It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
With the new game announcements
And everyone's prouncement "E3 is HERE!"
It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
It's the fap-faptastic weekend of all
With those company greetings as well as competing,
With charts for you all
It's the fap-faptastic weekend of all

There'll be lots of liveblogging
Sad fanboyish ogling
And games that will make you say "Whoa"
There'll be some disappointment
And people who will vent how
E3 kicked ass long ago

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
There'll be some gamers gloating
And minds will be floating
When all the crowds cheer.
It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

There'll be lots of liveblogging
Sad fanboyish ogling
And games that will make you say "Whoa"
There'll be some disappointment
And people who will vent how
E3 kicked ass long ago

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
There'll be some gamers gloating
And minds will be floating
When all the crowds cheer.
It's The Most Wonderful Time
It's The Most Wonderful Time
It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

So RPM, I heard you liked video games. I heard you like hearing about the latest and greatest things coming from all sides of the globe in a giant audio visual cacophony the likes of which can only happen once per year. I heard you like to get hype, go crazy and most importantly have fun as all the big guys from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sega, Square, Capcom, Activision, EA, Konami, Atlus and countless others debut their wares and give us a glimpse into the future of this "little" hobby of ours. Well guys, with literally less than a day left until the beginning of this event, I think it's safe to say that E3 @ RPM is go. Welcome to the discussion thread and lounge for what may be the most interesting Electronic Entertainment Expo we've had in years. With two massive hardware launches in the wings, it's safe to say that there will be tons of material to talk about and speculate upon so for this incarnation of the lounge thread, I'd like to ask for help from both the members and mods of RPM to help fill in the massive amount of info that will be coming in from all sides while I try and keep this post up to date and organized for those of us who might have obligations that keep them from being constantly updated.

Finally, we know that for whatever reason, there can be some instances where folks let this season of awesome over hype themselves. This can also lead to really bad calls in judgement. I will only ask that before you think about doing something stupid or potentially stupid, heed these rules:

No flaming, no trolling, no psuedo trolling, no fanboy agendas, and no riling up folks. It'd be best if you all just kept whatever thoughts you had along those lines to yourself.

With that all said, kick back, relax and have fun with the rest of RPM!

You know what's crazy about the Round Cactus stuff to me? Initially, I wrote it all the hell off just because I didn't want to believe in anything and let E3 come and wow me. Now though, this guy might just be the only person bringing the extra dosage of nitro needed to make the hype train interstellar at this point. XD

Nah, looks like I'm out like always.
Just saying in advance, that i'm looking forward to seeing the highlights tomorrow, Jer.

Nintendo's always the one to get my attention. The whole name thing will probably wear off like the Wii did, but I'm still going to be calling their new hardware Café for a good while.
And as much as Sony is worse for wear at the moment, i'm definitely interested in seeing more of Wipeout and Twisted Metal.

tl;dr

New system called "Current" now.
SMW3!!! 0v0
Smash Bros 4, Mario Kart~ <3
Yet ANOTHER Kid Icarus! owo
Another DKC game! ^^
Contra, Castlevania, Gradius~ <3
A Snatcher look-a-like game! O:[/spoiler]

By the way, Round Cactus was right about the 3DS specs and predictions a year back, so most of these could be true too. And people working at ESRB has been leaking information too. ^^;
Armored Core on Nintendo?  INCONCEIVABLE!

Mario World 3 with Yoshi as your main non-pipe distance travel (basically having the importance of Epona in Twilight Princess) sounds all kinds of frikkin' sweet.

Gotta have a new Smash, and I *STILL* miss my Mewtwo...

The "jump in" idea for their online setup sounds sweet, as does the Pokemon RPG.

The "hold off on holiday release" incentive concerns me.  It seems like Nintendo did that for the 3DS launch and it just bit everyone in the rear.  But, we'll see.  If it means their games have time for an extra bit of polish, then any day of the year works just as well.

Nintendo: Server Breached, No Data Lost (http://www.npr.org/2011/06/05/136972043/nintendo-server-breached-no-data-lost?ft=1&f=1001)

Quote
Nintendo was targeted in a recent online data attack, but no personal or company information was lost, the Japanese maker of the Wii game console said Sunday.

The server of an affiliate of Nintendo Co.'s U.S. unit was accessed unlawfully a few weeks ago, but there was no damage, company spokesman Ken Toyoda said.

"There were no third-party victims," Toyoda said, while declining to elaborate. "But it is a fact there was some kind of possible hacking attack."

The damage from what could be a recent spate of such data breaches targeting big-name brands was more serious at rival Sony Corp.

Sony has said massive personal information, including email addresses, names and birth dates, and involving more than 100 million users, is suspected of having been stolen after security was compromised in April for its network service for the PlayStation 3 game machine, for other online services and, in the past week, from Sony Pictures' website.

It is still unclear who is behind the attacks at Sony or Nintendo, based in Kyoto.
Hackers calling themselves Lulz Security, a reference to the Internetspeak for "laugh out loud," have recently boasted of compromising more than 1 million users' personal information.

Tokyo-based Sony has said it is strengthening security measures. It has contacted the FBI and other authorities for an investigation into the cyber attacks.

At times like these I'm glad Nintendo isn't moronic enough to link your credit card to your gaming account.

Well, that was only a partial reason the GO failed, but yeah I doubt they do it again.

Looks real to me, but at the same time the level design looks a little cluttered/sloppy. Can't quite put my finger on it.

It looks bland, is what it looks like. Not exactly something Nintendo is known for, so if it's real it better be early concept stages.

More rumors.

Could ‘Beem’ be Project Café’s real name? (http://wii2blog.com/could-beem-be-project-cafes-real-name/)
Not sure if I like that name to be honest. :\

But then again, Im still wishing the Wii was named "Revolution" because it just sounds cool. So don't mind me.

New Smash bros? that would be pretty sweet.

MAYBE WE CAN GET MEGA MAN THIS TIME.

Who am i kidding. it's never gonna happen.

They shouldn't talk too much about it. Offer an apology, show how you're beefing up security, and perhaps offer more apology gifts. Do your best to get the consumer's trust back and show off all the brand new, cool stuff coming out. Also, please don't charge too much for the NGP/PSP2

New Mario Kart (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2011/03/mario_kart/index.html) is looking sweet.  You can mix-and-match car parts, including body, wheels, and hang-glider (I have GOT to get me one of those for N64 Royal Raceway, who's with me?!).

Love seeing Boom Boom in SM3DS.

IGN's blog is live.  Roundtable seems to be running late.

In all the new hardware talk I sincerely hope that NoA hasn't forgotten about that Fire Emblem game they left untranslated.  By now that's probably wishful thinking, though... O:<

EDITS: Oh yeah, there is a Gamespot blog:

Seems you have to manually refresh that one, though (or at least I did at first...).

So, the basic jist of things:

-Bunch of awesome games we already knew about.
-Zelda Skyward Sword includes an alternate dimension where you're swordless.  And, as expected, your sword's spirit (Phi) is your "navigator" in the game.  Much more overworld puzzles in this one, calling for an improved map system.
-Luigi's Mansion 2 is happening because...Miyamoto wanted to.  It's coming early 2012.
-Mario 3DS includes a Zelda-tribute stage.  Top-down view with Mario leaping towards the camera, lighting torches with fireballs, and dodging ye olde moving spike blocks.
-3DS Tanooki Suit does not fly.  Apparently that was too difficult to do on a small 3D screen (I smell the "we couldn't program Peach's dress" level of BS; can't they just say they wanted to make stages that aren't so easily broken?).  They only decided to have Mario fly back in SMB3 after seeing how good the fluttering motion looked.
-Pikmin 3 is coming to Wii U, and Miyamoto apparently wasn't supposed to talk about it. XD It *WAS* a Wii project, but Miyamoto felt the U's controller was a perfect fit for it.
-Vitality Sensor doesn't give consistent enough results for market yet, but they're still working on it.

Dragon's Crown is a new 2D Action RPG from Vanillaware, the developer that's also working on PSP's Grand Knights History for Marvelous Entertainment. Ignition is handling the worldwide publishing on this one. The official site says that it's the second Japan-produced title from Ignition (the first was El Shaddai).

Although the game appeared in Sony's PS Vita trailer reel, the official site reveals it to be in development for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The game will see release in Spring 2012 and features support for 1 to 4 players.

George Kamitani is directing the game. Ignition's Kashow Oda is serving as producer.

As detailed at the official site, Dragon's Crown offers "red-hot multiplayer 2D action." Up to four players can team up via online play to work through dungeons, clearing quests and progressing through the game's story.

The lets players build up their character as they collect items, treasure and weapons from the dungeons. You'll need to build up your character to face off agains the screen-filling dragons.

The official site isn't totally clear about this, but it seems that the game's PS3 and Vita version will have cross console play. The official site says "Up to four players work together via PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita."

uuuuuuuuuWiiiiU
Alright, I missed the Nintendo conference. Only just seeing the highlights now, and I'm very happy with... pretty much all of it. Wii U looks great, I can definitely see myself upgrading if given the chance even if the new control is a bit gimped. And even if Nintendo themselves isn't doing some of their flagship franchise titles on 3DS themselves (Mario Kart 3DS in partnership with Retro, Luigi's Mansion 2 by Next Level Games), I'm still impressed by the quality of the studios that are doing them, nor can I argue with the WiiU's lineup either! owob

On another note, seeing Capcom's Asura's Wrath; HOLY FU-

But, even if E3 is amazing and mindblowing, the markup in Australia (1 (http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/06/eb-listing-nintendos-wii-u-at-599-95/), 2 (http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/06/eb-estimating-the-playstation-vita-price-at-338/)) is just the opposite. Even with the strong $AUD, us folks here are still (STILL) suffering from inane markup. Excuse me in advance if I say that I'm probably going to be sitting on the sidelines whenever any of this comes out. I still don't have a 3DS yet, either.

I import everything from America nowadays~ 8D So if the price in America is good I'm usually happy \o/ Unfortunately not everything is region free. Also the 3DS is expensive and I was waiting to see how the Vita would fair, so I don't have one yet either =O Don't think importing a Wii U would be the smartest thing though.

Anyway games here are stupid expensive~~ Most of my newer DS games are imports too >3

You know what I think I'm going to do? I'm gonna do more one off posts like the info post for Dragon's Crown and call them "Jelly's Highlights". Tat way we can get some exposure for games that have gone under the radar at E3. On another note, anyone think it's awesome that both Rayman Origins and a Kamitani game both got announced/showcased somewhat prominently at E3 of all places? :)

Info on the Aliens: Colonial Marines game for the Wii U (http://kotaku.com/5810010/three-amazing-things-youll-do-with-aliens-colonial-marines-on-the-wii-u)

And I quote...

Quote
The device will, at times, become the game's motion tracker, a device in the fiction of the Alien universe that can track the location of enemies and friendlies by their motion. Pitchford explained that players may be asked to sweep their controller around them, looking for approaching enemies, which will show up as blips on the display of the controller.

As the hugest fans of Aliens, I cannot stress to you how [tornado fang]ing awesome this idea is and why I think the Wii U controller is going to be awesome.

From what I've read about Wii U on GameSpot yesterday (right here (http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6317703/nintendo-wii-u-everything-you-need-to-know)) has already gotten me stoked for it's release. Can't wait for a new Super Smash Bros. and Skyward Sword finally in 1080p HD! >w< But I gotta wonder, I can bring stuff from my Wii into Wii U (user accounts, games I bought / downloaded, Miis, etc) and will it be backwards compatible with Wii and GameCube games?

Any news on the Devil May Cry Collection?

I think you should keep the original Wii (or the original Gamecube), so you can play Gamecube games on it.
The WiiU is able to play original Wii games fine tho, as it was mentioned in the specs. ^^;

What Sakurai hopes to do is have the 3DS version of Smash Bros. allow players to build up their character through battle and rewards, then take their custom character to the Wii U version to face off against everyone. He feels it could be nice if they can make the "personal" portable space and the stadium-like "public" console space mesh together.

Sounds nifty actually!

Some hints from the article.

Quote
Making a portable version had its appeal for him, as they'd be able to do a number of new things. At the same time, there would be limits, as they'd be handicapped in some areas when it comes to offering the usual enjoyment areas of Smash Bros.

Specifically, Sakurai feels that a portable system makes the game a more "individual" experience in that, compared to a console, it's easier to make players attached to the data that they've built up and collected. The fact that you're carrying the hardware with you makes for a more personal experience.

The difficulty here is that the current Smash Bros. games haven't relied on rewards, collecting money or raising your character's level. There's no element of gaining experience to make your character stronger, Iwata noted.

Iwata summed it the basic idea nicely: players would spend time on the 3DS version, building up their character and collecting stuff, then show off their skills on the Wii U version.

Sakurai noted that as the Wii U is an HD system, this version could offer 60 frames per second visuals, high quality graphics, dynamic effects, and smooth character movements.

While it is important to have both versions of the game be enjoyable on their own, Sakurai feels that connectivity between the two versions will make the experience even more enjoyable.

Closing off the little section offering vague hints about the new Smash Bros. games, Sakurai said that his aim with the 3DS version is to offer players a slightly different experience from conventional Smash Bros. games. He believes that there is merit in having skilled and unskilled players play together, so one emphasis will be on elements of players helping one-another.

For the programmers, the difficulty is in making two games at once. Sakurai wants to place a focus on smoothly making the basic systems. They will first begin by porting the basic gameplay systems of Smash Bros. X to 3DS and Wii U.

Smash Bros. DX = Melee
Smash Bros. X = Brawl

I find it interesting to read that Sakurai personally was responsible for balancing characters in Brawl.  Did he not let himself revisit older characters after doing the newer ones?  Because seriously, look at Bowser, look at any other heavyweight, and...what were you thinking?!

Sound the alarm,

Capcom character possible in the next SSB

http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/117/1174797p1.html

Quote
During IGN's interview with Masahiro Sakurai, the legendary designer behind the Super Smash Bros. titles and the inventor of Kirby, we asked him about the possibility of a Capcom character crossing over into the next Super Smash Bros., which is coming to both 3DS and Wii U. Here's what he had to say:

"I can't say that it's entirely out of the realm of possibility that some Capcom character could appear in the next Smash Bros. The big problem, though, comes from the idea of trying to get characters from a completely different universe to fit with the style that has been dictated by Nintendo's characters in a fighting game.

"In fact, I actually think it's a miracle that we got Smash Bros. and all the Nintendo characters to work together in the first place. Especially when you bring Pokemon into the mix and a lot of the complications that are caused by that being an almost completely different entity on its own, it's really something. So this is something that obviously will come up more as we get started on the new Smash Bros. development, but keeping those things in mind I think is important."

Development on the title hasn't begun yet, but it's encouraging that Mr. Sakurai sees the biggest hurdle as one of ensuring a good fit, as opposed to other potential complications. Given that both Solid Snake and Sonic appeared in Brawl, a classic Capcom character or two could definitely work in the new title.

We also asked Mr. Sakurai whether, looking back at Brawl and Melee, there were any things that he wasn't able to include - but really wanted to - that he could potentially put into the new title? He told is that: "There were actually a lot of things, but perhaps that's something to be talked about when we get closer to discussing that game in more detail."

Guess we'll have to wait and see. We'll have our full interview with Mr. Sakurai up next week, so stay tuned.

Dont see how this is a problem. If Solid Snake can fit in Brawl, a Capcom character can too. Although Snake in brawl obviously wasnt exactly taking himself seriously.

MEGA MAN PLEEEEEEEASE CAPCOM.

Watch the character not be Mega Man but like Street Fighter's Ryu or something.

Remind me to get on that over the weekend...

Sound the alarm,

Capcom character possible in the next SSB

http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/117/1174797p1.html

Pretty telling that, in a choice of 10 characters, Mega Man dominates with well over 50% of the votes.

It's gonna be Zero.
Just watch.

I loved using Zero in Tatsu and MvC, but they've milked him one too many times already. Not really understanding why they continue to use him. I mean, Classic Megaman is another fan fav and would be hella awesome to play as. Why not use him?

There's one benefit of having him in this though. Unlike Tatsu and MvC's style of playing, SSB's battle system is obviously completely different from the traditional "combo based" Cappy fighting series. It might be a fresh feel for him. Maybe having an "arcady" Zero to whack opponents around with wouldn't be so bad...

Any news on Dream Drop Distance?

Nope. And i'm getting more and more impatient.

But when the time does come for new KH info/scans/vids, Squeenix usually delivers well.

Nope, Wii Remote+ is the upgraded Wii Remote, with Motion Plus inside. It's only just been put in the standard Wii package recently.
I was asking since even though it might be like with the Wii and past accessories will come later, they actually did make a lot of fuss on Wii Remotes in relation to the WiiU.

That would be insanely epic...  Despite owning 4 remotes already I'd STILL have to get that.  XD

You know, I hate to say this, but I found Nintendo's show a bit of a letdown.  New hardware unveil is nice and all, but when all was said and done, I'm largely now excited about the exact same games I was already excited for (Mario, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, Star Fox, Zelda).  An impressive list, sure, but I've known about all of them since GDC or earlier.  I was hoping for something new beyond just Luigi's Mansion 2.

They have no definitive "flagship" Wii U title.  The Zelda video would have been it, EASILY, but it's a "tech demo", and we all remember what happend with the Gamecube in that department.  Other than that it was just Mii games.  And NSMBMii was basically just rubbing salt in the wound of anyone who had other Mario characters they wished had made the roster (Wario and Peach being the popular ones).

And why was Ubisoft the only 3rd party at their 3rd Party Roundtable?  Ubisoft was already in on Wii and 3DS launches in full force, anyone with a brain stem could have told us they'd be there for Wii U.  And they're among the top 3 counter-points that come to mind when people speak of 3rd party woes with the Wii (the other two being Capcom and Sega).  If Nintendo wants to show that they're being more 3rd-party-friendly, that wasn't the way to do it.

I am thankful for the fact that the Wii wasn't completely forgotten.  Mario Party 9 and Fortune Street give us something other than Skyward Sword (looking awesome, as ever) to look forward to.  The latter is pretty awesome since it's a first for english release.  But then that raises questions as to other Wii/DS games that are still not seeing translation.

To be fair, there's plenty from Nintendo's camp to look forward to.  It's just that we knew about most of it already.

Why is everybody getting so bent out of shape about "NINTENDO DIDN'T ANNOUNCE ANY GAMES FOR THE NEW SYSTEM!"?  It's not coming out until after next year's E3.

That said, yes, it was a very weak showing from Nintendo overall.

Agreed on all counts.  I don't think they "lost" the show to either Sony or MS by any means (MS was weak and as I understand it the same "we already knew this" complaint applies to Sony).  They just lacked that definitive "holy crap" moment (again, Zelda U would be it if it wasn't a tech demo).

Don't know why people feel it might cost $250. Think about it, a new powerful next-gen console with the same pricing as their handheld? I don't think so.

$300 - $350 seems much more believable.

Seems like it.  On the other hand, Nintendo is under some heavy pressure right now in terms of pricing.  Their new console is seen as competing with much older systems, and with the low-end Vita matching the 3DS, they're liable to find themselves in a tight spot.

I'm still inclined to agree with you, though.  I think $300 is a fair estimate.

I'd agree if Smash Bros. was shown, but it wasn't, it was merely announced.  We got some early concepts/goals from an interview, but those can change radically over the course of development, which has not started.  It's hard to get that excited when nothing's really been set in stone yet.  We all knew that Smash on Nintendo's next console was inevitable, and a handheld version's been in constant demand ever since Brawl.

Now if they were to tell me that Mewtwo was in it, that'd be a different story. 8D

I don't tend to subscribe to the competitive aspect of the conferences against each other. I usually judge on what was shown to their respective fan base as well as how their product was presented. In that sense, IMO Sony & Nintendo both did a really good job, and Microsoft's was terrible. The presentation of those Kinect games were abysmal, long, and painful to watch, and I'm not even a hardcore MSoft fan.

Both Sony & Nintendo showed what they needed to show.

Seems like it.  On the other hand, Nintendo is under some heavy pressure right now in terms of pricing.  Their new console is seen as competing with much older systems, and with the low-end Vita matching the 3DS, they're liable to find themselves in a tight spot.

I disagree. I think Nintendo is fine in terms of pricing, both with the Wii U and the 3DS. All people are waiting for to buy the 3DS are really good games (I was waiting for a Zelda bundle, but alas), and Nintendo showed a good portion of the gems that are coming. Plus, Sony's believably much worse in terms of finances than Nintendo right now, to the point where they had no choice but to make it $250 just to compete. But if Sony doesn't deliver good games in the first year, then I just don't know. I want the PSVita to do well.

By the time the Wii U comes out, the 3DS will have seen at least one price drop. $250 for a Wii U would be more reasonable compared to a <$200 3DS. But yeah, I'd guess it will go for $300. And the PS4 and Xbox720 will be $400 at the very least.
