Gaming / Emotional Gaming (SPOILER WARNING?)
« on: May 15, 2010, 07:44:33 AM »
Judging by how a certain topic has gone, I felt this would be a good one to make. Have you ever played a game, and had a genuine emotional reaction? Cheered happily, cried, gotten angry, anything? If so, post your stories here!

Here's a good one of mine. When I was 10, I was playing Final Fantasy II on my trusty Super Nintendo. Yes, I know it's actually FF4, but that's besides the point. Anyways, I was at the Tower of Zot, and then Tellah sacrificed himself by casting Meteo to stop Golbez. I seriously cried. It was sad.

In a related story, upon playing FF4 DS I cried at the same scene (the voice acting made it all the more emotional) and also Palom and Porom's sacrifice after beating Cagnazzo.

Anyone else have moments like this? Remember, any emotion is acceptable in this thread!

Something brought up in another topic that I wanted to clarify here. Apparently, red characters in this series have the urge to protect or even sacrifice themselves to save that series' respective Mega Man. I just wanted to list out who and when per series.

Roll - 10 - Saving Rock
Quickman  - SAR - Blocked Shadowman's attack

X
Zero - X1 - To destroy Vile
       - X5 - When Sigma died

Zero
Zero - Z4 - Stops Weil/Vile

ZX
Giro - ZX - To save Vent
Biometal Z - ZXA - To stop the enemies at the end

DASH
???

EXE
ProtoMan.EXE - EXE2 - Held ShadowMan.EXE back so Mega Man could take him out
                   - EXE6 - To stop the Cybeast (I think... not sure)

SS
???

Please, elaborate on any incidents I may have missed here! Correct me if I'm wrong as well.

EXE / BN6 Graveyard?
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:24:26 AM »
Quick question, and forgive me if it's already been asked. Did Capcom of America literally remove the Graveyard from the game's data, or is i still accessible through some sort of code? Just wondering here.

X / Tilesets
« on: April 17, 2010, 04:38:11 AM »
I was wondering, does anyone have the tilesets for any of the SNES X games? I've scoured the intarwebs, but no luck. I was hoping someone here might have them. All I've found is maps of the stages; none of my tileset making programs work. Can anyone help?

Panguin?

Cabbit?

Weird dog-bird thing?

Any weird hybrids that you want to see, that DO NOT and probably cannot exist in nature, request them here. And maybe one of our Photoshop wizards can make it for you. Or find it for you. Have fun!

Emulation / Downloadable VG Commercials of Antiquity and Recentness
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:31:15 PM »
I'm posting this here because of the fact the site hosting these is a rom site sooo....
Code: [Select]
http://www.emuparadise.org/Commercials/
There's quite a few classic commercials here. Including some weird Rockman ones from Japan (The X6 one is particularly interesting), the Jak & Dater ones with Daxter bragging, the Ratchet & Clank ones where they test the weapons, and more. Pretty funny. And some are as old as the 70s, meaning the dawn of gaming. Soo... check them out.

As of this posting, they currently host 1847 commercials.

Emulation / Emulating Shantae
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:34:45 PM »
Well, I normally use VBA for all my game boy emulation needs, but it doesn't emulate Shantae well at all. Low framerate, missing HUD, and all. The original VisualBoy doesn't even show the sprites. So I'm stuck with this crappy third-rate emulator called Rew, but I'd prefer to use something a bit more... I don't know, good maybe? Anyone got any suggestions, or ways for Shantae to be emulated with VB/VBA?

MUSIC

I'm sure we all know at least one famous track from a video game by heart. Whether it's the theme from Mario or the Final Fantasy victory jingle, these tracks can define a game, or even a game series. The hard work of various composers is what can create the mood for a game. A happy upbeat track, a mournful slow requiem, a slow creepy ambience, or even a driving rhythm; all these help set the feeling for an area in the game, and its thanks to the composers for this.

Some famous composers are Nobuo Uematsu, of Final Fantasy fame; Yoko Shimomura, who composed the tracks for the Kingdom Hearts series and some from Super Mario RPG; Tommy Tallarico, an American who has had his music in many games; Koji Kondo, who has created the epic tracks behind the likes of Zelda and Mario; and Motoi Sakuraba, who has composed for games such as Tales of Phantasia and Golden Sun.  But there are other, lesser-known composers. A few examples of these are Yasunori Mitsuda, who composed the soundtracks for the Chrono games; Dave Wise, who created the great tracks in the Donkey Kong Country games; and Koichi Sugiyama, the composer for the Dragon Quest games.

Along with these composers are ordinary people who "remix" video game music. One of the biggest sites for these "remixers" is OverClocked ReMix, located at ocremix.org. Founded by David W. Lloyd, also known as djpretzel in 2000, the site now boasts nearly 2000 remixes (more than that counting all tracks from their official albums) and features a large community of members and remixers. Some of the remixers have even had their music in video games, such as Dain Olsen, or Beatdrop, in DDR, and Andrew Aversa, or zircon, in Super Street Fighter II HD. OCR was even contracted to make the soundtrack for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix!

Another such site is vgmix.com. While not as organized as OCR, it still boasts a ton of remixes. And some of OCR's remixers have tracks posted there. The Dwelling of Duels is also hosted at VGMix. You can find that at dod.vgmix.com. There is also a mirror for the older duels there too. There are some great tracks there too, in my humble opinion.

Video game music is something that can reach out and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, the dark into the frightening, the bright into the happy. It is something that is a vital part of the game, and without it some parts of the game may be lost. Next time, part two of my video game music article, featuring an interview with one of OCR's own. Until then, game on!

As we all know, music can affect people in more ways then simple words or sounds. Whether it's a lyrical masterpiece with words that you can directly relate to, or an instrumental piece with a driving rhythm that makes you want to move, music can reach down into our souls and speak to us. Video game music is even more emotional, because unlike normal songs that you'd hear on the radio, video game music can match specific scenes with a moody tune, or give a tropical feel to a game that takes place across a fictional Southern Pacific archipelago (if you know what game I'm talking about, have this. :cookie: ). And there are people who can take a tropical tune and remix it, to give it a mellow feel, like you're sipping a drink from a coconut shell, lounging on the beach watching the sun set over the aquatic horizon. One of these remixers is Chris Roman, known as Hemophiliac. While not as prolific on the main site, he has worked on five of OCR's 15 remixes, and also worked on their upcoming Donkey Kong Country 2 album, Serious Monkey Business, upping his ratio to six of 16. With that, he will have worked on the most albums of any remixer. I recently chatted with him, and here's the result of our interview.

Mirby: First off, what started your interest in video-game music, and remixing it?
Hemophiliac: As far as video game music interest goes... I recall being in my early teens and speaking to my cousin, saying, "I wish I could hear the music from Zelda played by a live orchestra." I always remember liking the music from games more then the stuff I'd hear on the radio. Later on in life when the p2p scene came about I discovered remixes on accident, and that path led me to finding OCR. As far as remixing it... through the site I met analoq, who ended up living around the corner from me. I got to see him work on a few things and see his projects. It seemed like something that I could try out, so I started doing that, and now I'm studying music in school and hoping to eventually make it my career.
M: That's cool. I actually agree with liking game music more than what the radio plays. Okay, any tracks you've done that you are more proud of or like more than the others?
H: Hmm... I'd have to say that the one coming on DKC2, the Lockjaw's Saga remix I feel the most proud of. I put a lot of time and effort into it.
M: Is that going to change after the next one you do?
H:  lol I have no idea. I've been working on a number of things right now. The track (called tetanus) is also kinda different for my style, so I'm proud I did something a bit different.
M: Well, if you can break out of your own style, and try something new, that's good. Pulling it off is even better. Are there any remixers you haven't collaborated with in the past that you'd like to collaborate with in the future?
H: I dunno, I've worked with a lot of people. some have actually worked others have fallen through. It all just depends on the time, and the idea.
M: Any tracks you'd like to remix in the future?
H: I already have a "backlog" so to speak.
M: Well, ones that aren't in your backlog. Ones that you would like to do after you've finished the backlogged ones.
H:  I have no idea. lol I don't plan that far ahead when it comes to this stuff; it's not that important when it comes to the priorities of life.
M: No, not really, I suppose. Do you have a favorite track from a game?
H: No.
M: Do you have a favorite composer?
H: That's a vague question.
M: As in video game music composer. e.g. Nobuo Uematsu, Dave Wise, Tommy Tallarico, etc.
H: mmmk. In that case no. Just letting you know that was vague, or too broad.
M: I understand, that's why I made it more detailed. Lastly, do you enjoy remixing?
H: Absolutely.
M: Elaborate, if you will.
H: nothing to elaborate on.
M: Well, in that case... Thank you for your time. I found this informative.

You can find Hemophiliac's page on OCR here: Artist: Hemophiliac (Chris Roman). Stay tuned for future interviews! Until then, game on!

Shooting Star / Game Character/Real Life Correlations
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:58:36 PM »
Basically, I've been thinking about character associations in the games and the relation to star/constellation location and myths. Here is what I've found.

Star Force 1
In the game, Cepheus, King of Planet FM, uses the weapon Andromeda. In mythology, Cepheus, King of Aethiopia, was the father of Andromeda.

In game, the three satellite admins are Dragon Sky (Draco), Pegasus Magic (Pegasus), and Leo Kingdom (Leo). If you look at a star chart, Pegasus is directly opposite Leo, and Draco is in between the two.

In mythology, Pegasus was ridden by Perseus to save Andromeda. The constellation Perseus, coincidentally, is directly opposite Draco in the night sky.

Star Force 2
In the game, Altair and Vega were lovers. Altair dies in a war, fueling Vega's rage. In the sky, Altair and Vega are two points of the Summer Triangle, the third being Deneb.

Vega wants to become a god in the game. The star Vega is the fifth brightest in the night sky. In 12,000-14,000 years, it will also become the new North Star.

Star Force 3
In game, Virgo and Corvus are two criminals from Planet FM. In the sky, the constellations Virgo and Corvus are celestial neighbors.

Spica is the brightest star in the constellation Virgo, and is also the name of the mall in game.

In game, Sirius tries to devour Planet FM with his black hole. The star Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, and might end up as a black hole after it dies.

Feel free to correct me on game info, if I was wrong. I brought this up because it's cool to see that Capcom did their homework, and star/constellation relationships are matched in-game. Thoughts?

OHKO a boss! It's possible!

I OHKO'd Queen Ophiuca, so it can be done.

OHKO a boss!

Say which one, and say how (what card you used, and panel bonuses if any).

No GameShark or Action Replay codes may be used in attempting this challenge. Wave Cards (or whatever they're called) may be used for zenny and/or cards.

Boss: QueenOphiuca
Card: BreakTimeBomb

Like that, okay?

Shooting Star / The Truth About Noise
« on: August 06, 2009, 07:36:46 PM »
Okay, so I'm watching the History Channel the other night, and they're talking about futuristic weaponry. It was kinda cool. Then they start talking about microwaves. They said that a missile packed with microwaves could destroy all technology in America. That got me to thinking...

Noise, in large enough amounts, can destroy technology, right? Granted, emitted noise is only in minuscule amounts, not enough to do anything, really. But look at the Jamming that King did. That did some damage, because anyone caught in the noise could've died due to radiation or something. And Meteor G is a massive conglomeration of Noise. If that collided with Earth, 80% of all life, and all technology, would perish. Judging from what I heard, if a meteor made solely of microwaves collided with Earth, the result would probably be the same. And our cell phones and stuff emit radiation in minuscule amounts. And in the future, the era of Star Force, almost everything is endowed with technological enhancements, thus it emits radiation. Since Noise and Microwaves (a wave on the electromagnetic, or EM, spectrum) have the same properties, or so it seems, it leads me to believe that Noise is microwave radiation left unchecked. And since Mega Man is this series is an EM being, it makes sense that he can pulse into Noise (Microwave) waves. Pardon the redundancy.

tl;dr Noise=Microwave radiation.

Discuss.

Off The Wall / The Gender Mysterious Thread (Finally Revived)
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:42:09 PM »
How long ago was the crash? And I'm the one to recreate this thread? Wow. Anyways, the rules, as best as I can remember them, are characters that are traps or reverse traps. Or something like that. Maybe someone can help me out on that. Here are some examples of "Gender Mysterious" characters, starting with the character that made me think of doing this in the first place.

Lucius from Fire Emblem. Sure, he's male, but he looks a lot like a chick!

Viddy Narcy, the quintessential "Gender Mysterious" character. In his own words, he "transcends gender"

Gogo, from Final Fantasy V and VI (6 and 5 in this order, BTW). What is it?

Just to throw Quina Quen in too. Gender? Who knows!

Come on with your pics! I want to see them! And if someone has the rules from the old topic, or knows them, please post them, or if you have the power, edit my post to add them.

Gaming / The Boktai Thread
« on: November 29, 2008, 01:19:55 AM »
There's a thread for every other series, why not have one for this one? Mainly, I need help on Shinbok. First off, there's a room I can't seem to enter in Pirate Island. It's next to the room with the Warp Magic Square, but I can't find an entrance. And how do I find Snake? I read you need a Red Mushroom, and to use it in the Ancient Tree, but I can't find one of those. Any help at all for me?

Original / Remix of everyone's favorite Rockman BGM
« on: November 09, 2008, 09:51:57 PM »
I was browsing the October results of the Dwelling of Duels contest, and third place was earned by Sixto Sounds, with his remix of Wily Stage 1 from MM2. This is Sixto's longest track at 4:46. His previous longest track was Obsession Nocturnal, a remix of Obsession from Seiken Desetsu 3, which was 4:23, and was released in 2007. It is fairly epic, if I do say so myself. Here's the link.
