I know the battle trick.

Attack > Evade > Attack (should drain at least three HP, as you'll attack anyway after evading), then catch it. Works every time.

By lord, don't ever play hard mode. Bosses WILL murder you, they take a good chunk of HP from your bar in that mode if yer not careful.
