episode actually did it quite differently than the manga. Since Ed in episode 2 didn't transmute a whole statue of Leto, but only a fist coming from an already existing one.

I've been a subscriber to the theory that:

[spoiler]Every gate of truth is inside oneself and that the only reason Ed and Al have TWO doors (because the rest of the people we've seen enter that area have only had one) is because they are connected like previous described.
