You can't even grasp the definition of Hard unless you actually 1cc'd an Arcade game, Specially shmups. Look into Cave's games, and some others like Konami, Irem, SNK, Taito, Capcom (GnG), ZUN (Touhou series) and a lot more. Go to the NSMBWii topic and find 2 videos I posted lately. Go to an Arcade mall, find a game (I prefer a shmup), beat it with 1 credit and have it on tape. Then you'll understand the word Hard and you get respected by other gamers too. </wii>

I can think of plenty of CHEAP bosses, but I can't think of any boss that is truly hard under normal circumstances. I usually have to make bosses hard by handicapping my character somehow.
I think some of the hardest boss fights -- while still remaining fair -- were Phalanx using normal Firebrand, X3 Sigma with no upgrades or special weapons, and Sera with just your buster. All without healing. [parasitic bomb] was so epic.

I had the most difficulty with X2's Serges, Zero 4's Weil, ZXA's Albert form 1 and the final boss of Frogger's adventure: the temple of the frog. (but then, I was just 7 when I got that game...)

That's probably because I suck at fighting games, though. And I play as Cham Cham all the time. I can beat her with Jubei no problem.
On the subject of bosses that should provide a challenge, but proved otherwise...
Dio Brando. I can understand beating him as Jotaro - canon and whatnot. But being able to beat him as, say, Alessi? D= That's just plain insulting. If anybody should have SNK Boss Syndrome, it should be Mr. Brando.
But then, video games =/= canon. Otherwise Shadow Dio would just walk all over Hol Horse. I'm just glad Rubber Soul doesn't fight him...I don't think I could bear the shame of being beaten by a cheap Kakyoin knock-off. Why couldn't they give him a decent power, like in the manga?

Usually if I find a boss hard it's because of some damn ranking requirement. So far as just beating the boss goes, I can't possibly post anything that compares to Vix's bullet storm from last page, but nevertheless I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet:
-Chornoforce, Hard Mode, ZX Advent.
Narrow safe zones combined with a constant time bomb, yeilds a character who is hellishly tough at ANY point in your typical Inti-crippled Hard Mode, much less having to fight him as your second or third Pseudoroid of the game.
And one other one, that actually isn't as tough as getting to him, but still memorably difficult:
-Mysterial, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Masters Final Set (Diamond version linked with the game)
They finally did it. They finally put a Choice Scarfed Kyogre on the CPU's side. Good luck.

I like making my friends play levels from Shoot the Bullet. That's always fun. They don't like playing most shooting games, but StB's 30 second levels seem to be acceptable.
How the [tornado fang] are you meant to beat the later levels in that game anyway? [parasitic bomb]'s ridiculous.

The Spaceship was the thing of nightmares for me. Do you know how many years I thought I had to beat the tank into submission in the second stage only to find out you're supposed to push it back, press the obviously placed switch in the middle, then wait for it to fall into the abyss? XD
Granted that helped me out in the long run to dodge on the spot projectiles.

Doesn't help I suck at video games either, but yeah, it's pretty much a moderately difficult game up until you get to the Space Ship, then the game is like "Okay, time to hit the after burners..." and then everything is thrown at you at once, quite literally.
I will say it again though, we need a new Startropics game, officially made, or fan made, doesn't matter, need something to rekindle it's spirit.

I've been BBQ'ed by Cackletta's Spirit, twice. in SuperStar Saga. Game's hard if you don't know what you are doing with the action commands, along with it's sequels.
Best solution is to grind, stock, and practice up on dodging attacks in button-input based games.

While this is true, I feel the need to give a special mention to Dullahan in Golden Sun 2. I can see a battle with him without summon abuse being a pain in the ass even at high level. [tornado fang]ing Charon.

Even with best armor and skills they're no pushover.

The Dark Queen from Ico is pretty unstoppable.....given you dont care to find your sword. If there were no blocks....yeah, she'd be the hardest boss ever. lol
Aside from that, Wherever the sword lands is all the same pattern, or same location each time. So she's not that bad. Just cool.
As far as bosses go...I can mention the high level monsters (might as well treat them like bosses) from DnD, but that isn't a Video Game, so ah well.
Soooo I'd nominate Sir Richard Rose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSyEoIs4BVI). Just hope that you don't have A BIT OF BAD LUCK 8D
but even then, for some people, hard can be easy. Not to mention I feel a bit depressed that Sephi from KH2 is easy to alot and I die from him a fair bit o' times before I defeat him. Same case for KH1 Sephi lol

In terms of tough bosses, I had my share of them.
I should, however, point to God Hand's bosses. Which get tougher and tougher as you progress. X(
Of course, this is in a game where minor enemies can beat you to a pulp, if you are not careful.
But despite what I mentioned, I love that game! owob

I had a bit of difficulty with Vaati in minish cap, particularly inside his hands.

I used to farm Nightmare Andariel for loads of goodies. She's probably hard if you don't have that ridiculous iceball spell.

do note that hit/dodge rates are fixed at the beginning of your turn.
also all the attacks you have that can deal semi-lasting damage to him cost most of that units energy.
