It was a free handgun that was stronger than the pistol you first start out with, and even came in the same size, I'm usin' it until I get the size upgrade so that I can replace it with the Red whatever and get the stock at the same time. Plus, at the moment, it has the fastest reload time and second largest capacity, so I'll gladly use it for the time being

I used the Red9 from the moment I got it. It might take up a little more room than the Punisher when combined with the stock, but it's well worth it IMO.
Good luck with the rest of the game.

Thanks

I actually got to the point of getting the other 9mm and what really pissed me off though, I didn't sell the Punisher until the fight with Chief man, and essentially wasted the money that I could've used to pay for at least half the gun I just got. Oh well, I got the 'upgraded' versions of the weapons now, and now I'm questioning if the magnum is worth it.

The Broken Butterfly?

If wait a while and are willing to do a little back-tracking, you can get one for free.

I'd pick up the sniper rifle if I were you.

I'm actually looking at a guide and it's saying to use the basic set up that I entered the boss fight in since it ends up being stronger. However, I also use Rocket Launchers just to be a cheap bastard to the bosses, so after every boss fight, I have to spend 30k to get another one, and that hinders my upgrading prowess, so I'm kind of at a cross. I COULD reload my old save, and only bother with this last Rocket Launcher (after all, the boss I fought ended up using a rather boring pattern, in which I popped about 2-4 shots into him, ran to the other side, shot him again, ran to the other side, reloaded, ran to the other side, and the repeated the process over), and that 30k could go into powering up my weapons, and then use keep powering them up, or I could continue on now with the upgraded stuff that end up being weaker than the originals.

Was that previous boss Mendez? Two or three incendiary grenades usually kills him whenever I play.

Basic guide to guns in RE4:

Red9 is the best handgun.
Striker is the best shotgun.
SAR is the best rifle.
Broken Butterfly is the best magnum.

Buy the Red9/Striker/SAR as soon as you're given the opportunity, and grab the free BB when you can. Don't bother buying/upgrading any guns other than those 4 except possibly the riot gun, 'cause it takes a fair while before you're allowed to buy the striker, and you might want a decent shotgun in that time.

You'll probably want to try out some of the other guns on subsequent playthoughs, but for your first time, just stick with those four, and you shouldn't go wrong.

Red9 is the best handgun.

There has always been a big debate whether the Red9 is the best, or Blacktail.  Red9 is the most powerfull but Blacktail is fastest, so it comes down to preference.  To me though, speed is better then power nya ^^

I've always preferred the Blacktail, myself. A shot to the leg, then a few into the head was usually enough to decimate anything.

Who cares about speed? You shouldn't ever be spamming in RE4 enough that the firing rates even become an issue. The real advantage of the blacktail is that it takes up much less room, and I figure a first time player probably won't be able to build up a big enough stock of ammo/healing items that they'll need the space.

I never have enough room for grenades. I have a flash that I saved for him since I found out he'll fall no matter where he is. I still have the Rocket Launcher I bought before that I plan on using him, and as far as strategy goes, I got it pinned down easily.

I've been in a bit of a debate. As far as Rifles go, the SAR is better, but I don't use it that much to really warrant it, since it takes up more space than the regular rifle (it just happens to fit in the box better than the bolt action due to most of the objects being 1x2 or 2x1 in dimension, leaving me more horizontal space than the bolt action), so I may end up just keeping the regular one due to the fact that there's no real reason for me to warrant using the SAR since the money used to buy it could go into powering it up (plus, in certain cases, it may help when reloading a bullet because I get an instant front view of Leon after every shot, which can be very helpful when trying to snipe enemies from afar and someone comes up close to me, I can switch weapons and shoot them in front). For shotguns, the basic shotgun is supposedly better between it and the Riot Gun since the extra costs for the Riot Gun don't warrant it being much better cost-wise. For Handguns, I'll probably stick with the Red9. It's cheaper than the Blacktail and stronger in the end, and I already have the TMP for speedy fire.

I'm keepin' it. It's saved my life at least three times in some pretty dire situations. I'd upgrade it's power, but I don't have the cash (I just upgraded it once so that every two shots equaled one handgun shot), but it's something that I rely on when the [parasitic bomb] hits the fan.

Like I said, it saved me quite a bit, so I'm keeping it.

EDIT: Turns out I had a save from about an hour ago that has the Punisher and everything, and it's before the boss fight. I might take everyone's advice and just sell the TMP and everything related to it, as well as the Punisher, and just upgrade the Red9. Gives me a chance to restock on my healing items and go through the fight without having to heal.
