Title: Anyone ever conduct a hero to stage size comparison with all the 2D MM games?
Post by: Sub Tank on February 17, 2010, 10:14:05 PM
I'm looking for some sort of "magic" ratio.

I know it was pretty bad in MMZ.  If I recall, there was a picture showing that the stage height was literally like five Zeros tall.  I'm kind of curious where the other games stand, but I don't have the emulation stuff to take screenshots in their native resolution.  Everything on the internet is either stretched or cropped.

From what I can tell, most of the X8 stages only felt like 4-6 X heads tall. Sure, the MM stages on the NES days are tiny compared to them, sans the boss rooms.

It's also funny how ZX and ZXA carries over the small room ordeal too.

I have no idea about X8, because I think it would occasionally alter the camera distance, giving you more or less free space around you.

For all the 2D games, it was fixed.

When I first saw the title, I thought it was something about someone conducting a live performance of numerous Mega Man songs with an orchestra.

Then I actually read it instead of seeing just "conduct" and "MM". And I was like "TECHNICAL STUFF D="

I contribute so much.

And yet, I feel Flashman's stage is the largest of the MM2 stages.. which I find odd.

I contribute so much.

..Yes, you do.

Er, when I say stage, I mean screen.

I knew that! But yeah, it is weird. If you have any specific games and examples, I could get the screenies for you, Sub Tank.

Stretched shouldn't be a problem, since it doesn't affect the ratio.

7-6

6-5

5-4

Funny how that worked out.
Being extremely generous with upper estimates here though.

Yeah, that's what I was looking for.

I guess that pretty much confirms my belief that everything has been shrinking.  Very interesting.

In the next series you'll be a tiny man in a long hallway.

You know, the Zero games could be because of the smaller resolution of the GBA and DS (for ZX)

That's part of it. Note that the GB games have a screen not much more than five Megamans tall as well (not including the HUD):

On the other hand, the sprites also got larger as they got more detailed. The NES and SNES games both have a resolution of 256x224, but X1-3 (and 7) still have a "tighter" screen than 1-6.

(the GB and GBC are 160x144, and the GBA is 240x160 - note the shift in aspect ratio, as well).

Right, I was wondering how such a comparison between the Game Boy series and MegaMan 7 would look.
