During an interview with Game Informer, Shigeru Miyamoto was asked several "burning" questions about the Super Mario lore. Questions like "Is Mario and Luigi's last name really Mario?" (the answer's no) and "Does Mario dye his hair brown?" (the answer is again...no). But one Q&A got my attention; Game Informer asked "In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Koopalings were suppose to be Bowser's children. But there's also Bowser Jr. Are they all his kids, and are they all from different mothers? Is Bowser Jr. a Koopaling?" To which Shigeru Miyamoto responded,
"Our current story is that the seven Koopalings are not Bowser's children. Bower's only child is Bowser Jr. and we don't know who the the mother is."
Wait. WHAT?! Then who are the Koopalings?! Are they related to Bower in another way? Were they adopted? ARE THEY ACTUALLY CLONES OF BOWSER CREATED BY THE UNNATURAL COMBINATION OF SCIENCE AND DARK MAGIC?! What do you guys think the new story is on the Koopalings?

You know to this day I wonder how a female koopa the size of Bowser would look...but the idea it self seems horrifying. Either way this makes a lot of sense.

IIRC, they're his direct kids in the Mario cartoon(s) and that one old Nintendo Power comic (and probably several other adaptations), so at least there's those?

Well, remember... As mentioned to me recently on Tumblr, Super Mario Adventures (the aforementioned comic) was a localized work, so no one can really say if the original comic referred to them as "his kids." Heh heh.

Well Myamoto.. With that you just basically screwed yourself over. score one for the fans, as the koopalings being direct children from a previous marrage and whatnot have already become somewhat Mario lore and a wee late to correct that.
Though the Mario Bros.' last name does raise questions as we already have our own theories as to why peach keeps getting kidnapped by bowser by the week. If their last names aren't "Mario".. So I guess it's the name of their business?

Supposedly Mario and Luigi have no last names.
Notice the phrasing "current story", as in some rewrites probably went on between Super Mario World and now. Bowser will always be "King Dad" as far as I'm concerned.

Well, it's not like the first time Miyamoto did this. Nintendo IS known for inconsistent storytelling after all (LoZ and it's fuckin' screwy timeline).. Save for a few.
