Gaming / Factorio - cool game about automating & production lines
« on: August 05, 2014, 08:55:29 PM »
Factorio trailer

If you've enjoyed mods for Minecraft that add machinery, or trying to perfectly set up stockpiles and workshops in Dwarf Fortress, this game might be your new crack.

It's currently in alpha, planning to release in summer 2015 but already has a simple campaign that introduces the concepts, and I've spent the last two days in free play mode where the goal is to produce a rocket defense to defend any would-be colonists (game ends without any colonists actually landing mind), so even there you have a goal rather than pure sandboxery. Highly recommend.

I forgot to say, there's a free demo available with the first three campaign levels:

X / X6's difficulty like Castlevania's?
« on: April 27, 2013, 02:23:15 PM »
I think we've all seen the Sequelitis episode where egoraptor talks about the difficulty in CV1 being a good thing, and how it makes you stop and think rather than just blow through enemies the moment they show up on your screen.

It occurred to me that X6 might have a similar thing going on, this being why it's appreciated by a number of us here on RPM.

There's different kinds of difficulty, good and bad. Bad ones would be making it literally impossible to avoid taking damage, or just increasing enemy stats so you have to wail on them forever without really being different from early game enemies, and I feel that for the most part X6 avoids these.

All in all, it's unforgiving, unlike previous mega games, but fair and satisfying.

I believe Demon's Souls would also be relevant but I have yet to get around to playing any game in that series, so can't say for sure.

Gaming / Abstract vs game idea
« on: February 05, 2013, 02:12:46 PM »
posting for the hell of it...

So let's start with a blank white canvas. Then, a red circle representing player one, and a blue circle for P2, some distance away from each other.

The basic mechanic is that they are constantly firing projectiles directly at each other, about 2 per second all bip-bip-bip-bip-bip or whatnot, and they cancel each other out. If you get hit you lose, of course.

Well, if that was it, it'd be an eternal stalemate, looking vaguely like a beam duel from DBZ or Harry Potter... so let's add the fact that you can fire shots not aimed directly at the other guy by clicking at an angle away from the "beam". But in doing so, the middle of the "beam" will get closer to you... And anyway, since we haven't added movement mechanics yet there'd be no point to this - so let's make the projectiles always home in on your enemy!

And I do mean always.

The result is that you can fling shots away from yourself and they will hit your enemy unless he "parries" them with a projectile of his own - which he has to do to not get hit. So the middle of the beam would stabilize again if you both manage to parry each other's attacks.

Much more can be done of course, like adding movement, but at this point I want to ask if it sounds workable... or perhaps like something that already exists?

Gaming / You are to come up with worlds for a Mario game
« on: September 27, 2012, 08:48:47 PM »
Someone decided to put you in charge today, and now's your chance to show off your mad creative skills (or not). Let's assume it's a modern game like NSMBWii(U) so you can use trickier things, like physics...

For example... a metal world (suitably light for a mario game ofc), featuring pistons and conveyor belts that move you about (or try to get you dead), factory pipes that spit out quirky robots, and a Koopa that grabs a metal cap and follows you through the level no matter how much you hop/bop him.

X / Does higher intelligence convey a resistance to the virus?
« on: May 23, 2012, 07:08:24 PM »
Just a random thought.
  • Sigma was extremely infected of course, but it was directly from the source.
  • Doppler freed himself of it, though it took being brought to the brink of death.
  • Colonel and General weren't made to be scientists, but they were both special reploids (and leaders would need to be pretty smart), and IIRC they remained free from infection unlike their subordinates.
  • Signas was said to be resistant, IIRC? Remained leader of the Hunters for a long time too.
  • Gate was infected, but again directly from the source.
  • Haven't played X7, don't know about Red.

Gaming / Random idea: Chrono Trigger battle system
« on: April 23, 2012, 12:13:05 PM »
After playing Valkyrie Profile and realizing just how obsolete menu-based combat is, I've been thinking about gameplay in RPGs a bit.

Chrono Trigger had a good base with the positions affecting if your techs hit enemies, or them hitting you, but it doesn't help much in practice since you have no control of your dudes. So it's not much more mentally stimulating than the usual "dudes standing on opposing sides of the field and taking turns hitting each other", with little skill or thought involved.
This can be a good thing for players who aren't looking for an adrenaline rush, and want to take their time deciding what to use, but this doesn't need to be actually fast-paced despite what it might sound like.

So. Controlling your dudes:

Each character in battle is controlled by a specific face button (ABXY), which you can set up in menus etc. Now, the way it works is, while holding XY for Chrono and Lucca or what have you, nothing happens unless you press another button:
D-pad: dodge/move around (short hop; items like say Winged Boots could affect speed/distance)
R: attack (pauses to let you choose enemy; can attack towards enemies that are currently out of range in case you want to get a pre-emptive hit on enemies that are approaching you)
L: tech (pauses to let you choose; techs are arranged in a 5x5 or whatever square, and the cursor starts in the middle, so you can choose quickly)
...And since we have 4 buttons but only 3 dudes, the remaining one is used for blocking - the closer your pressing the button is to the enemy hitting you, the less damage you take.

The ATB gauge would still be used: so you don't just spam attack with your guys, you can't attack unless it's full, and it's emptied when you do so.

Start would be used for stuff that affects the whole party like running away, or mapping characters to buttons.

So... does that seem like it could be fun and interesting?

Gaming / Fortune Summoners

I vaguely recall you guys liking Recettear so figured this was worth bringing up. Though it's not related, except for being translated by the same guys and being about kawaii anime girls having even more kawaii adventures.

It's a platformer action RPG; you cut and magic your way through dungeons, solving puzzles, gaining xp and items etc. There's a party system that lets you customize how your (extremely kawaii) friends act in combat, or you can just control them directly.

I liked what I saw in the demo. Combat was tricky to do perfectly but not overly punishing, though you do get more healing items than you really need if you take care to explore. Items are expensive and XP gain slow, but the equipment and levels make a big difference, so it's a "big jumps infrequently" sort of deal.

If you can get over such a sickeningly sweet tone as Recettear had, definitely give it a try.

Fan Creations / Align's "Tonality Project"
« on: November 06, 2011, 09:47:21 PM »
If you've noticed that some songs segue well into each other despite being totally unrelated, chances are you're hearing two songs with the same tonality.

I discovered that using a certain winamp plugin, I can change the tonality of songs at will, and so I went and changed all of them (well, all songs in a few given soundtracks) to have the same tonality so there'd be no jarring feeling when scrolling through the soundtrack.

And now, you can hear it too!

Megaman X8

If you'd like to hear what a specific soundtrack would be like with this, ask away. I've already done (but not uploaded) these (so they would get uploaded fastest):
Bastion, Bionic Commando (3D), Castlevania - Judgement, Deus Ex (original & Human Revolution), Ghost Trick, Grandia, Marvel vs Capcom 1 & 3, X-Men - Children of the Atom, Megaman X5 & 8, Okamiden, (Super) Street Fighter IV, Suikoden II, Trine, UFO: Aftershock

I have played it and it's pretty great. The stages have a well-balanced difficulty, designed for the bot you play as but occasionally greatly assisted by using one of the others.
It's pretty short since there's no wily castle or what have you, but definitely worth a playthrough of the 8 stages.

Recently read a story where people got to make 2 (not 3) wishes, and they would be granted one first, then two years later the other, and was thinking about all sorts of wishes, so had this idea. It wasn't actually about the triforce pieces, just what they represented, but I figured I'd get the comparison out of the way immediately...

These would be beyond what any human has, so if you're thinking "oh i'll get courage then power because i'm pretty clever already", think again!

They're left intentionally vague, but let's assume it's a benevolent genie granting them, so as to not get distracted by "but if i wish for power, will that result in being struck down by lightning because it contains electrical power?!"...

Off The Wall / CERN results showing faster than light neutrino

Puzzling results from Cern, home of the LHC, have confounded physicists - because it appears subatomic particles have exceeded the speed of light.

The result - which threatens to upend a century of physics - will be put online for scrutiny by other scientists.

"We tried to find all possible explanations for this," said report author Antonio Ereditato of the Opera collaboration.

"We wanted to find a mistake - trivial mistakes, more complicated mistakes, or nasty effects - and we didn't," he told BBC News.

"When you don't find anything, then you say 'Well, now I'm forced to go out and ask the community to scrutinise this.'"
