Title: Shmup Favorites.
Post by: Sparky on December 12, 2008, 12:46:44 AM
Made this because I always saw shmup and run 'n gun as sister genres.

Anywho, mine are mainly Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings and Strikers 1945. Aero Fighters is a favorite not only becuase it's my first shmup, but the outrageous pilots. Should I play as the dolphin or the baby? :V

Ikaruga.

Pop'n Twinbee.

Parodius was fun.

Axelay, even if just for the music.

And I bet nobody of you guys/gals remembers Biohazard. That's NOT Resident Evil.

Another crazy-arse genre. But I actually have favorites, here:

Soldier Blade
Raiden II

I don't like bullet hells.

And I'd say Radiant Silvergun but I never played that. Seems awesome though. Same for Einhänder.

Nya, this might take a LONG time for me to put a list together, so wait for the bright tomorrow~

Right now, I add Giga Wing, for the most over-explosive, screen-covering, ridiculous score-counting shmup game from Capcom in like ever. >U<

Star Fox 64, definitely... ;)

I'm looking for Ikaruga since forever. That thing looks like sheer perfection.

Stupid rare game.

Ikaruga... I still have to find that game myself. Also, Star Fox 64 is godly. GODLY. 0v0

I know I'm a very mainstream gamer, don't rub it in. XD

My old favorite is Raiden.

Anyone knows that one game with a lot of beehives and honeycombs as the points? That looks hella interesting.

There's a sealed GC Ikaruga available on my local Ebay-esque service, but the moron bought the EU version... >_<

I swear to God, Ikaruga represents like 50% of my reasons to finally get a 360.

GIGAWING, for the highest highscores in the multiverse!

What's the world record? Let's consult Wikipedia:

Quote
The reported world record score for Giga Wing is 291,252,468,839,040 points[1]; the score multiplier mechanic entails a lower limit to the average score for each enemy of many thousands or several millions of points, and end of level bonuses are scaled accordingly.

Although the PS2 did beat it.

The PS2 beat everything. Even the Gameboy. The only thing that has chances to come close is the DS.

Oh, and if Star Fox does indeed count, then Star Fox 64 and Star Fox SNES are right on my list.  Specially the music for Star Fox SNES.  One of my favorite game soundtracks ever!

The PS2 beat everything. Even the Gameboy. The only thing that has chances to come close is the DS.

And it's gotta have about three more "Killer App" games to beat the PS2. First party or otherwise.
Also some collections near the end of its lifecycle.

Late reply is late but Nintendo 64 = Super Nintendo. There. I said it. XD

Besides, they both represent Nintendo's greatest creative peak.

I leave for a little while and this place is turned into a console war?

Anywho, I've been getting into Raiden lately. The different powerup system that I'm not used to intrigues me.

Console wars are always fun until someone gets too riled up by them. Meanwhile, on a scale of 1 - 5 how are ya finding it so far?

I don't play much in this genre, so I'll just go for the old reliable: Star Fox 64 (or Lylat Wars, as it was bizzarely re-named in Europe).

My favorite is Touhou.
Others that I like are Tyrian (OpenTyrian on DS!), Raiden, Raptor, 19xx, Nanostray.
Now I have to try Giga Wing too. I love getting ridiculously high scores 8D
