Title: New Gundam Vs. title countdown
Post by: HokutoNoBen on February 10, 2010, 01:08:42 AM
http://gundam-vs.jp/ac-new/

In about a week from now (and just in time for AOU 2010, no less!), the newest game in the ever popular Gundam vs. series will make an appearance. Arcade release will soon follow.

If I were a betting man, this smells of a possible tie-in with Unicorn, coming later this year. But we shall see...!

I'm merely hoping that whatever it is, PS3 gets a cut of that. That GVG Next faux news still stings...

I really wish they would do a Gundam Battle (Chronicles, Royal, Universe) series game on a console. Those were really fun, and just about the best representation of Gundam as a video game in my opinion. A console release would allow for much greater number of enemies, and maybe online play. An online co-op mode would be incredible.

Only thing?

Such a game would likely take a minute for them to make. The relatively poorer graphics for the Gundam Battle games on the PSP (as compared to GvG's, at least) are for that reason; you get MUCH more units to play with instead.

I won't say such a thing is impossible, but I'm thinking Bamco is prolly fine keeping the series where it is at the moment. If for no other reason than because it means that they don't necessarily have to think about starting from scratch for the sake of a PS3-level of environment.

Of course, such a thing could also apply to this new Gundam Vs. game too.  8D

But I'm really hoping that, after all this time, maybe they'll finally be willing to move the series to System 357. This is the Namco-made arcade board which is basically PS3 architecture in an arcade cabinet (and Tekken 6 runs on it, as well).

If any time was right to give Gundam vs. the same treatment Tekken's gotten, I would think now would be a good time.  *o*

Well, that's basically what I'm implying as well!  8D

Namco System 357 = PS3 hardware in an arcade cab. If the series finally moves there, then a PS3 port would be basically imminent.  *o*

If I had it my way?

This would be a Gundam Unicorn type of party. I would love it if, for the first HD generation Gundam vs. game, it was Unicorn that got that honor.  *o*

Well I see no reason why it wouldn't be.  The Unicorn is in Gundam vs. Gundam Next Plus, and it's very good!

hurr hurr graphics are super important durp durp

Gundam Battle series had fine graphics. Even if they were less than GvG, it really had the diversity of units and gameplay to make up for it in droves. Not only would a console version look better, but allow more on screen at once.

Yeah, way to miss the entire point of my post. The way you "quoted" it makes it all the more clear. 8D

So, allow me to try this again.

It takes time and money to make a game engine, and all of the assets to go with it. The very reason that the Gundam Battle series has been able to go to upwards of 300+ units for its latest entrant, is because it's been using the same engine since Gundam Battle Tactics, released in 2005. They've just been doing more to continuously add on to that engine for each progressive sequel released in these last 5 years.

For all the time that they COULD invest in making a game for the PS3, or even Wii, would it be worth it? Not likely, given how much Gundam Battle has settled in a nice niche as a "portable" franchise, which only works well with the notion of how Japan loves its portables. No Western release planned for the series only does more to cement that notion.

So, it has nothing to do with how "graphics are super important", and I NEVER said anything of the sort in that post you failed at quoting. Dunno how in the hell you gleaned that from my post...

I guess I saw a pattern when you started and ended the post with lines heavily steeped in graphics.

No matter which way they go, the game will have to be built from the ground up. Might as well make it the best Gundam game ever, and give it Battle's gameplay with enhancements and expansions. It's obvious it wont be as expansive as Universe, because it will be the first in the engine, but that isnt the point. It would still never the less be insanely awesome, and may lead to sequels with more suits gaining ground on the PSP series.

I guess the only thing? Gundam Battle has more or less done a lot to fall into the "Pokemon role". By this, I mean that it was constructed as a series that was built on portables, built its fanbase around the portable market, which furthermore makes any attempt to try and "buck the trend" a risky business, at that.

So, logically speaking, I don't think Bamco sees any reason to jeopardize the position GB enjoys on the PSP. Maybe I could be wrong, but I don't see it as such.

I honestly can't see why they don't translate the Gundam vs. Gundam series for over here.  I mean, they do it with Dynasty Warriors: Gundam.

Yeah. I honestly think DW Gundam, being a kinda spinoff new style game, would be more of a potential financial risk than say GvG.

I honestly can't see why they don't translate the Gundam vs. Gundam series for over here.  I mean, they do it with Dynasty Warriors: Gundam.

Well, to be fair, they at least "tried" twice before.

The PS2 ports of Federation vs. Zeon and Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam were both released over here, back in the day. Nobody really bought 'em though, so I guess that was all the "reason" Bandai needed to not bother translating any of the other games released in the last few years. Bamco seemingly has not been moved at all in this area yet, either.

Then you factor in the notion that the PSP market is all but kaput over here, and well....  8D

That's why again, I think that the only means that will come from the Gundam vs. series being given a second chance in the West, is if it comes through a) a current-generation console iteration and b) it's marketed correctly, ideally alongside a new series.

Short of that, I don't even think Bamco will even risk the notion of trying the Gundam vs. series over here, much less more people being receptive to it. You're not going to capture many American hearts and minds with PSP releases...

Oh that's exactly why I'd like a PS3 release for the game, as I feel it could capture some of the Dynasty Warriors market, and perhaps even more given the Arcade's popularity with the series.

This is currently a rumour at present but it seems the next Gundam Versus game, that’s been hinted at on the official site, will be Gundam Unicorn focused. This would mark a return to the series specific approach that the games had prior to the Gundam vs Gundam shift a few years ago. This also means we’ll get to finally see both the Sinanju and Banshee in a game with any luck. In addition to this news, it also appears that the Unicorn Gundam will also make an appearance in Gundam Assault Survive and separately Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus will also receive some “Special Edition” DLC sometime in April. In any case, we’ll know for sure on these by the end of the week.

Certainly would be nice, but then that would basically give rise to the notion that people will want the option to put whomever they want in whatever suit. And I doubt Capcom or Bamco are willing to be bothered with that much in the way of work (much less paying the seiyuu that much more in the way of additional lines). 8D

Still, that would be so awesome, if only so that we could hear the likes of Amuro shouting out "SHINING FINGER" and the like!  8D

"You're afraid of dying, aren't you guys?  In that case....YOU SHOULDN'T BE FIGHTING AT ALL!"

But yeah, it would be pretty awesome.  They did it with DW: Gundam 2.

Yeah, I remember that.

Still amuses me how, some how, Quatre was able to just lie low for a while, and builds an uber Gundam with a wack-ass piloting system, seemingly with little to no outside help. I mean, granted, he was wealthy. But where was able to even secure the resources necessary to BUILD such a thing?  8D

To be fair, smaller roster of characters in DWG2. That's why this thing worked in a number of the past Gundam Vs. titles, because the overall cast was smaller.

Now we stand to be getting a roster that could be STARTING in the 50s, this game. That'd be a whole lot of script writing and voice acting to have done...  8D

New report that sheds a bit more light.

Quote
Namco Bandai announced its new Gundam VS arcade game at the AOU arcade event on Friday. The full name of the game is "Gundam Extreme VS." Extreme versus what?

Actually, the "Extreme" part of the title appears to be the theme for the game's development. Producer Ryuichiro Baba, speaking at a stage event at the show promised "extreme evolution" for the series with the new title.

The first area of evolution is in the game's graphics. Previous titles have run on the PlayStation 2-based System 246 board. The new game ups the horsepower to the PlayStation 3-based System 357 board.

Namco Bandai shared some images of the game with the press. It's unclear if these are actual screens or concept images.

The basics of the game will remain the same, with a standard eight-way joystick and four button setup along with the 2on2 gameplay for which the VS series is known. According to a report at Impress Watch, the game will focus on ground-based combat and do away with space combat. Baba said to expect additional functionality appropriate of the "Extreme Evolution" theme.

Expected of any Gundam game, Namco Bandai is already making a big fuss over the new Mobile Suit additions. Baba said to expect a number of Mobile Suits that have not appeared in past VS titles. The Impress Watch report claims to have seen Zudah from MS IGLOO and Crossbone Gundam X1 from Crossbone Gundam in in the AOU trailer. Both of these would be firsts for the series.

Gundam Extreme VS is set for Fall 2010 release. However, players will get an early chance at the title through location tests, which Baba said to expect for the summer.

Well, no hope of 0G combat for us. Ah well... 8D

On the other hand, if they're really making that much of a fuss over the fact that they've got so much more horsepower to play with, I wouldn't be surprise if that would effectively close the book on a PSP port altogether. But we'll see...

Release Date: (Arcade, of course)

At the earliest late September~October. Seems like there is a bundle for the game + SYSTEM357 in December as well?

IC Card System:

Essentially the same thing as SF4 Arcade's card system.

- Battle Records
- Replays
- Ranking

You can also do the following with your card (along with a cellphone, seems like):

- Event battles
- Unlock Questionnaire
- Tags
- Selecting your operator
- Selecting BGM
- Changing your nickname
- Changing your Gauge Layout (<- O_o???)

System Changes:

- Awaken System is back in
- No Cost Over
- Overall Cost Gauge have been reduced back to 1000. (So the cost will probably work like the SEED VS series)
- No Assist (?)
- Melee, Guard, BD can all be cancelled (With.......stepping? Seems like? Maybe I interpreted this wrong, but either way, ND is back in some form, or rather....Step Cancel?)

New Units:

Well, at least, new units that are SEEN in the poster: (But of course, let's hold our horses and wait for clearer pics >_>)

- Infinite Justice (SEED DESTINY)
- Full Armor ZZ (ZZ)
- Gun-EZ (Victory)
- Either Masarao or Suwanoo (00)
- Crossbone X1 (Crossbone)
- Dragon Gundam (G)
- Forbidden (SEED)
- Astray Red Frame (SEED Astray)
- Gunner ZAKU Warrior Lunamaria (SEED DESTINY)
- Gouf Ignited (SEED DESTINY)
- LaGOWE (SEED)
- Heavyarms Custom (EW Ver) (I THINK I see that, not sure)
- Cherudim Gundam (00)

Extreme Burst:

- Essentially the new awaken system
- Activated by pressing all 3 buttons when the EX Gauge is full (So I guess assists are totally gone)
- For a certain amount of time, your unit will be powered up.
- For example: Using Extreme Burst on God = Meikyo Shisui, Extreme Burst on 00 = TRANS-AM, etc.

Extreme Action:

NEXT Dash is carried over from NEXT, so you can use it to cancel various actions, except for melee? (And I wonder if they will keep the regular BD for untransformable units?)

You can only cancel melee attacks with stepping now, instead of ND. So in a sense, Step Cancel is in, except not in the sense of the AvZ series.

The CPU battles looks to have been expanded as well............and Regnant as boss!

Dragon, Crossbone and RED FRAME make me VERY VERY HAPPY. As well as all the new additions! Good to see Next Dash lives on, as well! :D

Crossbone looks fantastic. And the overall presentation itself looks awesome, not to mention the same great gameplay that made GvGNEXT a joy to play has only been made more interesting.

Boost Related:
- BD-ing in any direction will cost you the same amount of boost. (aka, BD-ing backwards won't eat more of your boost)
- However, if you BD too much (as in, double tapping the c button repeatedly) won't get you much air time, as it will drain your boost like crazy.
- For example, the top tier units (560/530 cost units) can only manage 4 cancels before they run out of boost.
- Unlike NEXT, your BD Gauge doesn't recover in an instant. So I guess it's back to the old way, albeit it recovers faster?
- It seems like you will be able to perform an action right after you land, unlike NEXT.
- However, if you perform an action right after a landing, your boost won't recover until you stop?

Extreme Burst Related:
- Again, pressing all 3 buttons when the gauge is full will activate Extreme Burst.
- Units will special attacks during Extreme Burst can access them by pressing abc again during the burst.

00 has Raiser Sword for its special attack. METEOR Full Burst for Strike Freedom. Cherudim will deploy all of its bits.

It may be a long-ass wait until I get to control Crossbone for myself, but I'll be damned if this game probably is looking to be best Gundam game yet....

In arcades? Next month. Try asking that question again next year for the more obvious question! 8D

Me being on a cellphone...for what system is it for?

Specifically? Namco System 357, which is an arcade board that could be basically described as a PS3 in an arcade cabinet.

Since the game has no real chance of leaving Japan, the likeliness of it having a PS3 port some time in the future is high. Until then, Capcom and Bamco are more concerned with making that money in the arcades for like the next year's worth of time...

The only bad thing is that even if you DO get the game, there's still the thing of how the Extreme Vs. rigs MUST maintain a connection to Bamco's servers in order to even work. So you figure the entry fee, and then that additional cost...  -u-'

Based on the link, some suits were already mentioned but also some that weren't (Highlighted in Red). Those are:

- Hi-Nu Gundam
- Blue Destiny

So Hi-Nu continues its action-game tour de force from ACE:R (like its fellow pimps, the Crossbone Thugs n Harmony), and we get more Gundam manga love in the form of Blue Destiny. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Maybe my hopes for the likes of Gundam W: G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-Unit may still have some chance after all!  *o* *o*

As long as the US has largely an apathetic attitude towards Gundam (matched by how much Bamco seems to just as much care for trying to push Gundam in the West), I wouldn't place a lot of hope in such. Probably the only reason we got the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam games was because Koei made such a push to release it over here. I doubt Capcom (the actual makers of the Gundam Vs. series) are going to be as enthusiastic, especially since most people passed over Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam's US release back on the PS2...  8D

Any way...

Confirmed Roster: (thus far, bold being new to the series through this game)

MSG - Gundam, Acguy, Char's Gelgoog
Zeta - Zeta Gundam, Hyaku Shiki, Messala
ZZ - FA ZZ, Red Qubeley, Qubeley
CCA - Nu Gundam, Sazabi, Hi-Nu Gundam
F91 - Gundam F91, Berga Giros
V Gundam - V2 Gundam, Gun-EZ

G Gundam - God Gundam, Dragon Gundam, Master Gundam
Endless Waltz - Wing Gundam Zero Custom, Heavy Arms Custom, Tallgeese 3
Gundam X - Gundam DX, Gundam Virsago Chest Break
Turn A Gundam - Turn A Gundam, Turn X Gundam

Gundam SEED - Strike Gundam, Forbidden Gundam, LaGOWE
Gundam SEED Destiny - Strike Freedom Gundam, Infinite Justice, Destiny Gundam, Luna's ZAKU Gunner
Gundam SEED Astray - Red Frame
Gundam 00 - 00 Gundam, Cherudim Gundam, Susanowo

Gundam UC - Gundam Unicorn, Kshatriya, Sinanju
Gundam 0080 - Zaku Kai, Gundam Alex
Gundam 0083 - Gundam GP01, Gundam GP02
08th Ms Team - Ez8, Gouf Custom
MS Igloo - Hildorf, Zudah
Crossbone - Crossbone Gundam X-1
Gundam Gaiden - Gundam Blue Destiny
EX vs. OG - Extreme Gundam

This brings the total beginning roster so far to 51 MS, compared to Gundam vs Gundam with 32 MS, and GVG Next with 51.

And to think, we still may get a few more MS via either the upcoming trade shows (AM Show, TGS), and then of course, there's the possibility of time unlocks. I'm loving what I'm reading and seeing thus far!  owob

Talk about gay for us US consumers.

Sad, but true. For the most part, what can be said about the Western Gundam fan base is that a lot of it boils down to improper franchise handling on Bandai's part, which led to what fan base that was left to do a lot to adopt the "roll your own" attitude. It's doubtful that the "glory days" of Toonami+Gundam W back around the turn of the century will ever be seen again.

But hey, since this game looks to be PS3 bound, if you already have a PS3? Import-a-go-go, baby. Then it's just a thing of hoping for some truly awesome netcode that will be able to foster the growth of a scene over on this side of the globe.

Yes, indeed. Also, slight fix made to my original post, to include Heavyarms Custom, which is also a new unit, and replaces the original model from the last game.

Looking good, ain't it? Of course, the nico vids likely have the best visual quality, but you either need a nico account, or one of the many "nico-bypasses" to see the goods.

More as they come in.
